Of all the luxury real estate for sale in the economic downturn, one property in Northern Virginia's horse country sticks out for its owners' magnum-size struggle to find a buyer.

The Oasis Winery in Fauquier County, one of Virginia's oldest, has been on the market since May 2007 and is now selling for $4.75 million. Such is the mystique of Dirgham Salahi, 82, with his wife, wants to sell his stake of the 108- Oasis that basketball star Shaquille acre Oasis Winery and pay off debt. His son wants to keep his share. O'Neal, an apparent oenophile, and ( ) a group of investors were said to be on the verge of buying it last year. But infighting TOOLBOX between members of the owning family has bedeviled Resize Print attempts to sell the vineyard, winery, tasting room and E-mail Reprints four-bedroom French country-style home that sit on 108 acres.

On one side are co-owners Dirgham Salahi, 82, an Israeli immigrant, and his wife, Corinne Salahi, 63, who want to unload their stake and pay off debt.

On the other is their polo-playing son, , 39, also a co-owner, and his wife, Michaele, a former Washington Redskins cheerleader who is now a Richmond lobbyist. The son, a member of the Virginia Tourism Authority, is hurrying to team up with investors to buy what he views as his heritage before someone else steps in.

The family tensions are exposed in a civil suit in Fauquier County Circuit Court in which the parents allege that their son has interfered with the winery's sale and falsely advertised on the Internet that Oasis was closed. The parents also sought to evict him and his wife from an apartment on the property. The son responded in court documents with allegations that his parents' attorney assaulted him and a request that he be removed from the case. (The attorney, Thomas Brownell of the firm Holland & Knight, has denied those allegations in court papers.)

Both sides said in interviews that the lawsuit is dormant; Tareq Salahi said he expects a formal settlement soon without any monetary payments. But it's unclear who will buy the winery in this economic climate.

"My heart and soul is in Oasis. I am worried that someone will come in and try to buy it," said Tareq Salahi, who grew up planting vines with his father. "If you told me 10 years ago this was going to happen, I wouldn't have believed it. I would have told you that's the life of [the television show] 'Falcon Crest.' I am also concerned about the economy. Clearly, people who have money to invest in a project like this, there are less of them."

Corinne Salahi, who is founder and director of the Montessori School of Alexandria, said in an interview that the fight with her son is depressing and that she blames him for

amassing unmanageable debt through enterprises related to the winery. The mother said she had hoped that after her son graduated from college he would join the family business, "learn the ropes and gradually take over, not create more work for me and his father." She said the family stress has caused her to develop a heart problem. "It's just depressing," she said. Blood is the most important thing. I used to call him my best harvest. I still do."

Among Virginia winemakers, Oasis, founded in 1977, has been known for its sparkling blended wines. In the 1990s it was also known for hosting large events that prompted battles with neighbors and Fauquier officials over noise and traffic. Oasis's tasting room boasts multiple wine awards, a framed Pittsburgh Penguins hockey stick -- Oasis was the team's official wine -- and photographs of former Virginia governor Gerald L. Baliles (D) touring the facilities.

But Oasis is not growing grapes this year and offers only a limited number of chardonnays and cabernet sauvignons for sale at its site and at stores, according to Tareq Salahi. It's still open for tastings, and the son said that if he gains control of the winery, he hopes to bottle 10,000 gallons from its 2007 vintage.

The winery's reputation as one of the state's more muscular producers and tourism pioneers was diminished by its large debt, according to the Salahis, and accounts of the family's spats and real estate troubles. (The son said most of a $1 million debt was paid off in September, but the mother said heavy debt remains.)

The elder Salahis said their son ran up too many expenses with tourism initiatives that could not be paid back. Tareq Salahi said the winery lost revenue because it was spending too much money in lawyers' fees -- $2 million -- battling Fauquier officials over zoning restrictions of the winery events.

The wine operation was almost sold late last year. The three separate SLIDESHOW Previous Next bidders were Tareq Salahi; his friend and real estate agent Casey Margenau; and a -based limited liability corporation that the younger Salahi said was linked to O'Neal, now a center for the Phoenix Suns. Perry Rogers, O'Neal's agent, did not return phone calls seeking comment.

According to Tareq Salahi, O'Neal and his partners backed out of the deal with the elder Salahis after the

investors learned they would not Dirgham Salahi, 82, with his wife, wants to sell his stake of the 108- obtain the Oasis trademark or acre Oasis Winery and pay off debt. His son wants to keep his share. ( ) wine.

Margenau, who had introduced Tareq Salahi to TOOLBOX Michaele at Cafe Milano in Georgetown, emerged as Resize Print the potential lead buyer, offering to lease the property E-mail Reprints back to his friend. But he backed out, too.

"When I looked at the disarray of the property and vines, and looked at the financials, I said, 'Tareq, you can't make this work. You couldn't pay the rent. You'd be defaulting to me, and we wouldn't be friends,' " Margenau said.

In June, Tareq Salahi met with another potential investor from Hong Kong. The elder Salahis' real estate agent, Lynn Wiley, showed up for the meeting. In a lawsuit filed in August in Fauquier County Circuit Court, Tareq Salahi alleged that Wiley defamed and embarrassed him in front of the investor by saying he "did not know what he was talking about." The Hong Kong investor, Tareq Salahi said, subsequently bowed out. The son is seeking $3.6 million in damages.

In court papers, Wiley responded that her comments were "insufficient" to support a defamation claim. To this day, Tareq Salahi is wistful about O'Neal's visit to the winery last year.

