Welcome to you all and our visitors from St Dennis for a match that marks the mid-point in our league season.

As the article on page 17 shows, St Dennis aren’t having the sort of season they might have hoped for. They’re eight places below us in the league table, but on the other hand we are having to come to terms with various changes, so the match might be closer than the form-book sug- gests.

All the very best wishes to our new player-manager Steve Parker-Billinge, who has stepped up to the plate and got us off to an important first win last Monday . On page 5 you’ll see the full club statement which we published this week, explaining the recent management changes.

I’m sure you’ll all join me in wishing Wayne Quinn well in the future. His record speaks for itself, a superb three and a half years that will live long in the memory, and a great deal of hard work as well. Quinny still has a THIS SEASON’S WEST DIVISION CLUBS huge amount to contribute to football, in whatever capacity he chooses.

04 33 MOUSEHOLE AFC TEAM MANAGER: CLUB STATEMENT

Player-manager Wayne Quinn has stepped down as player-manager at Mousehole AFC. The former player – who featured between 1997 and 2004 in over 200 games for Sheffield United, Newcastle and West Ham as well as playing for ‘B’ and Under-21s and in the Europa League – took over at Mousehole in the summer of 2013 at a time when The Seagulls were accustomed to finishing in the lower reaches of the South West Peninsula Division 1 West table. Since then, together with assis- tant player-manager Mark Vercesi, he has guided The Seagulls to 2nd, 7th and 1st place in the League, while this season the team is well placed to finish in the top three, and is still in the three cup competitions.

Mousehole chairman Tim Richardson paid this tribute to the outgoing manager: “Quinny deserves the highest praise, respect and thanks for what he’s built and achieved over the last three years, culminating in last season’s historic and record-breaking League Championship and Cornwall Charity Cup wins. He’s got good players playing attractive football - players who are willing to play for no money whatsoever, because they want to improve themselves and play the game the right way. And also because they enjoy the club atmosphere and feel a sense of belonging as well! At the start, Wayne committed himself to three seasons and he’s already gone past that. At the age of 40 he’s still very competitive and one of the best centre- backs in the Division. Wayne has put his heart and soul into Mousehole AFC and will always be a club legend. He will be a hard act to follow, but we will do our best to make the most of his legacy. We wish him all the very best.”

Under the three completed seasons under Wayne Quinn’s leadership:  Mousehole finished in 2nd, 7th and 1st place in the league, with an overall win rate of 73%.  In his first season, The Seagulls broke - and still hold - the league record with 15 straight wins from the start of the season.  Last season, the double-winning team collected both the league championship trophy and the Cornwall Charity Cup, both for the first time in the club’s 93-year history. In doing so they broke various league records including, over the 32 league games played, the fewest defeats (1), the most goals scored (131), the fewest goals conceded (17), the most points gained (91), a 100% home record and finished 10 points above full-time Plymouth Argyle Reserves. They also beat Premier Division sides and Tavistock to reach the semi-final of the League Cup.

Mousehole’s new player-manager is 30-year old Steve Parker-Billinge, The Seagulls’ goalkeeper since August 2015. Midlands-born, he was on the books of Stoke City, Shrewsbury Town and Kidderminster Harriers, as well as other non-league sides in that area, and then, after moving to Cornwall, played for Illo- gan, Liskeard and Town, where he won West Division championship and Charity Cup double medals in their 2013/14 promotion season.

Chairman Tim Richardson said: “Steve has good communication skills, tactical knowledge and local con- tacts, as well as a deep fondness for the club, and although this is his first managerial appointment he knows the set-up and players, and the Committee had no hesitation in confirming his appointment. We expect Steve to ‘be his own man’ and gradually shape things on the field the way he thinks they should be. He will receive whatever support he needs.”

Speaking before the first match under his leadership on Monday, the new boss said: “I am honoured to be confirmed as the new Manager of the club. I have been here since the beginning of the double winning season and have never felt more at home. My job is to try to continue the success that Wayne achieved and help ensure Mousehole is a recognised and respected force in Cornish football. My first task is to inspire the players in the belief that there’s “life after Quinny” and to help them focus on what they do best. We’ve got a lot to play for in the second half of the season in both league and cup games, so there’s no time for looking back. It’s been an ‘interesting’ few days - I also got married last week!” 32 05 THE LANGUAGE OF FOOTBALL COMMENTATORS NEXT SATURDAY, 14TH JANUARY : CORNWALL SENIOR CUP THIRD ROUND

NEW PLAYER-MANAGER STEVE PARKER-BILLINGE: IN HIS OWN WORDS

My new role at the club has come a lot sooner than anticipated, after Wayne’s departure.

