James provokes her readers to think theologically. I present evidence from the body of James’s work, including her detective fiction that features the Detective Adam Dalgliesh, as well as her other novels, autobiography, and non-fiction work. I also present a brief history of detective fiction. This history provides the reader with a better understanding of how P.D James is influenced by the detective genre as well as how she stands apart from the genre’s traditions. This dissertation relies on an interview that I conducted with P.D. James in November, 2008. During the interview, I asked James how Christianity has influenced her detective fiction and her responses greatly contribute to this dissertation. However, James’s novels should be interpreted and explored in the manner that they are received by the reader. How the reader receives and responds to the novels, not only how James writes the novels, is what causes her stories to provoke theological thinking. By examining Christian symbolism that is present in setting, character, the Detective Adam Dalgliesh, and plot, this dissertation seeks to assert that James contributes to a theological conversation through her popular detective fiction. iii I, Jo Ann Sharkey, hereby certify that this thesis, which is approximately 40,000 words in length, has been written by me, that it is the record of work carried out by me and that it has not been submitted in any previous application for a higher degree. James 157 BIBLIOGRAPHY 187 vii viii Introduction P.D. James is one of Britain’s most prolific detective novelists. In a career spanning over fifty years, James has written sixteen detective novels, a Christian fable, a literary analysis, an autobiography, and several other works of non-fiction, short stories, and articles. Although James is known for being a confessing member of the Anglican Church, she does not write obvious Christian stories. Only her novel, The Children of Men, published in 1992, is overtly religious.1 Nonetheless, several of the titles of James’s detective novels suggest glimpses or vestiges of Christianity. Original Sin is a doctrine from Christian theology. The title of her novel Death in Holy Orders combines the Christian sacramental practice with the foreshadowing of violence. The term, “Holy Orders” refers to the process of ordination that occurs in many Christian denominations, including the Anglican Church. Devices and Desires is a phrase taken directly from the Book of Common Prayer. To unreligious readers, this phrase may be less recognizable as a Christian reference; however, the title would be familiar to anyone in the Anglican Church or to anyone who reads the Book of Common Prayer.2 By utilizing Christian words and phrases in her titles, James insinuates to her readers that her novels will address theological themes. Since her first novel in 1962, James has become increasingly more concerned with theological matters.

Natty Moore The value and credibility of ‘human progress’ as a framework through which to evaluate the past and look towards the future is called into question in various dystopian narratives of the twentieth century. Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (1932), P. D. James’s The Children of Men (1992) and Maggie Gee’s The Ice People (1998) all challenge ideas of human progress through dystopic representations of English society in various states of decline and stagnation.     ISSN 1751-8229 Volume Eleven, Number Two On Anamorphic Adaptations and the Children of Men Gregory Wolmart, Drexel University, United States Abstract In this article, I expand upon Slavoj Zižek’s “anamorphic” reading of Alfonso Cuarón’s Children of Men (2006). In this reading, Zižek distinguishes between the film’s ostensible narrative structure, the “foreground,” as he calls it, and the “background,” wherein the social and spiritual dissolution endemic to Cuaron’s dystopian England draws the viewer into a recognition of the dire conditions plaguing the post-9/11, post-Iraq invasion, neoliberal world. The foreground plots the conventional trajectory of the main character Theo from ordinary, disaffected man to self-sacrificing hero, one whose martyrdom might pave the way for a new era of regeneration. According to Zižek, in this context the foreground merely entertains, while propagating some well-worn clichés about heroic individualism as demonstrated through Hollywood’s generic conventions of an action- adventure/political thriller/science-fiction film. Zižek contends that these conventions are essential to the revelation of the film’s progressive politics, as “the fate of the individual hero is the prism through which … [one] see[s] the background even more sharply.” Zižek’s framing of Theo merely as a “prism” limits our understanding of the film by not taking into account its status as an adaptation of P.D. James’ The Children of Men (1992). This article offers such an account by interpreting the differences between the film and its literary source as one informed by the transition from Cold War to post-9/11 neoliberal conceptions of identity and politics.

While this success of anti-hero narratives in television serials starting from late 1990s raises the question of “quality television”, developing audience measurement models of networks make alternative narratives based on anti-heroes become widespread on the U.S. television industry. This thesis examines the development of the anti-hero on the U.S. television by focusing on the protagonists of pay-cable serials The Sopranos (1999-2007) and Dexter (2006-2013), basic cable serials The Shield (2002-2008) and Mad Men (2007-2015), and video-on-demand serials House of Cards (2013- ) and Hand of God (2014- ). In brief, this thesis argues that the use of anti-hero narratives in television is directly related to the narrowcasting strategy of networks and their target audience groups, shaping a template for growing networks and newly formed distribution services to enhance the brand of their corporations. In return, the anti-hero narratives push the boundaries of conventional hero in television with the protagonists becoming morally less tolerable and more complex, introducing diversity to television serials and paving the way even for mainstream broadcast networks to develop serials based on such protagonists.

I argue in this paper that the Hungarian body part reflexive maga ‘himself’ and its more complex counterpart önmaga ‘himself, his own self’ represent a non-isolated pattern that adds a new dimension to this typology. Nominal modification of a highly grammaticalized body part re- flexive may reactivate the dormant underlying possessive struc- ture, thereby granting the more complex reflexive variant an in- creased level of referentiality and syntactic freedom. Introduction According to an established typology, complex reflexives are expected to be local and relatively well-behaved from a binding theoretical perspective, whereas long distance reflexives tend to be monomorphemic (see Faltz 1985, Pica 1987 and subsequent work, as well as Dalrymple 1993 and Bresnan 2001 in the LFG literature). Polymorphemic reflexives, however, are not uniform as they may show different types of morphological complexity. In particular, body part reflexives, which owe their complexity to their historical origin as possessive structures, are often grammatical outside of the local domain in which their antecedent is located.