"I would still love to do a deal with him, and it could be a better deal," Tareq Salahi said. "He came to Virginia because of a personal interest. I showed him my prospectus, but his businesspeople were going to deal directly with [my mother]. He's a very pleasant gentleman. He's articulate about wines, and they weren't looking to buy a vineyard and winery [just] to say they owned one. He loved the big reds."

Tareq Salahi said he is considering teaming up with investors in Northern Virginia or Los Angeles to buy his parents' share for $3 million. He wants to start growing grapes again, renovate the tasting rooms and transform the property's residence into a bed-and- breakfast, but he worries about the credit crisis. "Honestly, and candidly, we are 80 percent there with the investors in Northern Virginia," he said, declining to identify them. "Their hang-ups are the economy, their liquidity. And they ask, 'Will the mother still be

there?' "

So the Salahis wait for a sale. One sunny October day, the property, which normally would have been busy with tourists and harvesting, was silent. As the parents walked past empty Italian concrete vats, they pointed to some barrels of old wine. "It's just vinegar now," Dirgham Salahi said.

As for the son, he has high hopes for the Salahi saga. He said he has met twice with a TV producer about using the dispute as the basis for a movie or miniseries.

Family [ edit ]

Salahi's father, Dirgham Salahi, immigrated to the United States from , British Mandate of Palestine in the 1940s. His mother, Corinne, is from Belgium. Dirgham was educated as a petroleum geologist and worked in the Middle East and U.S. He retired and settled in Virginia, where he became owner of an estate farm, which he subsequently turned into one of the first Virginia Farm Wineries. Corinne Salahi is the founder and director of the Montessori School of Alexandria, Virginia.[6][7]

Education [ edit ]

Salahi attended primary school at Ascension Academy in Alexandria and high school at the Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, Virginia where he graduated in 1987. He graduated from the University of California, Davis in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in oenology and business management.[8]

Personal life [ edit ]

Salahi met Michaele Holt at a 2000 baby shower thrown in McLean, Virginia by real estate developer N. Casey Margenau and his wife Molly.[7][9][10][11] They married in 2003 at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington, D.C. The reception was held at the Salahi family winery and was prepared by 46 chefs, hosted in a 36,000-square-foot (3,300 m2) tent, and culminated with a thirty-minute fireworks display and an eight-foot wedding cake. The guest list included 1,836 guests, including Supreme Court Justice and former U.S. Ambassador to Ireland Margaret Heckler and numerous high-profile US State Department, CIA, US Senate, US Congressional and other high-profile diplomatic guests, including at the wedding US Supreme Court Justice Kennedy to quip that he needed to issue "subpoenas" to the bride and groom.[4][7][9][12]

On September 13, 2011, Salahi reported Michaele missing and perhaps kidnapped after Michaele had phoned him to say that she was on her way to her mother's house, but, according to her mother, had not arrived.[13] She was located soon afterward when law enforcement authorities discovered she had run off with Neal Schon, guitarist for the rock band Journey, and had not wanted Salahi to know where she was.[13] Michaele had met Schon earlier and had remained in a very close friendship with him.[13]

On September 16, 2011, Salahi filed for divorce from Michaele on the grounds of adultery and abandonment or separation.[14] Tareq refiled the case shortly thereafter with amendments, but

Michaele also filed for divorce on December 15, 2011, citing the grounds of not paying for her lavish lifestyle including hair costs exceeding $3,000 each time and constructive desertion.[15] On December 22, 2011, Tareq responded to Michaele's divorce suit with a new filing for divorce on the grounds of adultery, desertion and constructive desertion.[15]

On August 20, 2012, Judge Dennis L. Hupp granted a final divorce decree to the Salahis following a contentious settlement proceeding.[16] Hupp also entered a dismissal order for a $50 million personal injury [17] lawsuit that Tareq Salahi had filed against the entertainment company, Journey, Schon and Sonata.[16] Hupp placed the settlement, including the divorce decree, under seal.

In 2010 NBC Universal/Bravo reality television show cast Salahi on The Real Housewives of D.C.[18] He went on to appear on shows and specials on HBO, E!, History and numerous outlets.[19] also featured on NBC Saturday Live in a spoof[20] and appeared on CBS Late Show with David Letterman.

Oasis Winery [ edit ]

Salahi is a long-time vintner and winery owner. He has released numerous red/white/blush wines and champagnes during a 30+ year career. His 1999 champagne was named in the “Top 10 Best Champagne and Sparkling Wines in the World” by Wine Enthusiast magazine, one of the world’s most respected wine publications.[22]

Tareq Salahi has reopened Oasis Winery as a private custom crush operation. In early 2016 he released two new wines titled “Real Housewinos” and had the name trademark protected.

In 1977, the Salahi family founded the Oasis Winery[23] on their estate farm in Hume, Virginia. They planted some of the first , Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines in Virginia, establishing the fifth winery in Virginia. The Salahis developed the business into a 15,000-case- a-year operation, and, according to court papers, grossed as much as $1 million in annual revenue in some years. The vineyard's Meritage line won Gold Medals at the 1994 and 1996 world wine championships. In 1998, Oasis launched a Cuvee "Celebration" sparkling wine which also garnered top awards.[7][9][23][24]

