Page 2 of 4 I have no doubts about the authenticity of the autograph. I've been collecting Doctor Who autographs for many years, and either buy them from reliable sources or obtain them directly from the actors. If at any time you aren't convinced this one is genuine, you can return the display and receive a refund. As you can see below, the signature is a lovely example, signed on white card: The signature comes from the inside page of an autograph/photo album, which also included such Dr Who stars as Jacqueline Hill, Carole Ann Ford and Michael Craze. The page was signed by the actress at a rare convention appearance in the mid-80s, making this a very rare and much sought-after autograph. Signed clearly in bold black ink. The dedication couldn't be matted out, so reads To Michael from Adrienne Hill . A copy of a letter detailing the provenance of all three autographs can be enclosed with the item, on request. Check my other auctions for more rare signed displays! ADRIENNE HILL (died 1997) Adrienne Hill was born in Plymouth, England. After completing her training at the Bristol Old Vic, stated with the old Vic Company in London. She then went on to spend eight years in varied repertory theater roles. Having been spotted by Doctor Who production assistant Viktors Ritelis while understudying for Maggie Smith in a play called Mary, Mary , she was invited to audition for the role of Princess Joanna in The Crusade . Although she did not win that part, director Douglas Camfield remembered her and cast her as Katarina, who debuted in the The Myth Makers in 1965. After appearing in Doctor Who she went on to have successful roles, especially on the radio, and landed a regular role in the BBC Radio's Waggoner's Walk . She then moved abroad with her husband (Alan Rakof) when his work took him first to Holland and later to the USA. In the late seventies, after her marriage broke up, she returned to England and studied for a degree. During the eighties she launched a new career as a drama teacher, while continuing to do occasional acting work. Sadly Adrienne Hill died from cancer on 6th October 1997. Female Companions and Gender in Doctor Who Lorna Jowett Abstract: Science fiction has the potential to offer something new in terms of gender representation. This doesn’t mean it always delivers on this potential. Amid the hype surrounding the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, the longest running science fiction series on television, a slightly critical edge is discernable in the media coverage concerning the casting of the twelfth Doctor and issues of representation in the series. This paper examines Doctor Who in the broader context of TV drama and changes to the TV industry, analysing the series’ gender representation, especially in the 2005 reboot, and focusing largely on the female ‘companions’. Keywords: gender representation, television, feminism, BBC. When I put together an earlier version of this paper two years ago, I discovered a surprising gap in the academic study of Doctor Who around gender. Gender in science fiction has often been studied, after all, and Star Trek, another science fiction television series starting in the 1960s (original run 1966-69) and continued via spin-offs and reboots, has long been analysed in terms of gender. So why not Doctor Who? Admittedly, Doctor Who’s creators have no clear philosophy about trying to represent a more equal society, as with the utopian Trek. The lack of scholarship on gender in Doctor Who may also be part of a lack of scholarship generally on the series—academic study of it is just gaining momentum, and only started to accumulate seriously in the last five years.

Satisfying the desire for more Daleks came a range of toys and the world of tie in merchandising firmly took hold, with an increasing range of products linked to films and tv. For me it was James Bond, Batman, Dr Who Jacqueline Hill’s close encounter and the Gerry Anderson series such as Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet. It was pretty much the same for Bordesley Green born Steve Home is where the art is Woodhouse too. He has spent many years combining his interests and imagination culminating in his Art Toy Guys project with Trevor Boddington. I caught up with the pair at their Custard Factory workshop in Digbeth. It all began in 1996 when Steve’s growing collection of toys and annuals, unexpectedly developed a practical side when he started attending Bordesley Green Day Centre – off Broadway Avenue and Broadway Close (and since closed down). The Centre was intended to offer support and care for Steve as he uses a wheelchair and has cerebral palsy and epilepsy, but they were limited in what they were able to offer him.
