Editorial & Club News RWBTFC Kit Sponsors

Today’s Visitors Player Sponsor Welcome to the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground for our second South West Regional Women’s League Premier Division fixture of the season against league leaders Callington Abi Footner Sparkles Window Cleaning (Melksham) Town. A special warm welcome to the players, officials and spectators from Callington who Holly Baker have made the long 160 mile journey to the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground today from Cornwall. We hope you enjoy your short stay with us this afternoon and we wish you a safe Grace Eagles Midwinter Web Design journey home. Ellie Hayward William (Bill) Gulliver Callington have made a brilliant start to their league season winning all three of their opening league games and, like ourselves, have yet to concede a goal in any of their Hannah Gulliver Steve Green competitive games so far this season. Callington did not enter the FA Cup so all of their three wins to date have come in the league and they currently head the table by six points from Laura Jefferies Arctic Services (01793) 848502 ourselves and four other sides who have also won one game. Last season Callington finished in third place in the table and have strengthened over the summer with a couple of new Alice Farnell EMS Physio signings from Torquay United Ladies, including the prolific Gabi Alphous who has already Jessica Dent Keith and Sally House scored four times in those opening three league fixtures. The defence will certainly have their clean sheet record put to the test this afternoon and today should be a good test as to Rosie Kirk M & R Painting & Decorating how we are going to do this season, our first ever at this level of women’s football. Madeline Elliott Sarsen Kennel & Cattery F.A. Cup Success and Draw For Next Round Lauren Kayll Bryan Wood Well done to all involved in the Ladies side with last week’s emphatic FA Cup win over Torquay United which saw us through to the Second Qualifying Round where we will meet Mollie Smith Portishead Ladies, the game being scheduled for Sunday 6th October at Portishead. This FA Cup game now replaces the league fixture which would have been against the same Lara Wilson opponents at the same venue. Of the teams that Royal Wootton Bassett Town could have drawn, to have someone from your own division is not a bad outcome. In my view Whilst it Beth Kelloway Future of Football would have been nice to have had Swindon Town, Southampton or Cheltenham Town, Lisa Coe Richard Paish secure a win against Portishead and we might get to play one of these Ladies sides from the bigger clubs in the next round. The full Second Qualifying Round draw is included in today’s Amber Egerton Ridgeway Leisure Centre programme, along with the list of 24 sides that are exempt until the Second Round Proper and the 23 sides who are exempt to the Fourth Round Proper. In putting this together I was Aly Lyons G&D Vehicle Services shocked to see that the top sides are fully exempt until the round of 32 teams meaning that just 9 sides can make it through to play against one of the top sides from those teams who Hayley Huckin Mark Smedley are playing in the Second Qualifying Round and the 24 who join at the Second round stage. Sophie Smith The odds of reaching the Fourth Round proper are certainly stacked against clubs at our level and in the interests of further developing interest in the women’s game I would Lauren Usher suggest that the FA need to bring these teams in a round earlier. Just a thought. Jonny House Enjoy today’s game and it will certainly be interesting to see how the two strong defences cope today against the two strong forward lines. Should be a cracker! Footner brings a wealth of experience and is a as hard, if not harder each week in training. As mentioned, last week saw the club progress presence both on and off the pitch. From her position in goal, she through more FA Cup rounds that ever before and did so in style. Bassett dominated the gives guidance from the back and commands her box excellently. ball from start to finish and really dictated the game throughout. Despite some Nickname Abz unconvincing finishing, Bassett still managed to get themselves on the scoresheet multiple times and it was great to see three players score braces. The fourth clean sheet from four Occupation Accounts Technician games was a massive bonus and credit goes to goalkeepers Alice and Abi, who returned after a couple of weeks out with injury, as well as the approach of all the players in front of Position Goalkeeper them to continually stick to our principles and protect the goal at all costs. Our defensive line showed great composure from start to finish, looking assured both on and off the ball. Number of Seasons at Club Now in second season This gave the forward players a great platform from which to build. Each part of the team is Former Clubs FC Chippenham, Melksham Town starting to come together and the potential of the group is starting to appear for all to see. It has not been possible to trace league tables for the first two seasons but during that period they won the Cornwall County FA Cup for the first time and also the Bristol Soccerworld Cup. Season 2014-15 saw them finish in 3rd place in the Western Division 1 and the following season they went one better finishing as runners-up, a feat they repeated in 2016-17 when they also won the County Cup for a second time. Season 2017-18 was to be a memorable one as they won the Division 1 title but also once again won the Cornwall County Cup as they achieved the “double”. The title gave them promotion to the Premier Division and Callington Town are now the highest ranked women's team in Cornwall. That first season saw them finish in third place, a great achievement for the first season at the higher level. Known for their excellent team spirit, the ladies' usually maintain a large squad of players and as noted above, are running a second side this coming season who play in the Cornwall Women’s League where the first team started. 14 7

Bassett domin-eight Gulls in Cup triumph Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies 8 Torquay United Ladies 0 Sunday 22nd September 2019

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies' fine start to the season continued as they stuck eight goals without reply past Torquay United to march into the Women's FA Cup second qualifying round. Madeline Elliott, Hannah Gulliver and Hayley Huckin all notched twice, while the team's stingy defence recorded a fourth consecutive clean sheet.

Bassett set out their attacking stall from the off and could have been a goal ahead after just five minutes but Lauren Kayll applied too much power to her shot when picked out unmarked by a Huckin cross. Minutes later Huckin was denied by the Torquay 'keeper Leanne Robbins after a lucky bounce had fallen Gulliver's way on the wing. The inevitable opener arrived on 17 minutes as Huckin timed her run perfectly to beat the offside trap and lifted a lob from 25 yards over the advancing Robbins. Bassett's lead was quickly doubled when Elliott beat her marker and lifted a cool effort over the 'keeper and in off the post. Huckin then twice shot straight at Robbins as the visitors struggled mightily to cope with the pressure they were under. Another quick-fire two-goal salvo ultimately saw Bassett 4-0 up after 35 minutes. An unmarked Huckin beat her defender and shot a powerful drive through the 'keeper's hands before Lisa Coe swept home from a corner after Huckin had seen an effort blocked and turned around the post.

Bassett could have been forgiven for taking their foot off the gas given the position they were in at the break. But they did not relent. Elliott struck just over the bar before Kayll fired straight at the busy Robbins. A fine passing move that began in defence was then rounded off by Elliott, slotting in from Huckin's square pass in the 55th minute. After Huckin hit the bar, the follow up from Elliott forcing a great save, Grace Eagles was on hand to make it six. Kayll looked to have sent a one-on-one effort narrowly wide, but Eagles had gambled and was able to divert the ball home at the last moment. Torquay did manage to hit the post with quarter of an hour to go, and it was somewhat fortunate that Charlotte Dymond's angled effort didn't go in with the rebound falling into the grateful arms of Bassett 'keeper Abi Footner. But the majority of the action continued at the other end. And Gulliver netted twice late on. Her first came as she raced onto a ball over the top and hit a shot that proved too powerful for Robbins to keep out. Gulliver then latched onto a Kayll pass, rounded the 'keeper and slotted home.

Bassett will now take part in the competition's second qualifying round for only the second ever time - and on their current form it would be unwise to bet against them advancing even further.