In 1994, they formed Oasis Vineyard Inc. and appointed Tareq managing director. Tareq eventually gained a 5% minority interest in the vineyard. According to court papers, Tareq also began operating a new business out of the vineyard, Oasis Enterprises, which was developed to raise ancillary income as a venue for polo events and other functions such as weddings. Oasis Enterprises included a limousine operation, wine country tours, and an events-and-catering

business. A dispute arose amongst the Salahi family regarding business matters between Oasis Vineyard and Oasis Enterprises, and the winery started losing money. A lawsuit was filed, in which the Salahi family alleged, according to court filings, that assets were misdirected to Oasis Enterprises from the winery and that Tareq was misrepresenting himself as the President of the winery.[7][25] Tareq fought the charges and made counter allegations against his parents and their lawyer. He began to seek investors to buy the property from his parents, but no deal was ever reached. The winery ceased operations, and the lawsuit was dropped without resolution.[25]

On October 6, 2010, Dirgham Salahi died and Tareq issued a statement that read "In recent days, we have come together as a family."[26]

Oasis Vineyard filed for bankruptcy in 2008,[27] with its winery assets auctioned in late 2011.[28] Oasis Enterprises filed for bankruptcy in 2009.[27][29]

In mid-2011 Tareq's wife, Michaele Salahi was sued by two different parties for fraudulently taking payment for wine tours that were never delivered.[30] On April 23, 2012, the Attorney General of Virginia, II, filed suit against Tareqs wife, Michaele Salahi for violating the Virginia Consumer Protection Act for failing to conduct tours that were purchased, failing to provide refunds for canceled tours and other companies as official partners that had relationship with her business.[31] Soon afterwards, Tareq announced that he would run against Cucinelli in the 2013 election for .[32]

In May 2013, the land and buildings of the former Oasis Winery was sold at auction for $1.1 million in order to satisfy creditors, marking the end of the Salahi family involvement with Oasis Winery. The buyer was undisclosed but it was later revealed that Tareq purchased back the assets and started wine productions again. Tareq's mother Corinne was the sole beneficial owner of the property at the time of sale.[33]

In February 2014, Tareq Salahi was required to obtain a permit to continue renting out his home to short term visitors on .[34]

Celebration Retreat [ edit ]

Tareq Salahi opened up one of his homes as an Airbnb accommodation partner in 2013 and guests frequent the Shenandoah Wine Country home called “Celebration Retreat”.

When the local government of Warren County, Virginia, attempted to stop him from renting out his private property, Salahi sought help from both the Virginia court system and general assembly. House Bill (HB812) is still in committee at the legislature.[35]

Public service [ edit ]

Tareq Salahi sat on the board of the American Task Force on Palestine,[36] and in 2002 Tareq was named National Man of the Year by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in recognition of his fundraising achievements.[37]

Virginia Governor appointed Tareq in 2000 to a three-year term on the Virginia Wine Board.[38] At the conclusion of that term, Virginia Governor nominated Tareq as chairman of the Virginia Wine Tourism Office. Tareq was one of 15 board members of the Virginia Tourism Corporation,[39] a "board that shapes Virginia's tourism policy", appointed by

Gov. in 2006. Kaine told MSNBC:

Tareq had served on the state's wine board under both Gov. Gilmore and Gov. Warner, and when his term on the wine board finished, he and the tourism board wanted him on that board because he's a great promoter—you won't be surprised to hear me say that.

During his time in office the Virginia Wineway, Loudoun Wine Trail, Blue Ridge Wineway and Virginia Wineries Alliance were created, attracting, according to a USDA study, 980,000 wine tourists to the state, of which 336,000 visited Piedmont wineries.[9][40][41][42]

After the White House gatecrashing incident in 2009, Virginia Senate Majority Leader wrote a letter to Gov. Kaine asking for Salahi's removal from the board: "Mr. Salahi's recent outrageous behavior and personal promotion in regards to trespassing in the White House is not the face we need for Virginia tourism…I would appreciate you taking swift action to avoid any further negative situations."[43] Salahi resigned from the Virginia Tourism Board on December 7, 2009.[44][45]

Polo [ edit ]

Salahi is an experienced horseman who started show jumping at age eight and competed in numerous international Grand Prix events before taking up polo at 16. He was a regular competitor on the U.S. National Team and his Oasis squad won two U.S. Polo Association National Arena Titles in 1997 and 1998.[24]

Salahi was involved with sponsoring the Courage Cup in 2006, a polo charity event to raise funds for urban youth to experience equestrian activities. A dispute over control, vendor payment, and use of proceeds from the Courage Cup reportedly led the Salahis to found the America's Polo Cup in 2007.[46][47][48] Allegations of misuse of proceeds from the new charitable event arose,[49][50] and in December 2009 the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services opened an investigation into the annual event.[51][52]

The 2010 America's Polo Cup match took place on June 12 on the in Washington, D.C., with teams announced as United States and India. The advertised ticket price for the event was $95 per person. The event had an attendance of about 250 people, with food from Louisiana Kitchen and PF Chang's China Bistro. Reports of the event stated that the players who represented India were actually of Pakistani origin and were from Florida. A spokesman for the Embassy of India stated that neither the Embassy nor the government of India had any association with the event.[53][54][55] The event's website and the US team's uniforms identified an Indian company, Kingfisher Beer, as a sponsor. A spokesperson for Kingfisher denied that the company had sponsored the event.[53] Yashpal Singh, the president and chief executive of Mendocino Brewing Company, Kingfisher's parent company, stated,

We are not sponsoring this event and have informed the people managing this event of that. ... We have sent legal notices to this effect, and he keeps on advertising us as a sponsor. I don't know what world he's living in.[53]

The America's Polo Cup filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in October 2010.[29][56]

White House party-crashing [ edit ] Main article: 2009 U.S. state dinner security breaches

