The More The Merrier | Definition of The More The Merrier by Merriam-Webster Build up your Halloween Watchlist with our list of the most popular horror The More the Merrier on Netflix in October. See the list. Title: The More the Merrier Believing it to be her patriotic duty, Connie The More the Merrier to sublet half of her apartment, fully expecting a suitable female tenent. What she gets instead is mischievous, middle-aged Benjamin Dingle. Dingle talks her into subletting to him and then promptly sublets half of his half to young, irreverent Joe Carter - creating a situation tailor-made for comedy The More the Merrier romance. Written by A. Easily the best film that I've ever seen from George Stevens and I really like several of his other films. Jean Arthur stars as a woman renting out half of her apartment because of a housing shortage in Washington D. Charles Coburn, who is in Washington to help solve the crisis, weasles his way into the apartment even though Arthur didn't want a male roommate. The morning after, Joel McCrea arrives with yesterday's newspaper, not knowing that the vacancy exists no more. No matter, though. Coburn rents half of his half of the apartment to McCrea, unbeknownst to Arthur. God knows this premise could have made one hell of a sitcom, but it also makes a damn funny movie. There isn't an unfunny scene in the entire film, and several scenes vie for the title of Best Romantic Comedy of all times with Preston Sturges' contemporaneous films. The three The More the Merrier are remarkable. They have great chemistry as a comic trio, and McCrea and Arthur throw sparks off the screen with their surprisingly erotic romance. I failed to mention that Arthur is engaged to The More the Merrier older man, adding to the dilemma. I love the way his mouth moves. Grady Sutton has a very funny cameo near the end of the film as a waiter. Stevens' direction is exceptional. It's shocking how believably he pulls off the scene in which McCrea and Arthur wander around the apartment without bumping into each other. This is reminiscent of a The More the Merrier scene from Buster Keaton's The Navigator, and it's even funnier. Or that The More the Merrier scene where McCrea gives a carrying case to Jean Arthur. Their acting is so subtly romantic in that scene. I love the way Stevens films it. Looking for some great streaming picks? • Tribute to George Stevens at Museum
The Museum of Modern Art lii RELSE: 1 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable; Modernart January 8 , 1970 TRIBUTE TO GEORGE STEVENS AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART A tribute to George Stevens, one of America's best-known film directors, will be given by the Department of Film of The Museum of Modern Art from January 8th to 27th. Cover ing a span of three decades, this retrospective will consist of eighteen of Stevens' films including not only such well-known pictures as "Shane" and "A Place in the Sun," but also "Alice Adams," "Gunga Din," and "Woman of the Year." At the same time the Museum will commemorate the director's work by publishing the first book-length study of his films: "George Stevens: An American Romantic," by Donald Richie. i^ In the introduction, Willard Van Dyke, Director of the Museum's Department of Film, describes Stevens as "a craftsman who became an artist, a romanticist who de veloped into a realist." His work reflects many of the salient social and philosophi cal attitudes of his times. As a result, audiences identify with the characters in Stevens' films and, in the opinion of Van Dyke, "whether or not he intended such a thing, Stevens has, in a very important way, become the spokesman for his country and his era," because he shared with his audiences so many of its assumptions. What are these assumptions? In his study of the director, Donald Richie refers to the traditional American values of the past to which George Stevens, born in Oak land, California in 1904, was heir.

