Canon Tibbatts, who has served both as Secretary-General and Superior, is uniquely qualified to tell the story. His association with the Oratory began in his undergraduate days at Kings in the l920ies. He knew personally the founding fathers and enjoyed their friendship. In the years preceding the first world war three young clerical dons (John How, Eric Milner-White and Edward Wynn) sought to establish a society for celibate priests, bound by a common rule of life, marked by Catholic discipline of prayer and devotion, and characterised by the importance attached to regular and systematic study in the life of a priest Their inspiration was drawn from the Catholic revival of the previous century, and they were concerned to make a distinctive witness in the religious life of the University. The ethos of the Oratory was, and has continued to be essentially Anglican in its Catholic form. The devotion to Our Lord as the Good Shepherd, the adoption of Nicholas Ferrar of Little Gidding as patron, testify to the pastoral ideal and English temper of the Oratory.

You overcame the sting of death and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. ibid (AAPB) I consider it a great privilege to be asked to preach at this service in which the Diocese of The Murray pays its respects to, and gives thanks to God for, its second bishop, Graham Howard Walden. I thank Bishop John Ford, the fourth bishop, for giving me this honour, I am humbled by it and I pray that I may indeed both pay adequate tribute to this man, whom we all loved, and also proclaim clearly and forcefully to you the gospel of the risen Lord by which he lived, which sustained him in suffering, and in which he died. On behalf of all of you I express my condolences to Margaret, Bishop Walden’s widow, and to their children and assure them of my prayers.     The Murray Anglican Anniversary Edition Fifty Years Plus One The Best Laid Plans… 2020 - the year that two well-known sayings - the best laid plans of mice and men and life is what happens while you are busy making other plans - came home to roost. The Committee of this publication had planned to produce a special edition of The Murray Anglican to be released on the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Diocese. However, COVID-19 put paid to all planned 50th anniversary celebrations and production of that special edition was put on the backburner where it sat for several months waiting for the right time to complete and publish it. It has been a challenging year on many levels but also a rewarding year in that we have learnt new ways of doing things and new ways of keeping in touch. In the early days of COVID, we all hoped that it would soon be over and that it would not take long for things to get back to normal but we quickly learned that we would have to learn a new normal and just as we were getting used to that new normal, the goal posts shifted again and we had to learn a new, new normal. With all this in mind, we came to the conclusion that it was highly unlikely that there would ever be a right time to publish this special edition, so a decision was made to just get on with it and publish it and we aimed to have it out in time for Christmas.

The fi re was noticed at around 1:00am, and by the time the fi re brigade arrived shortly afterwards it was burning too fi ercely to allow the fi re fi ghters to enter the building. The interior of the building was com- pletely destroyed, and part of the roof collapsed in the blaze. All the stained glass windows have also been destroyed. Parish priest James Hodson and the church wardens notifi ed members of the church before they arrived for Sunday morning services. Australia has historically been noted as a very secular society but in recent years there has been some scholarly attention to forms of spirituality outside of the orthodox, Church religion. In matters of national identity and commitment to place it is argued that there could be an upsurge in spirituality, in contrast to the decline of those practising formal religion. In this dissertation it is argued that two journeys undertaken by contemporary Australians can be considered true pilgrimages with spiritual dimensions and are therefore part of a growing spirituality apart from formal Church.