In November 2009, Tareq and Michaele Salahi entered a state dinner despite lacking an invitation.[3][57][58] Michaele Salahi is a member of Bravo's The Real Housewives of D.C., and the show filmed their preparations for the dinner and followed the couple to the White House.[59][60][61] Tim Burke, who directed MTV Blaggers!, in which a group of friends gatecrash high-profile events and parties, lied and said he was contacted by Salahi a week before the White House incident. He falsely claimed Salahi asked him for advice on tricking his way into a black-tie event. Later when the United States Secret Service interviewed Mr. Burke, he admitted he was untruthful when faced with criminal charges for potential perjury to a United States Federal agent. He was discredited and MTV later terminated Mr. Burkes contract with MTV.[62]

Following the event Salahi was requested by the U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee to appear at a hearing on December 3, 2009, but he refused to attend.[63] On December 9, 2009, the Committee on Homeland Security voted 26 to 3 to subpoena Tareq Salahi, and 27 to 2 to subpoena Michaele, for a hearing on the alleged gatecrash scheduled for January 20, 2010. The Salahis invoked the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution at the hearing.[64][65] The Salahis' attorney, Stephen Best, described the Congressional inquest as "...not a hearing looking for information. This was an opportunity for a public flogging."[66]

Journey for the Cure Foundation [ edit ]

In 2009, Salahi's ex-wife Michaele was listed as the director of the "Journey for the Cure Foundation" connected to the rock band Journey. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' Office of Consumer Affairs issued a press release that cautioned consumers that "Journey for the Cure Foundation, 14141 Hume Road, Hume, Virginia, has solicited contributions from Virginia citizens for allegedly charitable purposes. However, as of May 13, 2009, this organization had not registered with or been granted the appropriate exempt status by the Commissioner as required by law".[67][68]

On February 28, 2012, the Virginia Attorney General's office announced a settlement with Salahi, where he would pay a fine for the violations. According to the attorney general:

"Journey for the Cure claimed on its Internet web site that "proudly, 100% of our financing goes directly to find the cure and we have no paid staff." Based on bank records obtained through the Virginia Office of Consumer Affairs' (OCA) investigation, the attorney general alleged that only 33% of JCF's expenditures in 2007, and 0.6% of its expenditures in 2008 went directly to disease prevention- related charities. Significant amounts were instead spent on fund raising overhead"

The attorney general's office also alleged that the charity filed inaccurate financial statement with state regulators, and solicited in Virginia from 2004 to 2009 without obtaining the proper registration. It also failed to maintain proper fiscal records and failed to provide the state with

required financial information when it stopped soliciting contributions there in 2010.

Salahi's wife at the time was accused of personally violating the solicitation of contributions law by signing a notice that said the foundation was registered with the Office of Consumer Affairs when it was not, and signing a registration statement that made false claims about the foundation's financial information and history.[69]

In the settlement agreement, Tareq Salahi agreed to pay on behalf of his wife $2,500 in civil penalties and $7,500 to compensate Virginia for attorney fees, and the Journey for the Cure organization will pay $25,000 in civil penalties.[70]

Reality television [ edit ]

The Salahis appeared in 2010 on the Bravo reality television show The Real Housewives of D.C.. The couple clashed with other featured cast members, and the conflicts continued after the show aired.[71][72] The production was not flattering to the Salahis, and included coverage of the White House gate crashing in detail.[5][73] Critics have noted that the show's producers edited the material in ways that exaggerated the truth.[73]

2013 Virginia gubernatorial election [ edit ] Main article: Virginia gubernatorial election, 2013

On April 25, 2012, Salahi announced his candidacy as a Republican for Governor of Virginia in the 2013 Virginia gubernatorial election.[32] When making his announcement, Salahi stated that his candidacy would avenge a lawsuit that Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II, who was hoping to become the Republican gubernatorial nominee, had recently brought against him. He added that the lawsuit had made him realize the amount of taxpayer money that politicians waste.[32] On December 4, 2012, Salahi announced the establishment of the website "Crashthevote.com" to promote his candidacy.[74] The website stated that his platform included: Promoting the Commonwealth of Virginia; Promoting the Military, both our troops and defense workers; Increasing Jobs; Pro-Business; Pro-Tourism; Pro-Agriculture; Less Tax; Kill the Car Tax; Pro Eco-Friendly Energy Production.[75]

On January 14, 2013, Salahi announced that he would run for governor of Virginia as an independent.[76] He stated that he had been informed that his refusal in December to sign a pledge of support for all 2013 Republican candidates[77] could disqualify him from the Republican nomination process. He explained that he could not "agree with anything that Cuccinelli believes in."[76]

Salahi failed to submit the necessary signatures to the Virginia State Board of Elections by the June 11, 2013, deadline and did not appear on the ballot as an independent. He transitioned his run into a write-in campaign and said he would pursue a congressional seat if he didn't win the governorship.[78][79] Salahi was also scheduled to have a film document his campaign by Campbell Media Group, but the production company faced legal allegations for targeting and scamming its film subjects.[80]

Salahi was one of two significant declared write-in candidates for Governor, along with John Parmele, Jr., a Navy retiree. All write-in candidates received 11,087 votes, 0.49% of the total

2014 Congressional election [ edit ] Main article: United States House of Representatives elections in Virginia, 2014

In December 2013, Salahi announced that he was running in the Republican primary for Virginia's 10th congressional district in the 2014 elections, to succeed , the retiring Republican incumbent.[81] However, he withdrew from the 10th's Republican primary and switched to the Independent Greens in March 2014 to run for Virginia's 7th congressional district seat currently held by .[82] Salahi attempted to collect 1,000 signatures to get on the ballot.[83] In June 2014, Salahi submitted 2,051 signatures to the Virginia State Board of Elections,[84] but only 480 of them were valid and he will not appear on the ballot.[84]

