Alumni Weekend 2018 Schedule of Events Please note: Times and locations may change between now and Alumni Weekend. We are expecting a larger than usual attendance this year. Some sessions are capped based on presenter preference. These sessions are available on a first-come, first- serve basis. Register as soon as possible to ensure your spot. Because your career success is important to the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, too, the Career & Leadership team is offering in-person, hour-long coaching appointments during Alumni Weekend to address topics, such as: • Career change • Job search • Advancing in place • Resume or LinkedIn profile review • Leadership skills development. We recommend you register as soon as registration opens, as the Center anticipates a large crowd to their new venue. Attendance to the UNC Real Estate Conference is not included in the cost or registration of Alumni Weekend. Staff will be present to answer any questions you may have regarding the schedule, giving to your class campaign, seeing the University, or purchasing UNC Kenan-Flagler gear. Friday 8AM – 5PM | Global Trade, Global Tradeoffs: Winners and Losers in International Commerce Conference sponsored by the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise Location TBD The increasingly open flow of goods and services has fundamentally altered the world economy and global power balances. This conference explores the core questions of the impact of international trade on society, the changing nature of work and economic productivity. 9AM – 1PM | Alumni Golf Outing The Preserve Golf Course Enjoy a golf outing with your classmates, faculty and staff at The Preserve Golf Course. Compete in longest yard and closest to the pin competitions. Join us by 8:30AM to register, grab a bite to eat, and warm-up before the 9AM start. Additional registration required. $100 per player. 9:15AM – 10:30AM | Create Your Future Using Design Thinking with Mary Ryan (MBA@UNC 2014) McColl Building, Room TBD Following your passion sounds wonderful – but, is also quite intimidating. What if you don’t know what your passion is, or if you have one? What if you have no idea where to start? You’re not alone, and there’s hope -- here comes design thinking! Borrowing the creative, iterative thought process used by designers of all kinds, design thinking helps you to start small by following your curiosity to identify possibilities, gather real-life information, and test your options to craft a flexible, creative career plan. Join Mary Ryan, associate director for Career & Leadership Services for this thought-provoking session. 10:45AM – 12PM | Manufacturing Confidence: Using Improv to Be More Authoritative with Greg Hohn McColl Building, Room TBD You have the expertise, now how do you deliver it powerfully and authoritatively? In this interactive session, we will explore principles and techniques from improvisational theater that can help you to become a more authoritative presenter and also to enjoy presenting more. Greg Hohn is a senior lecturer of management and corporate communication. 10:45AM – 12PM | Back on Track: Returning to Work after a Career Break with Katie Dunn Friday McColl Building, Room TBD Returning to work after a career break can be a challenge, but it is doable! If you are engaged in a return-to-work effort or simply starting to think about it, this session will give you valuable insight into the process. Join Katie Dunn, senior associate director, career coaching, and founder of the Back to Business Women’s Conference, to explore: preparing yourself for re-entry by building more recent experience and filling your skill gaps, positively presenting your career break to others, connecting with other professionals, and more. 10:45AM – 12:15PM | Assemble Care Packages for Pediatric Cancer Patients at UNC Children’s Hospital with UNC Kenan-Flagler’s Business Cares Program McColl Building, Room TBD UNC Kenan-Flagler gives back to the community in a variety of ways, but most prominently through its Business Cares Program. Business Cares, announced in 2014, is a strategic and innovative program of philanthropic support for local non-profit organizations. The initiative focuses on three charities dedicated to children’s health including UNC Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill, and Super Cooper’s Little Red Wagon Foundation. Come listen to two representatives from these local organizations and assemble care packages for pediatric cancer patients at UNC Children’s Hospital. 11:30AM – 1:30AM | Grab & Go Lunch with Classmates & Students McColl Building, Room TBD Grab lunch and meet-up with your classmates, or get to know some of our current students from a variety of programs. Feel free to take lunch into the sessions as well. 11:45AM – 1:15PM | The Power Lunch with Ann Cherry McColl Building, Room TBD Business lunches or dinners are a great way to let your professionalism shine – whether you are dining abroad or at a local restaurant. Join Ann Cherry, Founder of Carolina Junior Cotillions as she prepares you to impress your colleagues, prospects, or peers through this three- course etiquette meal. 1:30PM – 2:30PM | Emotionally Intelligent Leadership with Friday Lisa Marshburn McColl Building, Room TBD According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report, emotional intelligence will be one of the top 10 job skills in 2020. Why? Because, people who show an enhanced ability to adapt to change, manage their emotions, and work well with a diverse range of people are often the most valuable players in organizations. Drawing on research in emotional intelligence, as well as real-life experience with proven tech- niques and real people, we will look at emotional intelligence competencies, do an EQ Self-Eval- uation, and learn ways to increase EQ, for you, and your teams. Lisa Marshburn is the associate director of leadership development at UNC Kenan-Flagler. 1:30PM – 3PM | Alumni, Faculty & Staff Basketball Tournament Location TBD Lace up your Air Jordans, put on your sweat bands, and prepare for an entertaining basketball tournament between UNC Kenan-Flagler faculty, staff, and fellow alumni. 1:45PM – 3PM | Health Care Mini-Case Study with Brad Staats McColl Building, Room TBD Join Dr. Brad Staats, associate professor of operations, for a health-care related case that will remind you of your time in the classroom. Participate in this case for a lively discussion with “alumni field experts”. Dr. Staats leads UNC Kenan-Flagler’s Business of Health Care Initiative, a cross-disciplinary initiative targeting some of the biggest health-care challenges of our time. The initiative is by design a pan-university effort that draws upon the wide health sciences strengths across campus including our top-ranked schools of pharmacy, public health, nursing, dentistry, arts and sciences, medicine and business. By building on this collaborative powerhouse of resources and talent through the BOHC Initiative, UNC Kenan-Flagler seeks to distinguish both itself and the University as one of the leading national voices in education, research and thought leadership in the business of health care. 1:45PM – 3PM | What’s Next? Creating Your Vision of Retirement with Elizabeth Wallencheck McColl Building, Room TBD Since 2011 and every day through the end of 2030, 10,000 baby boomers will reach age 65 and are, or will be, contemplating retirement. But like so many other aspects of this generation, they are doing retirement differently! Given the range of personal options, lifestyle choices, and priorities today, there is no one roadmap to retirement except for the one you build yourself. This session will help you explore your personal priorities to start crafting your personal vision of retirement. Friday Elizabeth Wallencheck is the Associate Director of Coaching at UNC Kenan-Flagler.
