2017 saw another great season for the Newenden 1st XI. Throughout the games and various formats the teams showed amazing depth, from the School boys, university boys to older boys. As with previous seasons we gave some of the larger league clubs a demonstration in the art of village cricket. There were some stand out performances with the bat from Morris and Sloan at the top of the order, and great middle order hitting and game management from the likes of Jasper Piper, Will Simpson and new boy Ben Browning. Notable mention must also go to Jonesy Jnr who notched up his maiden half century for the club, and outscored his old man for what will be the first of many seasons to come. The Bowling attack was once again driven by the ever dependable Smith and Bradney, taking close to fifty wickets between them and more often than not laying the foundation for victory. Jasper Piper took an impressive 20 wickets to add to his 400+ runs, and academy starlet Alex Barleet is certainly one to watch in 2018. Off the pitch Phil & Nicola pulled off another successful and thoroughly enjoyable fun day, raising much needed funds for the club and demonstrating the energy and dedication of the members. We move into the 2018 season stronger than ever, and with the establishment of the new Wealden Wallop 20/20 tournament and our inaugural entry into the National Village Cup, watch this space for continued success and the abundance of silverware. We welcome one and all to come to the ground on match day to enjoy the cricket and observe some of the finest sandwich making of an era. Jonesy

7 JUNIOR RUN DOWN

2017 was a vintage season for the Newenden Junior section. The weather was uniformly glorious, and we did not lose a single scheduled practice or match to rain. We were lucky enough to play most of our games at home on Monday night bathed in glorious sun. The setting was magnificent and huge thanks as ever needs to go to groundsman Peter Bourne. The U12s won the East Sussex league at first attempt as the unbeaten side in the competition guided by the accomplished captaincy of Gutteridge H. On the batting front, Durtnell W was ever reliable batting at number 4, topping the run scoring retiring 30 not out a number of times with his signature deft late cut to the fore. Taggart N continued to punch way above his weight as but a ten-year-old in the middle order. Special mention should go to Hall T whose batting was ‘most improved’ this year making some very handy runs further down the order. The rest of the boys all chipped in. Gutteridge H produced the innings of the season against Hailsham, smashing a Chris Gayle-esque 33 not out off about 10 balls opening up the innings. Vice-captain Bottle K was the all-rounder engine room of the team accumulating the 2nd highest number of runs batting in his methodical fashion at number 3 and taking 2nd highest number of wickets with some very accurate seam spells. Bowling was a real team effort with everyone making a contribution. Anthony G, Braxton H and Gutteridge H bowled aggressively and to good effect. Braxton A found a consistently nagging line and length and took the breath-taking catch of the season off his own bowling. Bond T is also one to watch for the future as he bowled some excellent spells. Taggart A’s offspin was a joy to watch – he bowls with lovely flight and his bowling should be given as much focus as his elegant batting. Hall T was yet again the pick of the bunch, opening the bowling with gusto and topping the wicket taking stats again this season with a great blend of zip and precision. Wicketkeeping duties were shared. Young Taggart N, with what looked like nothing more than a pair of flimsy Marigolds on his tiny mitts, put in the heroic stint of the season behind the stumps at Hailsham on a rock hard mid 2000’s WACA type track. His shift required salmon- leaping exploits to handle the county pace quick bowling of guest Gorman C with carry through of a good 15 yards at chest level. Durtnell W and Taggart A also kept tidily. The icing on the cake was our U9s playing their first ever hard ball fixture. When batting, many of the boys arrived at the crease looking like a walking pair of pads with a helmet perched precariously on top. And yet we still beat an older and much more experienced Cranbrook Under 10s side in a thriller that went down to the last ball. A huge thanks from the boys to coaches Gutteridge, Hall, Durtnell, Braxton and Preston plus all the parents who lent a hand on any given Sunday/Monday with crowd control and the café. Simon Bottle

8 JUNIOR FIXTURES 2018

Newenden youth coaching, which is for school Year 1 (ages 5-6) to school Year 8 (ages 12-13), will kickoff on Sunday 29th April and will end on a date to be determined in August. Sessions will start at 10am for everyone and last 90 minutes for U10s and 2 hours for U13s. We will be aiming to arrange our league matches for Saturdays to ensure our players who play for their district/county on a Sunday are available for these. We are currently waiting on details of who will be in our league to then organise dates/times. We’ll slot some friendlies into Sundays once all league fixtures are in the diary as appropriate. A full schedule of training dates and fixtures for all age groups will be circulated by email as soon as possible once all details are available. Once the season kicks off, we will also send out a monthly schedule summary at the beginning of each month and a weekly confirmation of what is happening each weekend to ensure it’s all clear! 18 THE END OF AN INNINGS

There are few more thankless and time-consuming ways to sacrifice your free time than taking on the role of village cricket groundsman. Come the weekend you are public enemy number one to deluded batsmen up and down the county, who never exit the crease post-dismissal without a disparaging glance or a hopeful prod of the perfectly good surface that orchestrated their demise. “Kept low” or “Bloody wicket” is the usual pre-cursor to the pavilion bat throw as another mediocre swordsman misses a straight one or spoons their non-existent cover drive to the nearest fielder. Each strip requires around 4-5 hours of pre-match preparation (the majority of this taken up with the mind numbing task of operating an archaic rolling device) and it is a labour born more out of desperate necessity (i.e. the lack of competent and willing candidates) than love. Most village and club players stride out onto their glorious village green in the belief that the square and outfield are simply part of the local geology and have been formed in this manner since time immemorial. Late last summer time was called on the innings of one of the last true heroes and servants of the village cricket circuit. Bryan Feaver was Sandhurst cricket club through and through and below are some words penned in his memory by Mike Cutler, Chairman of Sandhurst CC: “Bryan took on the position of Hon. Secretary of Sandhurst Cricket Club in 1972 on a temporary basis. At the time of his sudden and unexpected death on the 6th August 2017 he still held that position and was also President. Apart from the usual Secretarial duties Bryan spent hours on the roller going up and down the square and more hours on other wicket maintenance and match day preparations. For forty-six years he was unstinting in his service to the Club all done as a volunteer and without payment. He was a supreme example of those people who keep amateur sports clubs going. He was a true “clubman” and this was recognized when in 2014 he received The Alan Albury Award for volunteers in Kent cricket clubs. The presentation was made at Canterbury by Derek Underwood (pictured). During his many years involved with village cricket locally and in Kent further afield Bryan made many friends in other clubs and upon his death we received many condolences. They, like us, were shocked about his early departure. Bryan played cricket on the day before he died, at the ripe old age of 76. In latter years Bryan specialized in taking catches at long on and perhaps he would have chosen to close his innings by taking a catch at long on to give us a win against our friends at Newenden CC.” BRYAN JOHN FEAVER 1941 – 2017 Bryan embodied the very essence of community and dedication that lays the foundation for a thriving village cricket club that make it possible for all us all to engage in our beloved pastime. It is therefore worth remembering once your wicket falls, that it is far more likely to be your shoddy technique, lack of practice and absence of talent, rather than the relatively carpet like surface that you are privileged to play on every weekend.
