The phylogeny of the Cicadina (Homoptera, Cicadina) based on comparative morphological data A.F. Emel’yanov Transactions of the All-Union Entomological Society Morphological principles of insect phylogeny The phylogenetic relationships of the principal groups of cicadine* insects have been considered on more than one occasion, commencing with Osborn (1895). Some phylogenetic schemes have been based only on data relating to contemporary cicadines, i.e. predominantly on comparative morphological data (Kirkaldy, 1910; Pruthi, 1925; Spooner, 1939; Kramer, 1950; Evans, 1963; Qadri, 1967; Hamilton, 1981; Savinov, 1984a), while others have been constructed with consideration given to paleontological material (Handlirsch, 1908; Tillyard, 1919; Shcherbakov, 1984). As the most primitive group of the cicadines have been considered either the Fulgoroidea (Kirkaldy, 1910; Evans, 1963), mainly because they possess a small clypeus, or the cicadas (Osborn, 1895; Savinov, 1984), mainly because they do not jump. In some schemes even the monophyletism of the cicadines has been denied (Handlirsch, 1908; Pruthi, 1925; Spooner, 1939; Hamilton, 1981), or more precisely in these schemes the Sternorrhyncha were entirely or partially depicted between the Fulgoroidea and the other cicadines. In such schemes in which the Fulgoroidea were accepted as an independent group, among the remaining cicadines the cicadas were depicted as branching out first (Kirkaldy, 1910; Hamilton, 1981; Savinov, 1984a), while the Cercopoidea and Cicadelloidea separated out last, and in the most widely acknowledged systematic scheme of Evans (1946b**) the last two superfamilies, as the Cicadellomorpha, were contrasted to the Cicadomorpha and the Fulgoromorpha. At the present time, however, the view affirming the equivalence of the four contemporary superfamilies and the absence of a closer relationship between the Cercopoidea and Cicadelloidea (Evans, 1963; Emel’yanov, 1977) is gaining ground.

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new scale insect, Aolacoccus angophorae gen. nov. and sp. nov. (Eriococcidae), is described from the bark of Ango- phora (Myrtaceae) growing in the Sydney area of New South Wales, Australia. These insects do not produce honeydew, are not ant-tended and probably feed on cortical parenchyma. The adult female is pupillarial as it is retained within the cuticle of the penultimate (second) instar. The crawlers (mobile first-instar nymphs) emerge via a flap or operculum at the posterior end of the abdomen of the second-instar exuviae. The adult and second-instar females, second-instar male and first-instar nymph, as well as salient features of the apterous adult male, are described and illustrated. The adult female of this new taxon has some morphological similarities to females of the non-pupillarial palm scale Phoenicococcus marlatti Cockerell (Phoenicococcidae), the pupillarial palm scales (Halimococcidae) and some pupillarial genera of armoured scales (Diaspididae), but is related to other Australian Myrtaceae-feeding eriococcids.

  • The Cytology of Tasmanian Short-Horned Grasshoppers ( Orthoptera: Acridoidea)
PAP. & PROC. ROY. Soc. TASMANIA. VOL. 86. (15TH SEPTEMBER. 1952.) The Cytology of Tasmanian Short-Horned Grasshoppers ( Orthoptera: Acridoidea) By G. B. SHARMAN Department of Botany, University of Tasmania* WITH 1 PLATE AND 57 TEXT FIGURES SUMMARY The cytology of twenty-six of the twenty-nine species of short-horned grass hoppers (superfamily Acridoidea) recorded from Tasmania is described. Intra specific cytological polymorphism is described in some species. Cytological evidence of phylogenetic relationships has been indicated where possible. INTRODUCTION Mainly because of their large size, and general suitability for cyto logical study the chromosomes of the short-horned grasshoppers (super family Acridoidea) have been the subject of wide research. In the largest and most widely studied family, the Acrididae, early workers (McClung, 1905; Davis, 1908) reported the male number as being uniformly twenty three rod-shaped chromosomes, but Granata (1910) showed that Pam phagus possessed nineteen rod-shaped chromosomes. With few exceptions an XO sex chromosome sy~tem is found. Later work has shown that one group of subfamilies of the Acrididae is characterised by the male diploid number of· nineteen rod-shaped chromosomes, whilst another and larger group is characterised by the male diploid number of twenty-three. These are usually called the ten and twelve chromosome groups, and correspond to the Chasmosacci and Cryptosacci groups of subfamilies (Roberts, 1941). Cytologically the Chasmosacci is a very uniform group as has been shown by Rao (1937) and Powers (1942). The twelve chromosome group, how ever, has some cytological variability. In more than forty genera the characteristic male diploid chromosome number of twenty-three is found (White, 1945) ; but" centric fusions" (White, 1945) have been responsible for lowering the chromosome number of some species, although the characteristic twenty-three arms are still found.

