    Les GROUPES d’éDITION au ROYAUME-UNI Août 2006 Le marché britannique en bref… n 2005, le chiffre d’affaires valorisé au prix « consommateur » de l’édition au Royaume-Uni est estimé à £3,2 milliards (environ €4,6 milliards). Les principaux segments éditoriaux sont les essais, documents et livres pratiques (32,9 % de part de marché en 2003), Ela littérature générale (25,4 %), les livres universitaires et professionnels (16,3 %), la jeunesse (14,3 %), les ouvrages scientifiques, techniques et médicaux (8,1 %) et les manuels scolaires (2,7 %). Il existe 2 275 maisons d’édition et 90 d’entre elles ont un CA supérieur à £5 millions (€7,3 millions). Le secteur se caractérise par une forte concentration et par une internationalisation de plus en plus marquée : le rachat de Time Warner Book par Lagardère / Hachette Livre en février 2006 fait de ce groupe le leader du marché (16,2 % de parts de marché en 2005). À eux seuls les 5 premiers groupes d’édition au Royaume-Uni, Hachette (France), Random House (Allemagne), Pearson (Royaume-Uni), Harper Collins (États-Unis) et Macmillan (Allemagne) détiennent 53 % des parts du marché. Quant à Hachette et Random House, ils éditent 75 % des titres qui figurent actuellement dans le palmarès des 50 meilleures ventes anglaises. La répartition des ventes (2003) se fait ainsi : les grandes chaînes de librairies absorbent 43,7 % des ventes. Risk management Managing the Group’s tax affairs is a complex process across many functional areas of the business and as such there will inevitably be risks of error or omission within those processes (tax risks), which may result in the incorrect application of tax rules or calculation of tax returns. Eliminating tax risks entirely is impossible. Therefore, the Group’s attitude towards the level of control required over the processes designed to reduce these tax risks is driven by the likelihood of occurrence and scale of the impact of each risk. The identified tax risks are then assessed on a case by case basis, allowing the Group to arrive at well-reasoned conclusions on how each individual risk should be managed.

    AUTEUR Joséphine SEBLON COORDINATION Clémence THIERRY DÉPARTEMENT ÉTUDES SYNTHÈSE • Si l’édition est en mutation depuis la crise bancaire et financière de l’automne 2008, les Britanniques restent d’avides lecteurs et de grands consommateurs de livres. En effet, le marché éditorial britannique, avec ses 65 millions d’habitants, est le second plus grand marché d’Europe en valeur et le cinquième mondial derrière les États-Unis, la Chine, le Japon et l’Allemagne. • Les principaux éditeurs d’art au Royaume-Uni ne sont pas les grands groupes (Penguin Random House, Hachette Livre, Harper Collins ou Macmillan) mais plutôt des éditeurs indépendants et spécialisés dans le secteur (Thames & Hudson, Tate Publishing, Phaidon, Laurence King Publishing, Yale University Press etc.). En effet, les « Big Four » de l’édition britannique n’ont pas tous une division livres illustrés ou beaux livres mais certains de leurs imprints publient des livres d’art ou des livres illustrées notamment Penguin Books, Ebury Press et Particular Books chez Penguin Random House et les différents imprints d’Octopus chez Hachette Livre UK (Cassell, Conran Octopus, Mitchell Beazley, Ilex etc.). Harper Collins UK et Pan Macmillan publient peu de livres d’art. • En plus de coûts iconographiques élevés, les éditeurs de livre d’art britanniques sont également confrontés à l’explosion des médias numériques (Internet, téléchargement en ligne) et aux difficultés rencontrées par le marché du livre en général (saturation du marché, réduction du nombre de points de vente). On observe ainsi que le tirage moyen d’un livre d’art a considérablement diminué au cours des dix dernières années et cela a deux conséquences principales.
