Getting acquainted with the myths What "getting acquainted" may mean We'll first try to clarify the meaning that the expression "getting acquainted" may have in this context: In a practical sense, I mean by "acquaintance" a general knowledge of the tales of mythology, including how they relate to each other. This concept includes neither analysis nor interpretation of the myths nor plunging too deep into one tale or another. In another sense, the expression "getting acquainted" has further implications that deserve elucidation: First of all, let us remember that we naturally investigate what we ignore, and not what we already know; accordingly, we set out to study the myths not because we feel we know them but because we feel we know nothing or very little about them. I mention this obvious circumstance because I believe that we should bear in mind that, in this respect, we are not in the same position as our remote ancestors, who may be assumed to have made their acquaintance with the myths more or less in the same way one learns one's mother tongue, and consequently did not have to study them in any way. -

ORACLES AND GREEK MENTALITIES: THE MANTIC CONFIRMATION OF MANTIC REVELATIONS Pierre Bonnechere The average Greek had a sense of divine intervention in human affairs.1 Day-to-day worries were one thing; faced with anything else, he soon found himself lost in a forest of symbols, whose meaning he had to decode if he were to hope to act rationally. A sign is ambiguous by defini- tion, however, and always hazardous to interpret; his best strategy would be to follow the greatest concentration of symbols and potentially telling mantic clues. And if ever these signs did not accumulate naturally, there were always means of soliciting them. Hence the universal preference for composite mantic enquiries: among the Azanda in s Sudan, each oracle obtained ‘by poison’ demanded a counter-test to be credible.2 The Hittites, likewise, could verify ominous dreams with such deductive orac- ular procedures as ornithomancy and hepatoscopy.3 For the Greek world, the example of Croesus would immediately spring to mind. They may be useful for anybody interested in Thales. They are not an essay, though they may lead to one. I focus mainly on the ancient sources that we have, and on the mathematics of Thales. I began this work in preparation to give one of several - minute talks at the Thales Meeting (Thales Buluşması) at the ruins of Miletus, now Milet, September , . The talks were in Turkish; the audience were from the general popu- lation. I chose for my title “Thales as the originator of the concept of proof” (Kanıt kavramının öncüsü olarak Thales). An English draft is in an appendix. The Thales Meeting was arranged by the Tourism Research Society (Turizm Araştırmaları Derneği, TURAD) and the office of the mayor of Didim. Part of Aydın province, the district of Didim encompasses the ancient cities of Priene and Miletus, along with the temple of Didyma. The temple was linked to Miletus, and Herodotus refers to it under the name of the family of priests, the Branchidae. I first visited Priene, Didyma, and Miletus in , when teaching at the Nesin Mathematics Village in Şirince, Selçuk, İzmir. The district of Selçuk contains also the ruins of Eph- esus, home town of Heraclitus. In , I drafted my Miletus talk in the Math Village. Since then, I have edited and added to these notes. -
The Shield As Pedagogical Tool in Aeschylus' Seven Against Thebes

PICHUGINA The article analyzes the descriptions of warriors in Aeschylus’s tragedy Seven against Thebes that are given in the “shield scene” and determines the pedagogical dimension of this tragedy. Aeschylus pays special attention to the decoration of the shields of the com- manders who attacked Thebes, relying on two different ways of dec- orating the shields that Homer describes in The Iliad. According to George Henry Chase’s terminology, in Homer, Achilles’ shield can be called “a decorative” shield, and Agamemnon’s shield is referred to as “a terrible” shield. Aeschylus turns the description of the shield decoration of the commanders attacking Thebes into a core element of the plot in Seven against Thebes, maximizing the connection be- tween the image on the shield and the shield-bearer. He created an elaborate system of “terrible” and “decorative” shields (Aesch. Sept. 375-676), as well as of the shields that cannot be categorized as “ter- rible” and “decorative” (Aesch. Sept. 19; 43; 91; 100; 160). The analysis of this system made it possible to put forward and prove three hypothetical assumptions: 1) In Aeschylus, Eteocles demands from the Thebans to win or die, focusing on the fact that the city cre- ated a special educational space for them and raised them as shield- bearers. His patriotic speeches and, later, his judgments expressed in the “shield scene” demonstrate a desire to justify and then test the educational concept “ἢ τὰν ἢ ἐπὶ τᾶς” (“either with it, or upon it”) (Plut. -

