ALMEDA FISK GALLUP TRUST

Do you know someone unable to afford medical costs relating to vision, hearing, and dental needs? If yes, they may qualify for financial assistance from the Almeda Fisk Gallup Trust.

The Oshkosh Seniors Center is proud to participate in the awarding of funds given to the Center from the Almeda Fisk Gallup Trust, the mission of the trust is to provide assistance to City of Oshkosh residents in need of vision, hearing and dental needs. Over the years the Oshkosh Seniors Center has awarded funding to applicants demonstrating a financial need for these services.

The Almeda Fisk Gallup Trust was established in the late 1920’s and for nearly 90 years it has been a generous gift that keeps on giving. One gentlemen came to the Center to apply for help in getting dentures. He’s been in touch with us a few times since he’s received his new dentures and he’s quite happy with the difference it has made in his life. He’s more confident, able to eat better and most importantly, he can share a smile!

Another recipient’s eyesight was failing, she could not afford the $700.00 prescription for a new pair of glasses. The trust paid for her new glasses. Her eyesight and her awareness of her surroundings is much improved.

If you know of a person in need please have them contact Bobbie Jo Luft at the Oshkosh Seniors Center for information regarding eligibility and instructions on how to apply for the Almeda Fisk Gallup Trust. (Bobbie Jo Luft, 920.232.5301)

Tips for Successful Strength Training

Strength Training is so important to do as part of a healthy lifestyle, especially as you get older because your muscle mass gradually decreases over time. But it is also very important to do it correctly to not only gain the benefits of it, but also to prevent injury. Below are a couple aspects of your weight training routine you’ll want to look at for guaranteed success.

Frequency and Intensity The American College of Sports Medicine recommends you lift weights 2-3 days per week, working all of your major muscle groups. These include back, chest, shoulders, hamstrings, quadriceps, abdominals, triceps, and biceps. Try to have a day of rest between strength training days if possible to prevent muscle injury or soreness. It is recommended to perform 10-12 repetitions for each exercise in a 30 second exercise time frame. The resistance level chosen on our Circuit Machines in the FFC should provide sufficient resistance to bring a user close to fatigue by the end of 30 seconds. Performing 1-3 sets of these exercises will build muscle endurance. When beginning a strength training program, it is recommended that you stay at the same weight level throughout the circuit.

Speed Slow=Better Lifting a weight is called the “positive” phase of a repetition. The positive phase should take roughly four seconds. When the lift reaches its peak, pause for two seconds. Then the “negative” phase (lowering the weight) should take four seconds to return to starting position. Lifting slowly prolongs muscle tension and increases blood flow. Therefore, slow reps are intended to grow and build muscles.

Breathing To properly breathe during strength training, exhale during the concentric phase—while you're lifting the weight, and inhale on the eccentric phase—as you're lowering the weight and coming back to your starting position. Breathing this way will make it easier to perform the exercise.

** Proper use of the Life Fitness Circuit Machines in FFC** When buttons are pushed in, the weight is engaged. When the buttons are pulled out, the weight is not in use. For example: If using resistance level 4, all buttons up through 4 should be pushed in, and all others should be pulled out.