From a personal point of view, I am sorry to see him leave - what we achieved in the previous season was nothing short of spectacular.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Wayne for everything he has done, for me personally, for the club and for the success Mousehole achieved last year.

Football has been my life ever since I can remember and to be given the opportunity to manage at such a fantastic club is a real honour and not one that I will take lightly.

After getting married on Thursday and Quinny’s resignation coming on the Saturday, I had 48 hours to prepare for Holsworthy’s visit for the

League Cup match on Monday.

This wasn’t as bad as I first thought as we had a fairly full squad to choose from and a side that had all played together at some point. However, given that we could have quite easily been going in at half time 5-1 down, to get to the break 1-0 ahead was a relief. The second half seemed to fly by as every change I had planned to make seemed a little delayed.

Once we scored the second, I was a little more at ease, but all that really matters is that we were in the draw for the next round. To then draw Bodmin again was a little deflating and speaking with Darren Gilbert this week we both joked about it being a fix!

Moving on to this week and the visit of St Dennis, plans have been very different to last week. We go into the fixture with a number of Reserve team players, but still with a fairly strong squad.

Obviously, after Wayne’s departure, it is inevitable that there will be a bit of player movement, but that’s down to me to manage and bring a few new faces in too.

There will be a few changes to the way things are run, as I look to put my own stamp on things. One of my first priorities is to bring in somebody I can trust to not just be a number 2, but to work equally with me on moving the club forward. I have already been communicating with somebody about this, but will not divulge any names at this stage.

It’s certainly going to be a challenge for the remainder of the season, but one that I am looking forward to. And with the backing and support from the players, committee, and supporters, anything is possible. 30 07

Midweek defeat by Spurs foiled Chelsea’s attempt to achieve a Premier League record 14 consecutive league victories. But in the SWPL, Mousehole hold the record for consecutive victories: 15 league games, achieved from the start of the 2013/14 season, Wayne Quinn’s first in charge. The run of victories started on 17th August with a home win over today’s visitors St Dennis, and ended on 11th January with defeat away at St Dennis! NOTES ABOUT ST DENNIS AFC

St Dennis joined the SWPL West Division as recently as 2011/12, having won the East Cornwall League Division 1 and Premier Division titles in successive years, with only six league defeats in two seasons. In their five completed SWPLD1W seasons since then they have finished 9th twice, 6th twice and 4th.

In their first season in the West Division, St Dennis ‘did the double’ over Mousehole, winning 4-2 away and 5-0 at home. In 2012/13, St Dennis went even better, winning 4-2 away and 4-0 at home in the league, and 7-1 at home in the Senior Cup. In 2013/14, Mousehole won 1-0 at home on the opening day of the season, but lost 4-1 at St Dennis. In 2014/15 Mousehole won 3-1 away and 2-1 at home, Bradley Wills scoring three and Wade Brown two of those five goals.

This season sees The Saints unexpectedly in their lowest position (12th), with a fairly flat profile of 6 wins, 5 draws, 6 defeats, 36 goals scored with 33 conceded. They have several games in hand over most of the teams around them in the table. Lee Rickard is again their leading scorer, with 10 so far. Their home attendances average 53. They are second-bottom of the SWP West Division disciplinary table with 3 red cards and 35 yellows.

Among their match-day squad is defender Matt Laithwaite, who joined Mousehole from St Dennis in the summer, making three starts and four substitute appearances, before re-joining the Boscawen Park side.

St Dennis’ league record this season has shown up-and-down results, their best spells being consecutive away wins at Penzance (9-3) and Liskeard Athletic (4-2) followed by a 0-0 home draw with Elburton Villa, but they then lost two on the trot at Porthleven (1-2) and Penryn Athletic (2-4). In their last three league matches they have lost 3-5 at Holsworthy and 0-2 at Sticker on Boxing Day in front of 237, and last week they drew 3-3 at home with Illogan RBL after being in a 3-1 winning position until very late in the game.

Mousehole had four wins out of four against St Dennis last season: 2-1 away in the Senior Cup after extra time, 2-1 away in the league with a last-minute winner, 5-0 in the league at home in April against a depleted side missing several first-team regulars on a ‘social weekend’, and less than three weeks later 5-0 in the floodlit Charity Cup Final at Bodmin Town.

The return league fixture is at Boscawen Park on Saturday 11th March at 3pm, with a chance to see the most recent ground upgrade funded by substantial grant-investment . 20 17