To give complete and accurate account of events in the Levant during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries B. C. is one of the most diffi- cult tasks presented by ancient history. It is also one of the most fasci- nating; for it must include not only a summary of what is known of the peoples of Asia Minor, Syria and Egypt, but also a survey of the My- cenean Age, and the Late Minoan "Sea-Raiders". It is moreover the historical background of the Trojan War. It was a time of great unrest, of fierce invasions and national migrations, whose effects lasted long. At the turn of the Century, in 1200 B. C. these are the main lines of the picture. From the Adriatic Sea to the Persian Gulf a large pro- portion of cities and tribes were independent of any great overlord. Knossos had been OTerthrown for some two centuries and although partly reinhabited it no longer ruled the waves, and the Mediterranean was swept by the Late Minoan sea-rovers. Egypt was powerless abroad and decadent at home. Babylon was just driving out the Kassites who had ruled for some centuries, and as yet the new native dynasty had little influence outside^). Assyria, whose power had greatly declined since the death of Tukulti-Ninib some forty years earlier, was beginning to reassert herseif but was still fully occupied in guarding her own frontiers. The empire of the Hittites was being finally overthrown by a fierce invasion of the Muski Phrygians who had crossed from Europe and were devastating Asia Minor. -

The deities are known for their simplicity. The matter of human wisdom, however, could fill all archives on earth without ever exhausting itself. Humanity is notorious for its complexity. And men proudly say "Good things are difficult." But is wisdom a labyrinth, or "thinking makes it so"? And when did the saga of human wisdom begin and with whom? Gutzwiller, Ph.D. Abstract This dissertation examines the role of elegy in the Thebaid by Statius, from allusion at the level of words or phrases to broad thematic resonance. It argues that Statius attributes elegiac language and themes to characters throughout the epic, especially women. Statius thus activates certain women in the epic as disruptors, emphasizing the ideological conflict between the genres of Latin love elegy and epic poetry. While previous scholarship has emphasized the importance of Statius’ epic predecessors, or the prominence of tragic allusion in the plot, my dissertation centers the role of elegy in this epic. First, I argue that Statius relies on allusion to the genre of elegy to signal the true divine agent of the civil war at Thebes: Vulcan. Vulcan’s erotic jealousy over Venus’ affair with Mars leads him to create the Necklace of Harmonia. Imbued with elegiac resonance, the necklace comes to Argia with corrupted elegiac imagery. Statius characterizes Argia within the dynamic of the elegiac relicta puella and uses this framework to explain Argia’s gift of the necklace to Eriphyle and her advocacy for Argos’ involvement in the war. By observing the full weight of the elegiac imagery in these scenes, I show that Argia mistakenly causes the death of Polynices and the devastation at Thebes as the result of Vulcan’s elegiac curse. -

Herodotus and the Urns of Zeus : A Homeric Allusion in the Histories Ancient and modern readers alike have noted the affinity between Homer and Herodotus, fountainheads of their respective genres. Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Longinus, and the Halicarnassus inscription (editio princeps by Isager 1999) dub Herodotus a "prose Homer." The connection between the two authors has engaged a host of modern scholars as well, including Immerwahr 1966, Lang 1984, Nagy 1987, Murray 1988, Fehling 1989, Ostwald 1991, Boedeker 2002. This paper contributes to the discussion by unveiling a previously unnoticed Homeric allusion in Herodotus' account of the Battle of Thermopylae. The disparity between powerful gods and vulnerable humans is emphasized throughout the Histories. The theme usually is invoked as a warning to heedless despots, whose good fortune merely exposes them to more devastating collapses. While the programmatic stories of Croesus and Polycrates have garnered more attention (e.g. Stahl 1975, Lateiner 1989, Erbse 1992, Moles 1996, van der Veen 1996, and Fisher 2002), the theme is equally significant in the Thermopylae narrative. It emerges when Leonidas’ men summon aid from their Locrian and Phocian allies. Along with reassuring details about military preparations, their message contains philosophical encouragement for the struggle ahead: though he may seem invincible, Xerxes remains human, and no human is exempt from adversity (7.203.2). This notion of human vulnerability pervades Greek literature, but Herodotus here alludes to perhaps the earliest, most cogent expression of the theme: Iliad 24 and Achilles’ description of Zeus' urns, from which the god concocts mixed fortunes for all people (24.525-30). -

In this translation, possessives of names ending in -s are usually indicated in the common way (that is, by adding -’s (e.g. Zeus and Zeus’s). This convention adds a syllable to the spoken word (the sound -iz). Sometimes, for metrical reasons, this English text indicates such possession in an alternate manner, with a simple apostrophe. This form of the possessive does not add an extra syllable to the spoken name (e.g., Hermes and Hermes’ are both two-syllable words). BACKGROUND NOTE Aeschylus (c.525 BC to c.456 BC) was one of the three great Greek tragic dramatists whose works have survived. Of his many plays, seven still remain.
