I hope all our supporters are rewarded by a trip to France in 2016. Apart from being in a strong qualifying position two Northern Ireland records have been established in the tournament, the first time we have won three consecutive competitive games and the first two away consecutive wins in competitive games. The U17 men's international team had success in getting to the Elite stage of the U17 European Championship and performed admirably against Belgium and Netherlands, two of the best teams in Europe at this age. At this time last year I referred to the introduction of our Elite Development Programme and after twelve months we can now see the early benefits of this approach and in time it will produce more top players for Northern Jim Shaw Ireland and sustain success on the international President, Irish Football Association stage. The Cultural Politics of Remembrance: Sport, Place and Memory In
The Cultural Politics of Remembrance: Sport, Place and Memory in Belfast and Berlin Alan Bairner (Loughborough University) Introduction ‘What we see isn’t what we see but who we are’ (Fernando Pessoa, The Book of Disquiet, p. 371). According to Yael Zerubavel (1994: 118), ‘ the study of the cultural interplay of “history” and “legend” reveals the transformative character of collective memory and its susceptibility to conflicting views that turn the past into a contested arena’. Nowhere is this more apparent than in societies with particularly troubled histories and nowhere are the issues contested more vigorously than in relation to the use of space for remembrance. This article examines the cultural politics surrounding the monumentalization of social space in two such cities – Belfast and Berlin. More specifically, the article considers the ways in which sporting spaces become implicated in the politics of memory, focussing above all on the proposal to build a new ‘national’ stadium for Northern Ireland alongside an International Conflict Transformation Centre on the site previously occupied by HM Prison Maze (or Long Kesh as it was known by its inmates) on the outskirts of Belfast. The article argues that, long after physical conflict is over, remembrance and the spaces used to construct and reproduce collective memory continue to be contested. 1 ‘Space and place’, according to Yi-Fu Tuan (1977: 3), ‘are basic components of the lived world; we take them for granted’. That said, space is only natural in part for, as Henri Lefebvre (1991: 77) observes, ‘social space contains a great diversity of objects, both natural and social, including the networks and pathways which facilitate the exchange of material things and information’. -
Shamrock Rovers and the Return to Kevin O'connor to Cork City
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Welcome to the 2019 SSE Airtricity League. It is great to have the domestic game back and this is a truly exhilarating time of the year. Last season proved to be exciting throughout the campaign as Dundalk secured the domestic double, the SSE Airtricity League and the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup in emphatic style. Stephen Kenny's proved to be the team to beat last season after a fantastic campaign as Pat Hoban led the goalscoring charts with 29 goals. The Lilywhites will have a period of adjustment though after Stephen Kenny left for the FAI to take on the Republic of Ireland Under-21 position before moving into the senior role in 2020. John Gill has gone into Dundalk to work with Vinny Perth so it will be interesting to see how the Champions get used to life without Stephen. There are a number of teams who have made some noteworthy additions during the off-season with the likes of Chris Forrester and Mikey Drennan at St. Patrick's Athletic, Aaron Drinan at Waterford, Jack Byrne at Shamrock Rovers and the return to Kevin O'Connor to Cork City. I truly believe that this will be one of the most exciting seasons in recent memory in both the Premier and First Division. Shelbourne have made some fantastic signings with Ciaran Kilduff returning to the domestic game and Paul Keegan has made the step down to the First Division with Bray Wanderers. The beauty of the First Division is that anyone of the teams could challenge like Wexford Youths did in 2015, and to see Danny Furlong back at Ferrycarrig Park should excite us all. -
