From advertisements and posters to buttons and t-shirts, the artwork Faust designed can be found on almost anything related to the 10-day event. "I've always loved live theatre; I chose to lend my creative services in honor of my dear friend and patron Karl R. Zimmer, Jr.," Faust said. Zimmer was an early Faust supporter, buying his work when Faust was still in school. Zimmer, now retired from Zimmer Paper Products, is on the board of the Athenaeum Foundation. Faust, a Lapel native, has lived in Indiana almost his entire life. He is a graduate of IU Herron School of Art and Design and received his master's from University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Faust first came to national attention when he was commissioned to depict Indiana for the award-winning ABSOLUT Vodka's "ABSOLUT Statehood" 1992- 1993, $3.5 million campaign. He was also invited to be on the N.A.S.A. Art Team for the Mission to Planet Earth project in which he created the painting "Vigilant Shepard." Faust's work has been exhibited widely in the U.S.A. Over the past decade in Indiana, his vibrant canvases have been displayed in the Richmond Art Museum, the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the Snite Museum of Art at Notre Dame.

DPW will collect residents’ yard waste curbside and it will be composted. Spring collection runs for four weeks from April 28th to May 23rd. Summer collection will be during the weeks of June 16th, July 14th, August 11th, and September 15th. Fall collection runs for seven weeks, from October 13th to November 28th. Yard waste collection instructions: • Place leaves and yard debris in large paper leaf bags or open barrels labeled “yard waste” (no plastic bags). Transforming the traditional sitcom: Abed in Community Shannon WELLS-LASSAGNE At first glance, NBC’s freshman comedy Community appears to be the perfect example of a high-concept sitcom: the main character Jeff Winger is a lawyer who has been disbarred for fake diplomas, and who therefore has to go back to school at a community college in order to regain his job. He is surrounded by fellow students, the stereotypical misfits that people sitcoms: the matronly single black mother, the uptight overachiever, the dumb and arrogant jock, the attractive hippy (and love interest), and the retiree going back to school, whose cluelessness is butt of the majority of the jokes. However, a final character, Abed, seems almost extraneous to the proceedings: he is a half Polish, half Palestinian film student, who suffers from Asperger’s and therefore has a difficult time understanding the relationships around him.

The Power of the Carnival Satirist: Taking Laughter Seriously David Charles Rollins College Spontaneous theatre forms, such as street theatre, short-form improvisation, and community-based performances, unmistakably share a common and pervasive audience response: laughter. As Jerry Palmer observes in Taking Humour Seriously, humor and laughter are key elements of most human communication to some degree. “[L]isten to any conversation and it is full of jokes, puns, humourous allusions, [and] word play for the sake of it,” he writes (1). Theatrical enterprises undoubtedly refl ect and magnify this all-too-human fondness for wit and whimsy, and yet many do not engage in the pursuit of laughter merely “for the sake of it.” Improvisational performance practices, in particular, historically heighten and exploit this innate communicative tendency to a serious end. Hidden beneath the frequently overt comedic façade often lurks a more politicized agenda predicated on a particular form of laughter—that of the carnival satirist. Russian literary theorist, Mikhail Bakhtin, explicates the notion of this playful clown fi gure operating in the highly participatory world of the carnival, a world that “brings together, unifi es, weds, and combines the sacred with the profane, the lofty with the low, the great with the insignifi cant, the wise with the stupid” (Problems 123). The carnivalesque, as a performance site and mode, offers a highly dialogic realm with its tireless satiric employment and redeployment of the symbols of the oppressor and oppressed alike. In Bakhtin’s paradigmatic carnival- inspired playground, messiness supplants order, playful laughter combats dogmatic seriousness, and spontaneous surprise undermines authoritative control.