Wine Tour and Travel Businesses [ edit ]

As of 2015, Salahi owns several Virginia-based businesses, including Connoisseur Traveler[85] and Blue Ridge Wine Way, the latter of which made news for owing $34,000 in unpaid bills to a limo company as of January 2013.[86] He also rents out his home on Airbnb.[87]

Hotels At Sea [ edit ]

In November 2015, Salahi announced his engagement to Northern Virginia socialite and his business partner Lisa Spoden, who also serves as CEO of their joint venture, Hotels at Sea (Salahi serves as Chairman),[88] which operates as a cruise line for companies looking to charter cruise ships. Hotels at Sea augments major sporting and other special events worldwide where there is a lack of hotel space; docking their cruise ships at the events full-time. Virginia Politics Tareq Salahi says he’s running for Virginia governor

By Laura Vozzella and Anita Kumar April 25, 2012

This post has been updated.

He crashed the White House. Why not the governor’s mansion? Tareq Salahi says he’s running for governor of Virginia.

Salahi told The Post Wednesday that he will run, as a Republican, to avenge a recent lawsuit brought against him by another GOP gubernatorial hopeful: Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II.

“Its not part of reality TV. It’s not a stunt,’’ Salahi said in an interview. “It’s real.”

News of his political aspirations were first reported by TMZ, which until now has had more

reason than political reporters to be plugged into the polo socialite’s doings.

The development comes just days after Cuccinelli announced that he was suing Salahi over his winery tour business.

Salahi said the lawsuit made him realize just how much taxpayer money politicians waste. And he decided someone else should run for the state’s top job.

“I woke up thinking ‘someone should do this,’’’ he said. “And I thought ‘Wait a minute. I’m someone!’ ’’

When it was filed, Cuccinelli’s suit seemed like further proof that Salahi’s life had fallen to pieces since November 2009, when he managed to sashay past White House security with his wife Michaele on his arm and into a State Dinner.

Then the wife ran away with an ’80s rocker. Tareq Salahi was fined in connection with a charity. And Cuccinelli alleged that Salahi’s wine tour business canceled tours, failed to make promised stops and refused to provide refunds.

Salahi, 42, who lives outside Front Royal and now tends to a smaller vineyard, said that he is returning to his true loves — politics, horses and wine. He said he has some policy proposals, but isn’t ready to reveal them.

“I’m starting all over.’’ he said. “This is going back to the old me.’’

Salahi, who describes himself as a moderate Republican, was appointed to a pair of state boards — the Virginia Tourism Authority and the Virginia Wine Growers Advisory Board - - by Republican and Democratic governors, James S. Gilmore (R), Mark R. Warner (D), now a U.S. senator, and Timothy M. Kaine (D), now a candidate for U.S. Senate.

Now that Salahi has his eye on the governorship, hmmm, the plot thickens. Are jilted Virginia wine-country tourists really a top concern for the commonwealth’s top law- enforcement official? Do they rank up there with the climate scientist, exposed nipples and purportedly exported District rats that seem to dominate Cuccinelli’s portfolio?

“This is exactly the type of leadership we don’t want in Virginia,’’ he said. “He’s grandstanding. He chooses a small family business. He’s spending tends of thousands of dollars on things that are not warranted.”

Or is Cuccinelli, himself a Republican candidate for governor, merely gunning for a rival?

Cuccinelli stood by the lawsuit.

“Protecting Virginia consumers from fraud is a high priority for me as attorney general, and I take that duty very seriously,” he said via e-mail. “It’s unfortunate that this individual doesn’t take these complaints against his company as seriously as we do. ... We’re constantly alerting the public to potential scams so they can avoid them. That’s not seeking publicity. That’s a public service.”

Lt. Gov. (R), who also is seeking the Republican nomination, responded to a request for comment by way of spokeswoman Ibbie Hedrick.

“The lieutenant governor is focused on creating jobs for Virginia families, not the Salahi- Cuccinelli affair,” she said.

A spokesman for the all-but-announced Democrat in the race, Terry McAuliffe, declined to comment.

Salahi said he knows McAuliffe well and has met both Bolling and Cuccinelli.

Del. David B. Albo (R-Fairfax), who has known Salahi for more than a decade and even made an appearance on “The Real Housewives of D.C.” said his friend told him a while back that he planned to run.

“My friend, Tareq, is an eccentric guy,’’ he said. But Albo said he is unlikely to support Salahi. “I don’t see how anyone without a $1 million can win.”

Salahi said he announced word of his political run via Facebook and Twitter. He said he has already formed an exploratory committee and has staff lined up— but declined to name any except lawyer Charles Roberts from Prince William County.

“I’m taking this very seriously,’’ he said.

Barre/Scranton in 1989.[8] She then moved to the Washington, D.C., area getting a job at the make-up counter at Nordstroms at the Tysons Corner Mall in McLean, Virginia, for most of the 1990s.[9] In 2001 she was a make-up artist on the set of the "Lady Bird" episode of the PBS documentary series American Experience.[10]

Schon has claimed to be a former Washington Redskins cheerleader; she has also claimed to have been featured in numerous television spots, was the face of Virginia.org's Wine Getaways ad campaign, and has also claimed to have been a featured model in various magazines.[4][11][12] However, the Washington Redskins have publicly stated that she has never worked for them.[13] She did perform with the Washington Redskins cheerleaders during the September 20, 2009, Redskins-St. Louis Rams game at a halftime event honoring the team's pom-pom alumni, although other cheerleaders questioned her dancing abilities.[14]

