It is a member of the scabergroup, and is distinguished by its dorsal body pattern of 5-6 bold crossbandsand large, keeled dorsal scales. The taxonomic status of S. storeyae is re-evaluated.The scaber group now includes four species, all from central Cuba, Isla de Juventud, and the Archipielago de los Canarreos:S. oliveri, S. richardi,S. scaber, and S. storeyae. RESUMEN.- Se describe una nueva especie de salamanquita,Sphaerodactylus richardi, que habita en la region cerca de Playa Gir6n, Matanzas,Cuba. Se distingue del resto de las especies del Grupo scaber por los patrones de 5-6 bandas transversalesy escamas dorsales grande y aquilladas. El estado taxonomico de S. storeyae se reevaluado.El grupo scaber inclue quatro especies, todo de Cuba central, Isla de Juventud, y el Archipielago de los Canarreos:S. oliveri, S. richardi,S. scaber, and S. storeyae. Ctenosaura Defensor (Cope, 1866)
Ctenosaura defensor (Cope, 1866). The Yucatecan Spiny-tailed Iguana, a regional endemic in the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula, is distributed in the Tabascan Plains and Marshes, Karstic Hills and Plains of Campeche, and Yucatecan Karstic Plains regions in the states of Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Yucatán (Lee, 1996; Calderón-Mandujano and Mora-Tembre, 2004), at elevations from near “sea level to 100 m” (Köhler, 2008). In the original description by Cope (1866), the type locality was given as “Yucatán,” but Smith and Taylor (1950: 352) restricted it to “Chichén Itzá, Yucatán, Mexico.” This lizard has been reported to live on trees with hollow limbs, into which they retreat when approached (Lee, 1996), and individuals also can be found in holes in limestone rocks (Köhler, 2002). Lee (1996: 204) indicated that this species lives “mainly in the xeric thorn forests of the northwestern portion of the Yucatán Peninsula, although they are also found in the tropical evergreen forests of northern Campeche.” This colorful individual was found in low thorn forest 5 km N of Sinanché, in the municipality of Sinanché, in northern coastal Yucatán. Wilson et al. (2013a) determined its EVS as 15, placing it in the lower portion of the high vulnerability category. Its conservation status has been assessed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, and as endangered (P) by SEMARNAT. ' © Javier A. Through an extensive review of information on Cuban herpetofauna, including protected area management plans, we present the first comprehensive inventory of introduced amphibians and reptiles in the Cuban archipelago. We classify species as Invasive, Established Non-invasive, Not Established, and Transported. We document the arrival of 26 species, five amphibians and 21 reptiles, in more than 35 different introduction events. Of the 26 species, we identify 11 species (42.3%), one amphibian and 10 reptiles, as established, with nine of them being invasive: Lithobates catesbeianus, Caiman crocodilus, Hemidactylus mabouia, H. angulatus, H. frenatus, Gonatodes albogularis, Sphaerodactylus argus, Gymnophthalmus underwoodi, and Indotyphlops braminus. We present the introduced range of each of the 26 species in the Cuban archipelago as well as the other Caribbean islands and document historical records, the population sources, dispersal pathways, introduction events, current status of distribution, and impacts. -

File Ref: EP 86/25/01 (19) LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL BRIEF Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance (Chapter 586) PROTECTION OF ENDANGERED SPECIES OF ANIMALS AND PLANTS ORDINANCE (AMENDMENT OF SCHEDULES 1 AND 3) ORDER 2021 INTRODUCTION On 5 February 2021, the Secretary for the Environment, pursuant to section 48 of the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance (Cap. 586) (the Ordinance), made the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance (Amendment of Schedules 1 and 3) Order 2021 (the Amendment Order), as set out at Annex A, to amend Schedules 1 and 3 to the Ordinance. 2. The purpose of the Amendment Order is to give effect to the amendments made at the 18th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP18) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) held in 2019 in Switzerland. The Amendment Order also aims to give effect to changes made to the list of endangered species in Appendix III to CITES since the last amendments to the Ordinance in 2018. JUSTIFICATIONS 3. Hong Kong has been implementing CITES through local legislation1 since 1976. The Ordinance stipulates that a licence to be issued in advance by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) is required for the import, introduction from the sea, export, re-export or possession of specimens of a scheduled species, whether alive, dead, its parts or derivatives, unless otherwise provided. Stanley Rand (1932-2005) Stan Rand (left) with his former graduate advisor, Ernest Williams (right) at Soroa, Cuba in 1983. iii Preface On the first weekend of October in 2009, 125 anole biologists traveled from eight countries to Harvard University’s Museum of Comparative Zoology to attend the 6th Anolis Symposium. It had been 10 years since the previous symposium, and a reunion was long past due. In 2008, as we began to consider how to proceed with such an endeavor, a fortunate thing happened: the Herpetology Department at the MCZ renovated its library and teaching space – the famous lair of the late pater anolis, Ernest Williams. The library needed a namesake, and Ernest was under strong consideration (after all, he had been instrumental in filling its shelves!). After a brief period of friendly deliberation, it was decided that the library would be dedicated to Williams, and that the occasion would be the commencement of the 6th Anolis Symposium, held at the Museum of Comparative Zoology. Anole biology has changed considerably in the last decade, and it’s been for the better! First and foremost, the field has grown explosively. -

Etimología: José (por mi padre), Orlando (nombre italiano), Hilarión (personaje humorístico de la zarzuela La Verbena de la Paloma), Angel de Jesús (consagrado al Angel de la Guarda). Viví primero en la casa donde nací en la calle Neptuno, luego en el Vedado, en una casa de huéspedes de mi tío Pedro mientras mi padre (entonces empleado del Chase Manhattan Bank), ahorraba para comprar una casa que en definitiva, es en la que vivo actualmente a partir de los seis años. (Calle 60 No.1706 entre 17 y 19 Marianao 13 Playa). De niño, mis padres me llevaban con frecuencia a los jardines del Capitolio que eventualmente se convirtió en mi centro de trabajo, donde con doce colegas en 1960, fundamos el Museo Cubano de Ciencias Naturales, y posteriormente en 1962 surgió la Academia de Ciencias de Cuba. A los 7 años aprendí a leer y escribir en el Colegio Alba. A partir del tercer grado hasta mi graduación de Bachiller en Ciencias en 1948, en el colegio de la Salle del Vedado. Durante esa época, jugaba en el barrio chapas, quimbumbia, corcho, taco, pelota y ping pong. Después de graduado, estudié un año en La Habana Business Academy donde aprendí mecanografía y algo de inglés. -

DOI: 10.31611/ch.67 Abstract To facilitate biological study we define “Caribbean Islands” as a biogeographic region that includes the An- tilles, the Bahamas, and islands bordering Central and South America separated from mainland areas by at least 20 meters of water depth. The advantages of this definition are that it captures nearly all islands with endemic species and with at least some Antillean-derived species, and still circumscribes a region of high biodiversity and biogeographic significance. We argue that Caribbean islands, in this expanded sense, are also cohesive from a conservation standpoint in that they share high human population densities and sim- ilar conservation threats. A disadvantage of this definition, strictly applied, is that it includes some islands (e.g., Trinidad) that have mostly mainland species.