  • 'Two Faces of Jean' Showcases Jean Arthur Classic Hollywood
'Two Faces of Jean' showcases Jean Arthur: Classic Hollywood - Los Angeles Times 9/28/12 10:18 AM ← Back to Original Article Classic Hollywood: 'Two Faces of Jean' showcases Jean Arthur Jean Arthur is seen in comedies ('The More the Merrier') and dramas ('Whirlpool') in the 'Two Faces of Jean' series at the Billy Wilder Theater. August 05, 2012 | By Susan King, Los Angeles Times No actress had a voice like Jean Arthur. It was an almost undescribable blend of a squeak and froggy croak. Arthur put that voice to great use in the comedies and dramas she made in the 1930s through the early '50s. She literally purrs when she is kissed by Joel McCrea in George Stevens' 1943 comedy "The More the Merrier," for which she earned her only lead actress Oscar nomination. But in Arthur's breakout film, Frank Capra's 1936 "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town," one can hear the pain and tension in her voice when she tries to persuade Gary Cooper's Mr. Deeds to defend himself at a sanity hearing. PHOTOS: Hollywood back lot "Her voice is amazing in that scene. You can sense the hysteria that she feels that this man will never stand up for himself," said Richard Jewell, film professor at USC's School of Cinematic Arts. "I think it is some of the best acting in 1930s Hollywood films." That acting talent is on full display in "The Two Faces of Jean," the UCLA Film & Television Archive retrospective opening Friday at the Billy Wilder Theater with two of her early films at Columbia — the 1934 drama "Whirlpool" and the 1935 John Ford-directed comedy "The Whole Town's Talking," withEdward G.

  • Comedy Films Are a Sub-Genre of Comedy Films As Well As of Romance Films
Romantic comedy film From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. (Redirected from Romantic comedy) Romantic comedy films are a sub-genre of comedy films as well as of romance films. The basic plot of a romantic comedy is that two people meet, banter with each other, but despite an attraction obvious to the audience do not become romantically involved because of some internal factor (on the surface, they do not like each other) or an external barrier (one is romantically involved with another person, for instance). At some point, after various comic scenes, they are parted for some reason. One partner or the other then realizes that they are perfect for each other, and (often after some spectacular effort, sometimes termed the Grand Gesture, and/or incredible coincidence) they meet again, they declare undying love for each other, and disappear off into the sunset together. COMEDY FILMS Screwball Comedy: Screwball comedies were launched in the mid-1930s, and established their place after the advent of film sound and the social disturbances of the Depression. This form of comedy provided by a new generation of writers and directors offered escapist entertainment for Depression-era audiences through much of the 30s and into the 40s - especially after the strict enforcement of the Hays Code took effect. Screwball comedies were characterized by social satire, comedic relief through zany, fast-paced and unusual events, sight gags, sarcasm, screwy plot twists or identity reversals, and precisely-timed, fast-paced verbal dueling and witty sarcastic dialogue - blending the wacky with the sophisticated. Screwball comedies often took an anarchic tone or irreverent view of domestic or romantic conflicts ('battles of the sexes'), and usually aimed their barbs at the leisure-upper class.

  • Memorializing Genocide I: Earlier Holocaust Documentaries
Reason Papers Vol. 38, no. 2 Memorializing Genocide I: Earlier Holocaust Documentaries Gary James Jason California State University, Fullerton 1. Introduction As I write this review essay, Holocaust Memorial Day (May 5, 2016) has just passed. At this time when anti-Semitism is evidently on the rise again in Europe,1 it seems appropriate to review some of the cinematic record we have of this murderous episode in the history of humankind. In this first of a two-part series, I review four of the most useful Holocaust documentaries, addressing a number of pertinent issues they raise. We are lucky that a number of excellent old documentaries showing the horrors of the Nazi crimes against humanity in general (and the Holocaust in particular) have now been made readily available.2 The ones that I will examine here include two early documentaries produced by the U.S. War Department contemporaneous with the liberation of the death camps, a classic French film from 1955, and a 1973-1974 British television documentary. I intend to explain which of these documentaries work well as effective film, and exactly why they do so. I will also explain why one was a relative failure, in that it was shown only briefly, and explore an ambiguity in the term ‘Holocaust’ that informs how these films document the mass murders by the Nazi Regime. 1 I sketched this rise in Gary James Jason, “Disquieting Developments,” Liberty, April 22, 2015, accessed online at: http://www.libertyunbound.com/node/1404. 2 They are available for purchase through specialty film outlets, as well as through Amazon.com.
