THE CONSERVATION ACTION PLAN FOR THE GANGES RIVER DOLPHIN 2010-2020 National Ganga River Basin Authority Ministry of Environment & Forests Government of India Prepared by R. K. Sinha, S. Behera and B. C. Choudhary 2 MINISTER’S FOREWORD I am pleased to introduce the Conservation Action Plan for the Ganges river dolphin (Platanista gangetica gangetica) in the Ganga river basin. The Gangetic Dolphin is one of the last three surviving river dolphin species and we have declared it India's National Aquatic Animal. Its conservation is crucial to the welfare of the Ganga river ecosystem. Just as the Tiger represents the health of the forest and the Snow Leopard represents the health of the mountainous regions, the presence of the Dolphin in a river system signals its good health and biodiversity. This Plan has several important features that will ensure the existence of healthy populations of the Gangetic dolphin in the Ganga river system. First, this action plan proposes a set of detailed surveys to assess the population of the dolphin and the threats it faces. Second, immediate actions for dolphin conservation, such as the creation of protected areas and the restoration of degraded ecosystems, are detailed. Third, community involvement and the mitigation of human-dolphin conflict are proposed as methods that will ensure the long-term survival of the dolphin in the rivers of India. This Action Plan will aid in their conservation and reduce the threats that the Ganges river dolphin faces today. Finally, I would like to thank Dr. R. K. Sinha , Dr. S. K. Behera and Dr. -

It differs from its sole congener, G. viridescens, in having a gently curved (vs. distinctly notched) anteroventral margin of the oper- cle, narrower head (17.2-20.8 % SL vs. 19.7-23.2; 58.2-64.8 % HL vs. 65.6-76.9) and larger eye (20.3-24.8 % HL vs. 16.2-20.5). Therefore, it was very important to undertake a detail study on the species from the conservation point of view in the entire river system within Assam, based on which site and factor specific conservation actions would be worthwhile. However, getting the sponsorship to conduct this task in a huge geographical area of about 56,000 sq. km. itself was a great problem. The support from the BP Conservation Programme (BPCP) and the Rufford Small Grant for Nature Conservation (RSG) made it possible for me. I am hereby expressing my sincere thanks to both of these Funding Agencies for their great support to save this endangered species. The species is diagnosed by the presence of red Birbhum, West Bengal, India barbels along with five saddles from head to tail, black blotches on caudal peduncle and lobes of caudal fin. Identification and Re-Evaluation of Freshwater Catfishes through DNA Barcoding Maloyjo J. Bhattacharjee, Boni A. Laskar, Bishal Dhar, Sankar K. Ghosh* Department of Biotechnology, Assam University, Assam, India Abstract Background: Catfishes are globally demanded as human food, angling sport and aquariums keeping thus are highly exploited all over the world. North-East India possess high abundance of catfishes and are equally exploited through decades. The strategies for conservation necessitate understanding the actual species composition, which is hampered due to sporadic descriptions of the species through traditional taxonomy. Therefore, actual catfish diversity in this region is important to be studied through the combined approach of morphological and molecular technique of DNA barcoding. Methodology/Principal Findings: Altogether 75 native catfish specimens were collected from across the North-East India and their morphological features were compared with the taxonomic keys. The detailed taxonomic study identified 25 species belonging to 17 genera and 9 families. The cytochrome oxidase c subunit-I gene fragment were then sequenced from the samples in accordance with the standard DNA barcoding protocols. The sequences were compared with public databases, viz., GenBank and BOLD. Sequences developed in the current study and from databases of the same and related taxa were analyzed to calculate the congeneric and conspecific genetic divergences using Kimura 2-parameter distance model, and a Neighbor Joining tree was created using software MEGA5.1. The DNA barcoding approach delineated 21 distinct species showing 4.33 folds of difference between the nearest congeners. Four species, viz., Amblyceps apangi, Glyptothorax telchitta, G. trilineatus and Erethistes pusillus, showed high conspecific divergence; hence their identification through molecular approach remained inconclusive. -

(Received 7 December 2004, Accepted 22 October 2005) Batasio tengana is redescribed on the basis of fresh material and a neotype designated. Two new species are described: Batasio fasciolatus n. sp. is described from material previously identified as B. tengana from the Brahmaputra River drainage and can be distinguished from congeners in having a combination of five to six vertical dark brown bars on a light brown body, dorsal-spine length 13Á6–16Á8% standard length (LS), pectoral-spine length 12Á7–14Á3% LS, and eye diameter 16Á5–18Á8% head length (LH). Batasio spilurus n. sp. is described from the Brahmaputra River drainage in Assam and can be distinguished from congeners in having a short adipose-fin base (12Á6–12Á8 v.14Á5–33Á3% LS) and more # slender caudal peduncle (5Á7–6Á2 v.6Á7–11Á8% LS). 2006 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles Key words: Brahmaputra; freshwater catfish; Ganges; India; Nepal. INTRODUCTION Species of Batasio Blyth, 1860, are small bagrid catfishes inhabiting the fresh waters of south and south-east Asia. They typically have laterally compressed heads and bodies, at least 35 vertebrae, and lack both an oar-like adipose fin and a prominent anterolateral process of the pelvic girdle.
