The Toklat River in Denali National Park and Preserve, a braided tributary of the Kantishna River draining the north-facing slopes of the Alaska Range, exemplifies these challenges. Eight decades of localized channel confinement due to installation of a causeway in the 1930’s and over three decades of gravel extraction since the 1980’s have occurred on the Toklat River adjacent to the Denali Park Road. A unique, multi-scalar and temporally diverse dataset records the responses of the river over a 10-km reach. I evaluated trends in short-term sediment storage through LiDAR differencing and analyzed long-term planform change using braiding index, braiding beltwidth and topographic ruggedness derived from aerial photographs. Two reference reaches along comparable adjacent braided rivers, with varying levels of confinement and no gravel extraction, illuminate the relative influence of these human disturbances on channel and planform change. Comparisons of 2009 and 2011 LiDAR-derived DEMs showed a statistically significant volumetric loss of -30,300 ± 27,600 m3 over 4 km of active braidplain within the study reach. Braidplain sediment loss adjacent to the channel-confining Denali Park Road bridge crossing was comparable to that removed biennially through gravel extraction downstream (17,100 m3). Upstream of both the gravel extraction site and the bridge crossing, the braiding beltwidth decreased by 400 m and the braiding index lowered from eight to one between 1988 and 2011. ii The reference reaches did not display such noticeable morphologic adjustments, implying upstream migration of gravel extraction and confinement impacts, which can significantly alter flow character, leading to increased localized stream power, degradation and infrastructure damage. Abstract Sand-bed rivers present unique challenges to accurate measurement of the bedload transport rate using the traditional direct sampling methods of direct traps (for example the Helley-Smith bedload sampler). The two major issues are: 1) over sampling of sand transport caused by “mining” of sand due to the flow disturbance induced by the presence of the sampler and 2) clogging of the mesh bag with sand particles reducing the hydraulic efficiency of the sampler. Indirect measurement methods hold promise in that unlike direct methods, no transport-altering flow disturbance near the bed occurs. The bedform velocimetry method utilizes a measure of the bedform geometry and the speed of bedform translation to estimate the bedload transport through mass balance. The bedform velocimetry method is readily applied for the estimation of bedload transport in large sand-bed rivers so long as prominent bedforms are present and the streamflow discharge is steady for long enough to provide sufficient bedform translation between the successive bathymetric data sets. Bedform velocimetry in small sand- bed rivers is often problematic due to rapid variation within the hydrograph. The bottom-track bias feature of the acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) has been utilized to accurately estimate the virtual velocities of sand-bed rivers. Coupling measurement of the virtual velocity with an accurate determination of the active depth of the streambed sediment movement is another method to measure bedload transport, which will be termed the “virtual velocity” method.

These models are applied to a meandering reach of Yangtze River to investigate secondary flow effects on cohesive sediment deposition, and a preferable submodel is selected based on the flow simulation results. Sediment simulation results indicate that the improved model predictions are in better agreement with the measurements in planar distribution of deposition, as the increased sediment deposits caused by secondary current on the convex bank have been well predicted. Secondary flow effects on the predicted amount of deposition become more obvious during the period when the sediment load is low and velocity redistribution induced by the bed topography is evident. Such effects vary with the settling velocity and critical shear stress for deposition of cohesive sediment. The bed topography effects can be reflected by the secondary flow submodels and play an important role in velocity and sediment deposition predictions.

Abstract Gravel-bed braided rivers, defined by their multi-thread planform and dynamic morphology, are commonly found in proglacial mountainous areas. With little cohesive sediment and a lack of stabilizing vegetation, the dynamic morphology of these rivers is the result of bedload transport processes. Yet, our understanding of the fundamental relationships between channel form and bedload processes in these rivers remains incomplete. For example, the area of the bed actively transporting bedload, known as the active width, is strongly linked to bedload transport rates but these relationships have not been investigated systematically in braided rivers. This research builds on previous research to investigate the relationships between morphology, bedload transport rates, and bed-material mobility using physical models of braided rivers over a range of constant channel-forming discharges and event hydrographs.

    Chapter 3: Parks Highway and West Alaska Range Region Parks Highway and West Alaska Range Region The Parks Highway and West Alaska Range encompasses an area of 4,088,136 acres and is situated in the southeastern and eastern part of the planning area. It encompasses the area, generally described in its north-south orientation, from the Fairbanks area and the northern part of the Tanana Valley State Forest south to the Susitna River and the Denali Highway. In its east-west orientation it extends from the Teklanika and Nenana Rivers on the west to the Tanana River on the east. This large region has a high measure of access, from both the Parks Highway and the Alaska Railroad, and as such it is probably the most accessible of the three regions within the planning area. There are a number of small communities within this area, all of which are situated along the Parks Highway and Alaska Railroad; these include, from north to south, Nenana, Clear, Healy/McKinley Village, and Cantwell. Also included in this region are two boroughs (Denali and Fairbanks North Star). The community of Nenana is situated in the FNS Borough while the Denali Borough, which occupies most of the southern half of the planning region, includes the communities of Cantwell, Healy/McKinley Village, and Anderson (Clear). Two major military reservations exist within the region, including the Fort Wainwright facility in the northeastern part of the region and the Clear Air Force Base, at Anderson. The Denali National Park and Preserve, which is significant for tourism, is located southwest of the region.

This decision also clarifies the Final Finding and Decision dated June 26, 2000, approving land to the DB in the Montana Creek and Yanert areas. This decision provides a detailed description of what was intended to be approved and approves additional land in each area selected by the borough. In order to convey portions of the borough’s selections, the Tanana Basin Area Plan (TBAP) must be amended to change certain plan designations into conveyable classifications. An amendment and land classification order will be processed concurrent with this decision process to reclassify those parcels found appropriate for conveyance to the DB as referenced in the plan amendment.

Analysis of the 40 DEMs and texture maps provides data on the geometry of the morpho- logical active layer and variation in grain size in three dimensions. By normalizing active layer thickness and dividing into 10 sublayers, we show that all grain sizes occur with almost equal frequency in all sublayers.
