As the article on page 17 shows, St Dennis aren’t having the sort of season they might have hoped for. They’re eight places below us in the league table, but on the other hand we are having to come to terms with various changes, so the match might be closer than the form-book sug- gests. All the very best wishes to our new player-manager Steve Parker-Billinge, who has stepped up to the plate and got us off to an important first win last Monday . On page 5 you’ll see the full club statement which we published this week, explaining the recent management changes. I’m sure you’ll all join me in wishing Wayne Quinn well in the future. His record speaks for itself, a superb three and a half years that will live long in the memory, and a great deal of hard work as well. One day in mid October I saw a few Swallows flying over the village on their way to Africa. The following day I noticed a Black Redstart, a winter visitor to our coast. I now look forward to the possibility of a Blackcap or a tiny Firecrest in the garden or wintering thrushes in hedgerows. The Blackcaps that stay for winter are not the same birds that breed in our woodlands. The latter have moved south whereas the newcomers are a separate population that will have bred further east on the continent. A series of mild winters has enabled the Blackcaps to survive here instead of flying south and they have passed on the habit to later generations. They will stay until March when they begin to sing and become aggressive towards other birds at feeders. This takes me on to a sad situation that I noticed in September. Trichomonosis is a deadly disease that affects the digestive system of some birds and I saw the symptoms among Goldfinches. They become lethargic, cannot feed successfully and soon starve.

Situated on the River Pol, four miles west of the major resort of Looe and 25 miles west of the major city and port of Plymouth, it has a picturesque fishing harbour lined with tightly packed houses which make it a popular tourist location in the summer months. The village retains almost all of its 17th Century architectural charm and has been a working fishing port since the 13th Century. This peaceful fishing cove was once a thriving centre for the area's smuggling. Today, in cellars where furtive smugglers once dodged the Customs Officer’s muskets, you can see displays of local crafts and fishermen's smocks, or dine in style at one of Polperro's excellent restaurants. Fishing trips or pleasure cruises can be arranged from the quayside, or one can take the cliff path to explore the secluded smuggling coves of Talland and Lantivet Bay. With its protected inner harbour full of colourful boats packed tightly into a steep valley on either side of the River Pol, the quaint colour-washed cottages and twisting streets, Polperro offers surprises at every turn: the Saxon and Roman bridges, the famous House on Props, The Old Watch House, the fish quay, and the 16th Century house where Dr.

ECHINUSESCULENTUS,the larger common sea-urchin, occurs in the British Isles between tide-marks on rocky shores at about low-water spring- tide level in the localities given in Table I, page 292. It is, however, absent from apparently suitable foreshores in-the Plymouth district, for reasons which are discussed in the present paper. Chadwick (1) states - that" In Port Erin Bay it may be collected by hand on the beach, and on the ruined breakwater at low water of spring tides." Elmhirst (2) records that" In this district (Millport) E. esculentus occurs abundantly between tide-marks in spring and early summer on rocky coasts; a few may be found at almost any other season. About February or early March a shoreward migration seems to set in, so that in suitable weather conditions some hundreds may be collected at springs between April and June. Then their abundance decreases until about Novem- ber, from when until January it is at a minimum." Storrow (3) reports that these" sea-urchins were plentiful on the local rocks (at Cullercoats, Northumberland) during July of last year (1920)," and it is known that E.

  • In Search of the Corn Wall
In Search of the Corn Wall Adventures in the West Country April 24th - May 4th 2020 Back in the sixties, every July, my mum and dad would make up two beds on the back seat of their Ford Zephyr for my sister and me to ‘sleep’ on, and, in the dead of night, we would drive across London and head off down through Hampshire, Wiltshire and Devon to glorious Cornwall for our annual summer holiday. The excitement was unbearable! The idea was that Michèle and I would sleep soundly for at least seven hours, by which time we would be comfortably near our destination, the little cove of Millendreath, and, although tired, my parents would not have had to endure the daytime traffic and the interminable calls of, “Are we there yet?” from the back seat. Well, as always, the parental plans were only half successful! We knew that we were supposed to be asleep but with our hearts pounding and our imagi- nations racing with thoughts of golden beaches to play on, endless scary two foot waves to surf in, treacherous cliffs to climb, rock pools to go crabbing in and a constant supply of scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream, sleep was well nigh impossible! St. Michael’s Mount For me, part of the problem was my fascination with, and eagerness to see, the great ‘Corn Wall’ (in England corn is wheat) which we somehow had to get across in order to reach the cornucopia of pleasures that awaited us. In my small boy’s mind, the ‘Corn Wall’ had taken on mythical status......as long as the Great Wall and as much a barrier between the grim world and the world of fun as the Berlin Wall, both of which my dad had informed me of from his travels abroad.
