Such a unique approach has made NIMHANS a premier institute not just in the country but also in the world and its three pillars include service delivery, training and research. Although intended to be a tertiary care referral centre for mental, neurological and neurosurgical disorders, the reputation of its quality care attracts people from all parts of India and from the region. There is always a balanced focus on both curative as well as promotive aspects of mental and neurological health. E-mail : [email protected] Abstract : Nursing is an attribute expected of every living being and every living being is capable of providing care to another in need. Few occasions especially the sickness, unawareness or disability call for special skills of nursing to substitute or supplement to the acute or chronic need of a living being. These skills can be acquired only through special training through a well planned curriculum. Hence in modern medicine, a group of health care providers called nurses are trained to care for the sick and the needy. Nursing profession has been the attraction for many young adults, however, this attraction has become the passion for some, while for few others, it is still an occupation. The transformation into an effective nurse demands special psychomotor abilities. The transformation is easier and can happen at a faster pace if one possesses an aptitude towards nursing. This assumption led the researcher to develop a tool to identify such able candidates for the profession of nursing. This article explores researcher's two attempts in developing the tool, which were though not fruitful, they certainly have given an impression on the complexity of the measurement of the construct of nursing and caring. Usually terminally ill patients spend their end stages of life at home being cared for by their families, without formal home care services. The caregivers experience many barriers to manage the symptoms experienced by their beloved one who is suffering from cancers. Fear of addiction may be an important barrier to cancer pain management. Depression among caregivers is mainly due to the fear of unemployment during caregiving, being the spouse of a patient, burden of caregiving and disturbance of personal life. Family caregivers experience many difficulties and have increased responsibilities during and after the treatment for cancer. Caregiver’s sleep disturbances contribute to depression, anger and anxiety. Aim: Objective of the study was to identify the barriers to symptom management among caregivers of cancer patients. Methods & Materials: A descriptive study was conducted among 768 family caregivers of cancer patients selected by convenient sampling technique. Data were collected from caregivers those who were caring their beloved one at least two to three hours per day and who were above 20 years of age. Data were collected by structured interview with a barriers questionnaire and demographic proforma after obtaining the consent from the caregiver.

Govindaswamy Founder Director 1954 - 1961 he National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) is a multidisciplinary Institute for Tpatient care and academic pursuit in the field of mental health and neurosciences. NIMHANS is synonymous with providing high standards of clinical care, quality training and cutting-edge research in frontier areas of the brain and mind. The Institute, with its philosophical underpinning of an integrated and multidisciplinary approach and its cognizance of societal needs, has prioritised its objectives as providing comprehensive patient care, manpower development and research. At the institute, advances in genomics, computational neuroscience, mathematical modelling, neuroimaging, molecular biology and a host of new disciplines including public health are being translated to help society and also promote the growth of knowledge. Ever since its inception, a special feature of this Institute is combining research and training with promotive, preventive and curative aspects of clinical services in Mental Health and Neurosciences. This ethos continues to the present day. NIMHANS represents a unique model of a successful partnership between the Union and State Governments (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and the Government of Karnataka). The manpower development programmes at NIMHANS reflect the extent to which the Institute has succeeded in integrating and nurturing disciplines such as behavioural sciences, neurosciences, basic biological sciences and ancient health systems under one roof.

Design: Randomized controlled trial. Setting and Subject: Caregivers of children between 2 to 5 years of age residing in selected villages in Karnataka. Intervention: Intervention group was administered Home safety supervisory program (HSSP), whereas the control group received teaching on child care. Results: The intervention group had a significant reduction in the frequency of childhood injuries when compared with the control group [MD (95% CI) 8.96 vs 3.37], after the administration of Home safety supervisory program.

Caring is visible however it is difficult to capture the real caring in quantitative terms. Nursing is synonymous with caring and hence entrants to nursing programmes should possess a pre- requisite ability for caring. Physical fitness and 50% of marks in 12th grade scores (in science stream) has been the eligibility criteria for nursing however, the growing quality oriented health care market seeks competent nurses in caring. Thus there is a need to assess the aptitude towards nursing and caring, an attempt in this direction is briefed here.
