Kert, Larry (1930-1991) Larry Kert and Carol Lawrence Performing on by Craig Kaczorowski the Ed Sullivan Show in 1958
Kert, Larry (1930-1991) Larry Kert and Carol Lawrence performing on by Craig Kaczorowski the Ed Sullivan Show in 1958. Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Film still from a YouTube video. Entry Copyright © 2010 glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com The gay actor and singer Larry Kert originated the lead romantic role of Tony in the landmark 1957 Broadway musical West Side Story. With his expressive, vibrant tenor, he introduced some of the most memorable songs in the Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim score, including "Maria," "Tonight," and "Something's Coming." In 1970, Kert triumphed again on Broadway in another Sondheim musical, Company, as Robert, a New York bachelor observing the strains and tensions in the marriages of his best friends, as well as struggling to commit emotionally to each of his three girlfriends. Other Broadway shows involving Kert were unfortunately short-lived, and his later career was devoted mainly to cabaret, television, and regional theater. He was born Frederick Lawrence Kert in Los Angeles, California on December 5, 1930 into a comfortably middle-class family. His father was a jeweler and his mother an actress. He had a brother, Morton, and two sisters, Evelyn and the singer later known as Anita Ellis. He initially attended Hollywood High School but transferred to the Hollywood Professional School in Los Angeles. While still in school, Kert performed as an extra and stunt double in several movies, including Lassie Come Home (1943), where he was a stand-in for the film's star Roddy McDowell. After graduation, Kert took some classes at Los Angeles City College but soon dropped out and moved to New York City where he studied with the celebrated acting teacher Sanford Meisner. -

The Walt Disney Company and Pixar Inc.: to Acquire Or Not to Acquire?
9-709-462 REV: JANUARY 15, 201 0 J U A N A L C Á CER DAVID COLLIS M A R Y F U R E Y The Walt Disney Company and Pixar Inc.: To Acquire or Not to Acquire? In November 2005, Robert Iger, the newly appointed CEO of the Walt Disney Company, eagerly awaited the box office results of Chicken Little, the company’s second computer-generated (CG) feature film. He knew that, for Disney as a whole to be successful, he had to get the animation business right, particularly the new CG technology that was rapidly supplanting hand-drawn animation.1 Yet the company had been reliant on a contract with animation studio Pixar, which had produced hits such as Toy Story and Finding Nemo, for most of its recent animated film revenue. And the co-production agreement, brokered during the tenure of his predecessor, Michael Eisner, was set to expire in 2006 after the release of Cars, the fifth movie in the five-picture deal. Unfortunately, contract renewal negotiations between Steve Jobs, CEO of Pixar, and Eisner had broken down in 2004 amid reports of personal conflict. When he assumed his new role, Iger reopened the lines of communication between the companies. In fact, he had just struck a deal with Jobs to sell Disney- owned, ABC-produced television shows—such as “Desperate Housewives”—through Apple’s iTunes Music Store.2 Iger knew that a deal with Pixar was possible; it was just a question of what that deal would look like. Did it make the most sense for Disney to simply buy Pixar? Walt Disney Feature Animation Walt Disney Feature Animation began with the production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1934. -

Birds of Feather”? Inter-American Relations in Walt Disney's Saludos Amigos and the Three Caballeros
“Birds of Feather”? ─ Inter-American Relations in Walt Disney’s Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros” Pia Wiegmink Pia Wiegmink is assistant professor (wiss. Mitarbeiterin) at the Obama Institute for Transnational American Studies at the Johannes Gutenberg- University Mainz, Germany. In 2017, she has been visiting professor at York University, Toronto. She received her doctorate from the University of Siegen (2010), Germany, and is author of two monographs, Theatralität und Öffentlicher Raum [Theatricality and Public Space], Tectum 2005, and Protest EnACTed, Winter 2011. The special issue of Atlantic Studies on German Entanglements in Transatlantic Slavery, which she co-edited with Heike Raphael-Hernandez, was published in September 2017. Together with Birgit Bauridl (University of Regensburg), she heads an international research network on “Cultural Performance in Transnational American Studies” (2015-2018), which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). In this guest lecture Pia Wiegmink will look at two movies by one of the most prominent cultural ambassadors of Roosevelt’s Good Neighbor Policy: Walt Disney. Commissioned by the federal agency, Saludos Amigos (1943) and its sequel The Three Caballeros (1945) present their audience travelogues from south of the U.S. border. Part travel documentary, part animated cartoon, Disney’s propaganda films seem to defy negative representations of Latin America in Hollywood films: both films stage Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico as beautiful, urban, and appealing tourist destinations. In both films, Donald Duck is presented as the U.S. American tourist and the audience engages in the cultures south of the Rio Grande primarily via Donald’s interactions with Latin American culture, people, and birds.