In Florida, a polo magazine editor said the Salahis submitted pictures for a December 2008 article that identified Schon, then Michaele Salahi, as a "former Miss USA." No record exists of her winning that beauty crown, pageant officials said.[15] In 2010, Michaele was one of the featured housewives on Bravo's The Real Housewives of D.C.[16]

Gatecrashing and celebrity run-ins [ edit ] Main article: 2009 U.S. state dinner security breaches

In June 2005, while he was a Senator, had posed for a photo with the Salahis and the Black Eyed Peas at the 12th annual Rock the Vote Awards Dinner at the National Building Museum.[17] The Salahis also gatecrashed the September 26, 2009, dinner for the Congressional Black Caucus, where the couple posed for photos with Rep. Chuck Rangel and before being asked to leave by security. On the December 2, 2009, Today Show they claimed they were given tickets to that event by the Gardner Law Group, but caucus spokeswoman Muriel Cooper refuted that claim.[18]

"The first the White House security detail knew of their blunder in allowing them into [the November 24, 2009, state dinner] was when the couple posted photographs from the dinner on their Facebook page."[19] Invited guest , anchor of the NBC Nightly News, observed the Salahis' SUV being turned down from the East Gate entrance. After that, he saw the Salahis and crew leave their vehicle and walk to the White House. They entered through two security checkpoints; only one of them checked for photo ID.[20] The White House on November 27 released photos of the couple posing with President Obama, Vice President , Chief of Staff , and other celebrities in attendance.[21] Secret Service director Mark Sullivan issued a statement on November 27 saying that the Secret Service was "deeply concerned and embarrassed by the circumstances surrounding the State Dinner". Sullivan's statement also pointed out that "the preliminary findings of our internal investigation have determined established protocols were not followed at an initial checkpoint, verifying that two individuals were on the guest list."[21]

Representative Peter T. King, Republican of New York, wrote a letter to the House Committee on Homeland Security requesting an investigation into this incident.[21] The Secret Service is also considering criminal charges against the Salahis.[22] Michaele Salahi was requested by the House Homeland Security Committee to appear at a hearing on December 3, 2009, but she

refused to attend.[23]

Other controversies [ edit ]

The Salahis had numerous fights with their neighbors, stemming from the expansion of the winery and disputes over live music. In 2005, these disputes, caused the Fauquier County Zoning Office to limit event activities to 12 wine tastings per year. That action prompted Michaele Salahi to register as a lobbyist in Richmond and her efforts succeed in passing House Bill 2643, which removed the power of county zoning authorities to regulate "customary or usual" vineyard activities, such as wine dinners or weddings.[7][24]

Michaele and Tareq Salahi operated the charity "Journey for the Cure Foundation."[25] CBS News reported that public records for the Foundation showed that the charity had spent in 2008 over 58 percent of its donations on travel, fundraising and meals and less than 4 percent ($710) on actual charitable expenses.[25] Tareq Salahi told the Washington Post in 2008 that he had raised $250,000 for the charity.[15]

Travis Frantz, president of the 28-property Mosby's Overlook Estates homeowners association in Front Royal, put a lien on the Salahi's home because they hadn't paid dues since the first year they moved in. The Salahis and HOA reached a settlement in mediation, but the HOA has yet to be paid.[26]

In 2009, CNN reported that plaintiffs in 16 civil suits had named as defendants the Salahis or organizations that the Salahis had operated.[27] The 2008 America's Polo Cup resulted in vendors suing the Polo Cup or the Salahis for at least $500,000 in unpaid bills.[15][27] Sheila Johnson, the co-founder of Black Entertainment Television and proprietor of Salamander Resort & Spa in Middleburg, Virginia, claimed in Loudoun County General District Court in a filing that the Salahis owed her catering business more than $300,000 for a 2008 America's Polo Cup event; a Hume-based caterer, Jerome Farmer, told Washington Life that the Salahis still owed him $30,000 for catering services for the 2009 America's Polo Cup; and Robb Levin told Time magazine that he had won a $15,000 judgment against the Salahis, but had yet to collect a penny.[4][11][28]

On September 13, 2011, Tareq reported Michaele missing and perhaps kidnapped after Michaele had phoned him to say that she was on her way to her mother's house, but, according to her mother, had not arrived.[29] She was located soon afterwards when law enforcement authorities discovered that she had run off with Neal Schon, guitarist for the rock band Journey and had not wanted Tareq to know where she was.[29] Michaele had met Schon earlier and had remained in a very close friendship with him.[29]

On September 16, 2011, Tareq filed for divorce from Michaele on the grounds of adultery and abandonment or separation.[30] Tareq dropped the case shortly thereafter, but Michaele filed for divorce on December 15, 2011, citing the grounds of cruelty and constructive desertion.[31] On December 22, 2011, Tareq responded to Michaele's divorce suit with a new filing for divorce on the grounds of adultery, desertion and constructive desertion.[31]

On August 20, 2012, Judge Dennis L. Hupp granted a final divorce decree to the Salahis following a contentious settlement proceeding.[32] Hupp also entered a dismissal order for a $50 million personal injury lawsuit that Tareq Salahi had filed against the entertainment company, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michaele_Salahi#cite_note-24[11/2/2016 9:27:18 AM] Michaele Salahi - Wikipedia

Journey, Schon and Sonata.[32] Hupp placed the settlement, including the divorce decree, under seal, thus preventing anyone except the attorneys, their clients and Hupp from seeing the details.[32] An anonymous source close to the situation subsequently stated that Schon had agreed to pay Tareq $12,000 plus Tareq's mortgage payments over the next year to settle the case.[33]

