Portier, Ph.D. Yves Congar’s theology of the laity and ministries is unified on the basis of his adaptation of Christ’s triplex munera to the laity and his specification of ministry as one aspect of the laity’s participation in Christ’s triplex munera. The seminal insight of Congar’s adaptation of the triplex munera is illumined by situating his work within his historical and ecclesiological context. The U.S. reception of Congar’s work on the laity and ministries, however, evinces that Congar’s principle insight has received a mixed reception by Catholic theologians in the United States due to their own historical context as well as their specific constructive theological concerns over the laity’s secularity, or the priority given to lay ministry over the notion of a laity. -

CURRENT THEOLOGY SOME RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN DOGMATIC THEOLOGY Life, they tell us, was simpler fifty years ago. We can at least hope this was true of the task of keeping abreast of developments in dogmatic theology. Today the most assiduous student is in danger of engulfment in the torrent of theological works that threatens to flood us all. While we must thank God for this extraordinary dynamism, we are none the less faced with a problem. How to cope with this growth? How indeed to discover the pub lished material? Language itself throws up one barrier. Theological litera ture, Catholic and otherwise, appears today in every tongue, including the Scandinavian.1 Catholic writers, largely deserting Latin, are thereby abandoning a ready-made international communications medium. And however valuable may be the rapports with the contemporary mind thus facilitated, only another Mezzofanti would find it easy to keep up with the published work of Catholic theologians. The "traditional reluctance of European publishers to sell their books after they have gone to the trouble of printing them," to which E. O'Brien, S.J., recently referred (THEOLOGICAL STUDIES 17 [1956] 39), does nothing to ease the burden of the English- speaking scholar. Slim budgets, small printings, and a deep-rooted failure to understand that "it pays to advertise" explain in part this vexing phe nomenon. But these we shall probably always have with us. Even as formidable a research student as Dr. Johannes Quasten has tasted of the frustration so discouraging to less hardy souls.2 Time and space permitting, 1 And the Flemish and the Irish. -

French Protestant Churches and the Persecution of the Jews in France Michael R. Marrus Generally speaking, French Protestantism was inevitably more sensitive to the predicament of the Jewish minority in France than the Catholic majority. Numbering about 600,000 on the eve of the war, Protestants were divided into several confessional groups, gathered under the umbrella of the Fédération Protestante de France. Themselves a minority, Protestants had a long history of being outside the religious mainstream and carried a historical memory of fierce persecution during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Further, they often had Jewish or German-sounding names, and of course were normally unable to produce baptismal certificates, useful in proving that the bearer was not Jewish. Ever since the advent of the Vichy regime, as pressure mounted against Jews and Freemasons, Protestants harbored fears of “a new clericalism,” of which they too might become victims. In the summer of 1941, Pastor Marc Boegner, president of the Fédération Protestante, heard widespread rumors that Protestants were next on Vichy’s list of enemies. Along with a handful of other Protestants, Marc Boegner was among the first to protest Vichy's anti-Jewish legislation. Of Alsatian background, and profoundly patriotic, Boegner was widely respected at Vichy as a figure of international standing. His words could not be ignored. Under instructions from the Eglise Réformée de France, of which he was also the head, he expressed his objectives in two letters, sent in March 1941, one to the head of government Admiral François Darlan (himself of protestant origins) and the other to Isaïe Schwartz, then Grand Rabbi of France. -

Portier, Ph.D. In its analysis of mystical body of Christ theology in the twentieth century, this dissertation identifies three major streams of mystical body theology operative in the early part of the century: the Roman, the German-Romantic, and the French-Social- Liturgical. Delineating these three streams of mystical body theology sheds light on the diversity of scholarly positions concerning the heritage of mystical body theology, on its mid twentieth-century recession, as well as on Pope Pius XII’s 1943 encyclical, Mystici Corporis Christi, which enshrined “mystical body of Christ” in Catholic magisterial teaching. Further, it links the work of Virgil Michel and Louis-Marie Chauvet, two scholars remote from each other on several fronts, in the long, winding French stream. -

Karl Barth and Hans Urs von Balthasar: a critical engagement Abstract This thesis examines the relationship between two major twentieth century theologians, Karl Barth and Hans Urs von Balthasar. It seeks to show how their meeting, resulting in von Balthasar’s seminal study The Theology of Karl Barth, goes on to influence von Balthasar’s theological development throughout his trilogy beginning with The Glory of the Lord, continuing in the Theo-Drama and concluding with the Theo-Logic. In particular it explores the significance of the debate over the ‘analogy of being’ and seeks to show that von Balthasar’s decision to structure his trilogy around the transcendentals of ‘being’, the beautiful, the good and the true, results from his re-affirmation of the role of analogy in light of his debate with Barth. -

Theological Studies 62 (2001) THE CONTRIBUTION OF YVES CONGAR’S THEOLOGY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT ELIZABETH TERESA GROPPE [The author highlights one of the primary contributions of Yves Congar’s pneumatology. In contrast to early-20th-century Roman Catholic theology that divorced reflection on the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the human person from a systematic ecclesiology, Congar developed a theology of personal indwelling that was in- separable from a theology of the Church. The author then illustrates the fruitfulness of Congar’s approach by using his theology con- structively to address the postconciliar discussion as to whether the Catholic Church is a hierarchy or a democracy.] RENCH DOMINICAN YVES CONGAR (1904–1995) expressed a desire to be F an Aeolian harp upon which the Spirit of God would blow, releasing harmonious melodies.1 His life of dedicated prayer, service, and scholar- ship were all signs of his fidelity to this calling. Indeed, Congar was not only an instrument of the Spirit of God, but also a theologian of the Spirit. The Preparation of the Second Vatican Council Two texts prepared for Vatican II by the Commission for Studies and Seminaries would have confirmedthe preeminent role of St. Thomas Aquinas in Catholic education. The first, entitled De sacrorum alumnis formandis,2 set out a two-year program in philosophy "to teach seminarians how to use the light of reason to examine truths about the nature of things and about human life and to provide the immediate preparation for the study of theology."· "Scholastic philosophy in all its parts," it said, "is to be transmitted according to the principles and method of St. Thomas Aquinas so that the students acquire his complete and coherent synthesis by solid and accurate study of his chief arguments," obsolete and trivial questions being omitted and "the more subtle questions" left for higher studies. Students were also to be introduced into a critical study of modern philosophical systems, particularly those influential in their own countries. Australian eJournal of Theology 4 (February 2005) Yves Congar: Apostle of Patience Robert Nugent SDS Abstract: Yves Congar, a French Dominican priest, was one of the pioneers in the Church's theology of ecumenism and the place of the laity in the Church. As with most pioneers breaking new ground and exploring new avenues, he encountered suspicion, hostility and active opposition and sanctions from Church authorities. For a time, he was banned for ecumenical work including speaking and lectures and banished from France to Rome and England. During all this he managed to maintain a deep love for the Church and a loyalty to his Order and to his deeply felt insights. His scholarly work has had a profound impact on contemporary theology. Eventually, he was exonerated and became one of the most influential theologians at the Second Vatican Council. Shortly before his death he was made a cardinal of the Church.
