Amen. 1Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, 2“Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him.” (Matthew 2:1-2, RSV) God bless those Wise Men! The old saying is true, “Wise men still seeking him!” So do wise women, girls, and boys. One plain and good thing we can say about those Wise Men of old is that they were energetic. No slug-a-bed for them. The star of the new king shines in the East, and those Wise Men are off to seek this newborn king. No delay. No putting off till tomorrow the good they can begin today. Arise, shine To put the journey of the Wise Men in perspective, let me begin with a line from this morning’s First Lesson, from Isaiah 60. It speaks of light and of arousing oneself because of that light. The verse starts off this way: Arise, shine; for your light has come… (Isaiah 60:1, RSV) This text puts me in mind of those happy days of old, when Carol and I were young parents, when we would wake the children for the new day.

    Friday, April 12, 2019 Hephzibah Isaiah 62-63 April 8 - 13, 2019 The nations will see your righteousness, and all kings your glory; you will be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will bestow. You will be a crown of splendor in the LORD’S hand, a royal diadem in the hand of your God. No longer will they call you Deserted, or name your land Desolate. But you will be called Hephzibah and your land Beulah; for the LORD will take delight in you, and your land will be married. Isaiah 62:2-4 These verses must be read in context. God will rejoice over His bride. The Church is the bride of Christ and there are promises contained for the Church, but this passage is speaking about the new name that will be given to Israel. Israel had acted as an unfaithful wife and so she was forsaken by God—but not divorced (50:1-3). God has purposes for the sake of Zion and for all the nations of the world. Jerusalem must receive her new name and become a crown of the glory of God. Then righteousness and peace will come to the earth. No longer will the names Desolate and Deserted apply. Rather Hephzibah and Beulah. The meaning of these names is very significant. “Beulah” means “married.” “Hephzibah” means “my delight is in her!” No longer desolate, the delight of the LORD will be in His people and His city. When a bride marries, she receives a new name. Israel is already married to Jehovah, but in the future, eternal reconciliation, she will receive this new eternal name.

    JETS 58/2 (2015) 283–97 THE “WEALTH OF THE NATIONS”: A STUDY IN THE INTERTEXTUALITY OF ISAIAH 60:5, 11 CHARLES E. CRUISE* The picture in Isaiah 60 of an eschatological journey of Gentile nations bear- ing material riches to Jerusalem presents certain exegetical and theological challeng- es. A cursory reading of the text might suggest that, in relation to the NT, Isaiah is foreshadowing the post-Pentecost ingathering of the Gentiles to the kingdom of God. The mood would seem to be a joyous one among the pacified rebels as they prepare to realize their equal citizenship with Jews in the glorious eternal city. A close study of the literary context and the intertextual links, however, reveals quite a different situation. There is much to suggest that, for the Gentiles marching to Je- rusalem, fear outweighs all other emotions, and that their journey is one of compul- sion, for they are not to arrive in Jerusalem as free citizens but as slaves. As a van- quished people, their wealth now rightfully belongs to another. Where do the defeated Gentiles of Isaiah 60 fit into the larger narrative of salvation history revealed in the biblical corpus? To what extent is Isaiah’s scene, with its unique language, picked up by the NT authors? And what, if any, theologi- cal tensions become apparent in approaching the NT, especially the eschatological passages of Revelation 20–22? A highly beneficial way of addressing these questions is through a canonical- linguistic study. As evident by its name, such an analysis involves an emphasis on language and takes place within the limits of the biblical canon.

Vast wealth from Midian, Ephah, Sheba, Kedar, Nebaioth will be brought to Jerusalem during the Millennium. • Isa. 60:7. The places mentioned were obscure tribes in the Arabian desert indicating that all people will come to Jerusalem because Jesus will be living there and they will be attracted to his light (presence).