Engagement and marriage to Neal Schon [ edit ]

On October 14, 2012, Schon proposed to Michaele onstage during a charity concert at the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore, Maryland, offering her an oval 11.42 carat diamond engagement ring.[34] The marriage would be Michaele's second and Schon's fifth.[35]

The couple married on December 15, 2013, in a pay-per-view ($14.95 for three hours) wedding that was broadcast live from the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, California.[36] On December 1, 2015, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors agreed to a settlement that would pay Neal and Michaele $290,000 in response to a lawsuit that had accused the city-county government of improperly permitting the wedding's organizers to increase their fees after learning of the pay-per-view arrangements.[37]

In popular culture [ edit ]

In the opening segment of the December 5, 2009, episode of Saturday Night Live, Kristen Wiig portrayed Michaele as an interloper who got on stage at a Barack Obama speech in Allentown, Pennsylvania and posed for various pictures behind the President with her husband, Secret Service agents, and Vice President Joe Biden. At one point they asked the President to stop his speech and snap a group shot of all of them.[38]

The incident [ edit ]

Motivation [ edit ]

At the time of the incident, Michaele Salahi was being filmed for Bravo 's The Real Housewives of D.C.[1][2][3][4][5] Camera crews for the show filmed the Salahis' preparation for the dinner, including Michaele's hair being done at a salon and her dress being properly styled, before and going to the White House in a limousine with her husband Tareq. Cameras captured the couple being questioned at the gate by a person with a clipboard, who instructed them to proceed to the next gate when she could not verify them on her list.[6][7][8] Sky News reported: "The Salahis hope to build a public profile in the US after appearing

in the filming for the reality TV show The Real Housewives of Washington, D.C., though their contribution was never aired."[9][10] The series began airing on Bravo in August 2010.[11]

Preparation [ edit ]

Tim Burke, director of the gatecrashing reality show MTV Blaggers!, said that Tareq Salahi contacted him about a week before the White House incident for advice on tricking one's way into a black-tie event.[12]

Michaele Salahi spent seven hours in the Erwin Gomez Salon in Georgetown to prepare for the state dinner, accompanied by a film crew from The Real Housewives. In contrast to the more sedate black or navy blue evening gowns worn by most female guests, Salahi wore a gold embroidered red ensemble, to which the press widely referred as a sari (more precisely, a lehenga-style sari and choli).[13] Michaele was recorded on film saying that she had conferred with White House social secretary Desirée Rogers as to whether wearing this attire would be appropriate, and that "they thought the sari was a great idea."[14][15] Aparajita Mukherjee of the Times of India later implied that Salahi probably bought the ensemble in the Janpath market of New Delhi during a July 2009 visit to invite the Indian polo team to participate in the 2010 America's Polo Cup .[16] Michaele Salahi also wore expensive David Yurman jewelry to the event; reportedly, a Washington-area store lent her the bracelets and rings, in total worth $30,000, and needed three attempts to retrieve them.[17][18] In February 2010, Salahi told an Australian television interviewer that her attire would be auctioned to raise funds for Haitian earthquake relief. [19] It was sold at auction on October 2, 2010 for $7,000.[20]

Breach and attendance [ edit ]

The Salahis entered the state dinner in honor of India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh without an invitation, although their camera crew was unable to follow them. [21][22][23][24] They passed through two security checkpoints, one of which checked them for photo identification.[25] Robin Givhan of the Washington Post surmised that the Salahis were allowed to enter because they "looked the part" and, in her words, stepped through a "cultural blind spot."[26] The Washington Post also quoted an anonymous official as having said that "the Salahis were allowed inside in violation of agency policies by an officer outside the front gate who apparently was persuaded by the couple's manner and insistence as well as the pressure of keeping lines moving on a rainy evening."[27] The White House social secretary, Desirée Rogers, later told media that a member of her staff was at the main entrance to handle arriving guests not on the guest list, but that the Secret Service did not alert her staff to either the Salahis or Carlos Allen.[28] subsequently reported that Rogers had posted an employee of her office only at the East Portico checkpoint, but not at the first, outer checkpoint, a departure from past practice.[29]

The Washington Post's Roxanne Roberts recognized the Salahis and subsequently wrote,

The minute I realized they were not on the list, I asked a White House staffer to verify their names and explain why they were not on the list. I told the same thing to another staffer a few minutes later. This was before the Salahis went through the receiving with the president, and they could have been pulled aside and quietly questioned.[30]

Roberts' suspicions were apparently not acted upon; according to media reports, "the first the White House security detail knew of their blunder in allowing the Salahis into Tuesday's event was when the couple posted photographs from the dinner on their Facebook page."[31] The White House on November 27 released its own photographs of the couple posing with President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden , and Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel .[32]

Invited guest Brian Williams , anchor of the NBC Nightly News, observed the Salahis' SUV being turned down from the East Gate entrance of the White House that evening, after which the Salahis and crew left their vehicle and walked toward the White House.[25]

After returning from the White House, the Salahis posted their photographs from the dinner on Michaele's Facebook page. [33] This led to the discovery that the Salahis were not on the list of invited guests for the dinner, and should not have been admitted. Subsequent reports and reviews of videotape revealed Mr. Allen as a third gatecrasher on that evening.

