  • Everywhere and Nowhere: the Forgotten Past and Clouded Future of American Professional Soccer from the Perspective of Massachusetts Steven Apostolov*
Soccer & Society Vol. 13, No. 4, July 2012, 510–535 Everywhere and nowhere: the forgotten past and clouded future of American professional soccer from the perspective of Massachusetts Steven Apostolov* Department of Political Science, University of Massachusetts, Lowell, MA, USA Professional soccer in the USA enjoyed several moments of popularity through- out the twentieth century. Professional soccer leagues were founded, some as early as the 1890s. In spite of that, the sport has never caught fire at the profes- sional level. Soccer leagues have not only been in the shadow of baseball, foot- ball, basketball and, most recently, ice hockey, but with the exception of Major League Soccer, a newcomer on the mainstream sporting scene, all of them have folded within a couple of decades. This essay provides insight as to why profes- sional soccer has failed to attain the status of a major American sport. It also analyses the development of professional soccer in the USA through the scope of immigration and from the perspective of Massachusetts. Introduction US soccer is not a common topic among historians. It is not a common topic among soccer fans, either. If you ask any admirer of sports to name the world’s fin- est nations in soccer, the list will be long. Depending on their nationality, different soccer lovers will provide different answers. The Dutch would only grudgingly con- cede the Spaniards played better in the 2010 World Cup final, and Brazilians still believe they had the ability to capture a sixth World Cup title in South Africa. It would never occur to a soccer fan, however, to include the USA among the world’s leading powers of the game.

British Columbia Soccer Association Honorary Life Member Biographies November 2019 British Columbia Soccer Association Honorary Life Member Biographies Life Membership of the British Columbia Soccer Association is presented to individuals in recognition of long-time service and distinguished contributions to soccer in British Columbia. BC Soccer Honorary Life Members include those who became Life Members of BC Soccer or of BC Youth Soccer prior to the amalgamation in 1998 and those who have become Life Members of the BC Soccer Association since 1999. Up to 2019, life membership has been bestowed on 81 people who have made a lasting impact on the development of the sport in BC over the last 120 years. This document gives short biographies of all Life Members of the Association. Where known, in each case their profile includes: a photograph; a one-sentence summary; how they became involved in soccer; their history and achievements as a player, coach, official and in leadership positions; and their awards and recognition. We have tried to keep the profiles within 250 words. Profiles are available for all life members, but information is limited on the earliest inductees. Similarly, the specific dates on which some Life Members who were inducted before 1963 are not known. This document was prepared by Life Members Roger Barnes and Rob Brown. They drew on profiles in the 1998 BC Youth Annual Report, other BC Soccer publications, published newspaper sources and much appreciate biographical notes and help from Life Members and others in the community. We expect that this report contains some errors and omissions.

MORE THAN MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT JUST A UNION! Ladies and Gentlemen: It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the second annual Toronto Azzurri Soccer Club’s Wall of Fame Induction Gala. As it was the case for our inaugural event last year, all the 2018 inductees played a significant role in paving the way for many aspiring players, coaches, and managers towards improving their respective skills in the “Beautiful Game”. I accepted the role of Project Manager for the construction of our clubhouse because I felt it was important to continue with and expand on our mission statement to “Teach Soccer and Build Character”. As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary, I am proud to be the president of a club which has evolved into a philanthropic organization which has touched the lives of children, widows and orphans, locally and across the ocean in Italy. Last year thanks to our tireless Under 17 International Youth Soccer Committee, the Azzurri donated $20,000.00 to each of two orphans of the Rigopiano Avalanche in Abruzzo. The LiUNA Families are proud to be part This year we intend to equal, if not surpass, last year’s success and donate one half of the net proceeds to Mens Sana, a well deserving Woodbridge organization devoted to helping people of the Toronto Azzurri Soccer Clu b and with mental disabilities. Our community work has also sparked the interest of Unipromos, Associazione Di Provenzione the Azzurri LiUNA Club house. MORE THAN LETTER FROM THE CHAIR JUST A UNION! The Toronto Azzurri Soccer Wall of Fame When the new Toronto Azzurri Soccer Club was conceived and our vision to build a Soccer Center of Excellence was approved in 1999, we could not have understood then how important the project would become. After numerous years of great memories from the love and passionate sacrifice given by so many, it is with great honour and pride that tonight we launch The Toronto Azzurri Soccer Wall of Fame. As efforts continue to develop aspiring Canadian soccer youth, the Toronto Azzurri Youth Sport Village through its programming, will do its part to pass on our knowledge and experience to those we touch in our community. However, unless we educate the new arrivals about the stories of our heroes, and what it took for our pioneers and builders to lay the game’s foundations in our great city, we cannot complete their sport education. On behalf of all the people who lit the torch, who persevered, led only by their hearts and passions, to those who dared to risk and fail, and finally to The LiUNA Families are proud to be part those who inspired us to be the best that we could be, I can offer only my sincere and eternal thanks. of the Toronto Azzurri Soccer Clu b and Tonight’s first twelve honourees are just the beginning. There are so many who deserve to be recognized. This ceremony will occur annually so please help by assisting us to select those who deserve our appreciation.

SOCCER LEAGUES {Appendix 5, to Sports Facility Reports, Volume 15} Research completed as of August 1, 2014 MAJOR ARENA SOCCER LEAGUE (MASL) Team: Baltimore Blast Principal Owner: Edwin F. Hale, Sr. Current Value ($/Mil): N/A Team Website Stadium: Baltimore Arena Date Built: 1962 Facility Cost ($/Mil): N/A Facility Financing: N/A Facility Website UPDATE: The City of Baltimore is still looking to start a private-public partnership for a new 18,500-seat arena to replace the aging 1st Mariner Arena, which will cost around $500 million. Private funding would go towards the new stadium, while public funding would be used to build a convention center. In March 2012, the state legislature declined to give $2,500,000 for design proposals until a more firm commitment to the project from the City of Baltimore is verbalized. • Sporting Multiculturalism: Toronto's Postwar European Immigrants

Supervisory Committee Sporting Multiculturalism: Toronto’s Postwar European Immigrants, Gender, Diaspora, and the Grassroots Making of Canadian Diversity by Stephen Fielding B.A. (Hons), University of Winnipeg, 2005 M.A., Simon Fraser University, 2008 Supervisory Committee Dr. Jordan Stanger-Ross, (Department of History) Supervisor Dr. Lynne Marks, (Department of History) Departmental Member Dr. Eric Sager, (Department of History) Departmental Member Dr. Avigail Eisenberg, (Department of Political Science) Outside Member ii Abstract This dissertation offers an alternative lens to understand Canada’s gradual embrace of multiculturalism. Scholars have typically “worked back” from Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau’s famous 1971 declaration to unearth the origins of multicultural legislation, focusing on departmental policies, intense lobbying by ethnic organizations, and changing attitudes during the sixties’ container of “third force” (of neither English nor French origin) activism. This story of Canadian multiculturalism is told from the grassroots level of immigrant leisure, where a pluralistic envisioning of English Canada was foreshadowed, renegotiated, and acted out “from below.” It argues that the thousands of European immigrant men who played and watched sports on Toronto’s sport periphery were agents of change.