Bull. ent. Res. 73, 137-151 137 Published 1983 l'TIte assessment of mealybugs (Pseudococcidae) and other Homoptera on mame cocoa trees in Ghana / C. A. M. CAMPBELL * Cocoa Research Institute, P.O. Box 8, New Tafo, Ghqna Abstract The numbers of mealybugs and other Homoptera on 96 coco a trees in Ghana were assessed by examining four branches from each tree. The trees were then felled and examined in detail. Ten species of mealybugs, eight other coccoids, an aphid and a psyIlid were recorded. Ninety-five of the trees were infested with mealybugs, 66, 90 and 69 trees, respectively, with Planococcoides njalensis (Laing), Planococcus citri (Risso) and Phenacoccus htJrgreavesi (Laing). Stictococcus sjostedti CkIl., a species of Gascardia near G. zonata (Newst.) and Mesohomotoma tessmanni (Aulm.) were found on 70, 68 and 48 trees, respectively. The remaining 14 species were found on fewer than 48 trees. All species oíher than Pseudococcus calceolariae (Mask.) and Ferrisia virgata (Ckll.) were most prevalent in the canopy. In the field, mealybug densities recorded on shoots underesti mated true leveIs by an average of 95%. Branches were as effective as whole trees for detecting mealybugs, but less effective for other Homoptera. Branches were suitable sample units for estimating population densities of mealybugs, stictococcids and psyIlids. All species of mealybug other than F. virgata infested vegetative buds. An average of 21'7% of buds on the youngest shoots were infested. Samples of buds can be used for detecting mealybug infestations. Introduction Mealybugs (Pseudococcidae) of cocoa are important pests in West Africa because most species are vectors of cocoa swollen shoot virus (CSSV).

  • Aspects of the Biology and Taxonomy of British Myrmecophilous Root Aphids
Aspects of the biology and taxonomy of British myrmecophilous root aphids. by Richard George PAUL, BoSc.(Lond.),17.90.(Glcsgow). Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosopk,. of the University of London and for the Diploma of Imperial Colleao Decemi)or 1977. Dopartaent o:vv. .;:iotory)c Cromwell Road. 1.0;AMOH )t=d41/: -1- ABSTRACT. This thesis concerns the biology and taxonomy of root feeding aphids associated with British ants. A root aphid for the purposes of this thesis is defined as an aphid which, during at least part of its life cycle feeds either (a) beneath the normal soil surface or (b) beneath a tent of soil that has been placed over it by ants. The taxonomy of the genera Paranoecia and Anoecia has been revised and some synonomies proposed. Chromosome numbers have been discovered for Anoecia spp. and are used to clarify the taxonomy. The biology of Anoecia species has been studied and new facts about their life cycles have been discovered. A key is given to the British r European, African and North American species of Anoeciinae and this is included in a key to British myrmecophilous root aphids. Suction trap catches (1968-1976) from about twenty British traps have been used as a record of seasonal flight patterns for root aphids. All the Anoecia species caught in 1975 and 1976 were identified on the basis of new taxonomic work. Catches which had formerly all been identified as Anoecia corni were found to be A. corni, A. varans and A. furcata. The information derived from the catches was used to plot relative abundance and distribution maps for the three species.

  • Dosage Compensation of the Sex-Linked
Heredity (1984), 53 (2), 361—369 1984. The Genetical Society of Great Britain DOSAGECOMPENSATION OF THE SEX-LINKED ENZYME PHOSPHOGLUCOMUTASE IN THE 0 RTH 0 PTE RA DARCY R. HEBBERT Department of Zoology, University of Western Australia Nedlands, Western Australia 6009 Received(Re-submitted) 29.iii.84 SUMMARY Sex-linkageof phosphoglucomutase (PGM) is widespread in the Orthoptera. For each of three species studied (representing the two suborders), the specific activity of PGM in males (the heterogametic sex) is almost identical to that in females, providing direct evidence that the difference in gene dose of a sex-linked locus in males and females is compensated in the Orthoptera. The Orthoptera is only the third group for which compensation has been demonstrated. Dosage compensation has been investigated in three orders of insects: it is present in Orthoptera and Diptera but absent in Lepidoptera. It is postulated that dosage compensation arose or was present in related archopteran ancestors and has been secondarily lost in Lepidoptera, possibly in association with female heterogamety in this group. 1. INTRODUCTION In diploid, sexually reproducing organisms, the heterogametic sex, which carries a pair of heteromorphic sex chromosomes (XY or ZW), has only half as many copies of each X-linked gene as the homogametic sex of the same species. Yet, in a number of cases, differences in the activities of X-linked genes have been shown to be of selective importance and one would expect such an inequality in gene dose, if left uncompensated, to result in differential selection between the sexes. In both mammals and Drosophila there is "compensation" for this difference in gene dose, so ensuring that males and females produce equal amounts of enzymes from such sex-linked genes.
