Karl Barth and Hans Urs von Balthasar: a critical engagement Abstract This thesis examines the relationship between two major twentieth century theologians, Karl Barth and Hans Urs von Balthasar. It seeks to show how their meeting, resulting in von Balthasar’s seminal study The Theology of Karl Barth, goes on to influence von Balthasar’s theological development throughout his trilogy beginning with The Glory of the Lord, continuing in the Theo-Drama and concluding with the Theo-Logic. In particular it explores the significance of the debate over the ‘analogy of being’ and seeks to show that von Balthasar’s decision to structure his trilogy around the transcendentals of ‘being’, the beautiful, the good and the true, results from his re-affirmation of the role of analogy in light of his debate with Barth. -

Glasow, Ph.D. Director: William Loewe, Ph.D. This dissertation examines the contributions of Gerald O’Collins S. J. to fundamental theology over the past fifty years, focusing on three interconnected areas of insight: the relationship of history to revelation, the centrality of Christ, and ecumenism and inter- religious dialogue, noting their development over time in his theology. It provides a critical examination of O’Collins’s contributions to the field of fundamental theology— especially his insights into revelation and history, his focused Christocentrism, and his understanding of the relationship between Christianity and non-Christian religions. These interconnected themes form the core of his thought in fundamental theology and draw together important insights from various fields of interest, such as Christology, ecumenism, and Christian anthropology. This dissertation will show how O’Collins’s view of revelation and history informs his Christocentric perspective. Within his Christocentric perspective the resurrection plays a decisive role and opens several possibilities for the ongoing presence of Christ both in time and to all peoples, thus setting the groundwork for O’Collins’s ideas concerning faith and inter-religious dialogue and understanding. -

religions Article The Church in a Pluralistic World: The Public Vision of Ressourcement Gabriel Flynn School of Theology, Philosophy, and Music, Dublin City University, D09N920 Dublin, Ireland; gabriel.fl[email protected] Received: 13 August 2019; Accepted: 16 October 2019; Published: 24 October 2019 Abstract: The dual concern of this article is to present the vision of the church articulated by the renowned generation of Catholic ressourcement thinkers in the mid-twentieth century, and to demonstrate its continued fecundity in the pluralist, multi-cultural context of contemporary western society. It seeks to contribute primarily to ecclesiology, while also providing historical and social commentary with respectful suggestions for its relevance to present-day ecclesiology. The article provides an interpretative framework for understanding ressourcement with reference to its philosophical foundations and the vision of its founders. Its aims are, first, to articulate the role of ressourcement in the modern context and, secondly, to document the genesis and emergence of that movement’s perception of the church’s mandate in the world, based on an essential return to the sources of Christianity. The paper presents the public vision of ressourcement ecclesiology in two parts, drawing principally, though not exclusively, on the work of the two leading intellectual orders of the Catholic Church at the time of its formulation, namely, the Dominicans and the Jesuits of France. In this paper, I limit myself to the French-speaking Jesuits and Dominicans and do not refer to Rahner, Semmelroth, Schillebeeckx or Schoonenberg. Marquette University, 2012 While the name “Yves Congar” is recognizable by theologians and others there is a gap between recognition and familiarity: awareness that there was an Yves Congar is distinguished from knowing what he stood for and what he did. Eight years before Vatican II Congar was so distrusted by the Church that he was “distanced” from France for almost two years. Yet, several years after Vatican II he was elevated from priest to Cardinal in one day. Congar’s nouvelle théologie of ecumenism and unity, ressourcement and reform, changed the face of the Church to the world. In this, Congar had an impact on countless human beings. Many of his works, however, required translation from French, some for the first time. In this dissertation, Congar’s Principles of Ecumenism were systematically organized. -

Used with permission. 488 488 Lubac, Henri de, Cardinal, SJ (1896–1991) Lubac, Henri de, Cardinal, SJ (1896– 1991) Henri de Lubac was born on February20, 1896, in Cambrai (Nord), France, and died on September 4, 1991, in Paris. He studied law at the Catholic faculty, Lyon, from 1912 to 1913, philosophy on the island of Jersey from 1920 to 1923, and theology in Hastings, England, from1924 to 1926 and at Lyon- Fourvière from 1926 to 1927. De Lubac entered the Society of Jesus in Sussex, England, in 1913. He served in the French Army from 1915 to 1919. He was ordained a priest in 1927 and was professor of fundamental theol- ogy at the Institut Catholique de Lyon from 1929 to 1935. He was professor of theol- ogy at Fourvière from 1935 to 1950. He was co- founder, with Jean Daniélou, of Sources Chrétiennes, in 1940; co- founder, with Henri Bouillard, of the series, Théologie , from 1942; and editor of Recherches de science religieuse from 1945 to 1950. De Lubac was a member of the Institut de France (Académie des Sciences Morales) from 1953 and a consultor of the preparatory theological commissions for Vatican II from 1960 to 1962.