Aftermath [ edit ]

Formal investigation [ edit ]

On December 1, 2009, The Washington Post reported that the Secret Service found e-mail exchanges between the Salahis and Michele S. Jones , special assistant to the Secretary of Defense and the Pentagon - based liaison to the White House; Jones specifically told the Salahis not to come because she had no authority to grant admittance.[34] That morning, the Salahis appeared on the Today show on NBC, interviewed by Matt Lauer .[35] When Lauer asked the couple whether they were invited to the dinner, Michaele stated, "...we were invited, not crashers and there isn't anyone that would have the audacity or the poor behavior to do that." Michaele also claimed victimization: "Everything we worked for, Matt -- for me 44 years just destroyed." The Salahis also asserted that they had received no payment in return for granting the interview.[35][36]

The Salahis were requested by the U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee to appear at a hearing on December 3, 2009, but they refused to attend.[37] Following this, Representative Bennie Thompson, Democrat of Mississippi and chairman of the Committee, defeated Republican efforts to subpoena White House social secretary Desirée Rogers and to hold the Secret Service officially responsible for the Salahis' unauthorized entry.[38] He also began a formal process to subpoena the Salahis. On December 9, 2009, the Committee on Homeland Security voted 26 to 3 to subpoena Tareq Salahi, and 27 to 2 to subpoena Michaele, for a hearing on the gatecrash that was scheduled for January 20, 2010.

The Salahis' attorney advised that the Salahis would invoke the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution,[39][40] and they did so at the hearing, declining to answer questions 32 times.[41][42][43] Despite this invocation of the Fifth Amendment, Tareq Salahi had informed the Las Vegas Sun that he and his wife "want the story of The White House cover-up about their invitation to be told."[44] Tareq also told the Loudoun Times-Mirror prior to the hearings, "It will truly be a historic moment...Not since the 1950s has Congress held hearings of such a historic nature."[45] However, the Salahis' attorney, Stephen Best, described the Congressional inquest as "not a hearing looking for information. This was an opportunity for a public flogging."[46]

White House Principal Deputy Counsel Daniel J. Meltzer stated in a letter on 23 December 2009 to the House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security,

We have found no evidence the Salahis were included on any White House access list or guest list. The Salahis were not on the lists for the State Dinner, the Arrival Ceremony, or any other event scheduled for November 24. Indeed there is no record of the Salahis in the White House visitor access system since the beginning of the Obama Administration. Moreover, we have found no evidence that the Salahis called the White House and asked about the proper dress code for the State Dinner.[14]

On January 8, 2010, media reported that a federal grand jury had been convened to investigate the apparent security breach by the Salahis. Erwin Gomez and Peggy Ioakim of the Erwin Gomez Salon and Spa were subpoenaed to testify before the grand jury.[47][48][49][50] Politico reported that the subpoena does not mention the Salahis, but "says that the grand jury is investigating a possible violation of 18 USC 1001 , a federal statute that covers lying to a government official."[51] In addition, White House Usher Rear Admiral Stephen Rochon testified voluntarily to the grand jury, the first White House official to do so.[52]

In an interview by Robin Roberts on ABC's Good Morning America television program broadcast January 10, 2010,[53] Carlos Allen's attorney called Allen a "cooperating witness" and stated that Allen is not a subject of the grand jury investigation.[54][55][56]

Reactions [ edit ]

Indian security officials expressed shock at the apparent breach of security. An anonymous Indian official told the The Economic Times, part of the Times of India media group,

We are glad that it happened in the US. If such a security breach had happened out here in Hyderabad House, or even Vigyan Bhavan , we would have never heard the end of it and heads would have rolled. How such a breach in the most important official residence in the world happened is something all of us are very keen to know.[57]

Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan issued a statement on November 27 saying that the Secret Service was "deeply concerned and embarrassed by the circumstances surrounding the State Dinner". Sullivan's statement also pointed out that "the preliminary findings of our internal investigation have determined established protocols were not followed at an initial checkpoint, verifying that two individuals were on the guest list."[32] Newsweek magazine further reported, "The White House staff member whose job was to supervise the guest list for state dinners and clear invitees into the events says she was stripped of most of her responsibilities earlier this year, prompting her to resign last June."[58]

Representative Peter T. King , Republican of New York, wrote a letter to the House Committee on Homeland Security requesting an investigation into this incident.[32] The Secret Service is also considering criminal charges against the Salahis.[59]

Secret Service Director Sullivan put three identified employees on administrative leave. Sullivan testified at the December 3 hearing that the White House and Secret Service collaboratively planned security protocols for the state dinner.[60]

In a televised interview on the CBS program 60 Minutes that aired December 13, 2009, President Obama termed the gatecrash a "screw-up", expressed anger that it had taken place, and vowed that such incidents would not occur again.[61]

The incident also resulted in criticism of the White House for an alleged lack of transparency due to the Administration's unwillingness to allow the White House social secretary to testify before Congress.[62][63][64]

Security was tightened both at the White House and at outside events involving the President, with one commentator referring to the new White House security regime as "so tight it operated like a beast on steroids."[65] Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) complained in March 2010 about members of Congress having to walk a block in the rain to enter the White House:

The member of Congress, like today in the rain, has to go down a block and then go through security there with double the number of guards and then come up and go through security

again and go through guards again...not because Secret Service messed up or the armed guards that are now doubled in number, but because somebody in the White House staff screwed up...Now they’re deciding to punish members of Congress and law-abiding citizens that normally just get in.[66]

At the state of the union address in the Capitol January 27, 2010, security was reportedly more stringent than before, with multiple checks of identification. An anonymous U.S. Senate official was quoted in the New York Times as saying,

Nobody, the Secret Service, the Capitol Police, wants another one of those...They don’t want some chucklehead out on the House floor with a camera, then putting it on YouTube that he sneaked in.[67]

Security was also tightened for the May 19, 2010, state dinner in honor of Mexican President Felipe Calderón, to the extent that the wife of the Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs was turned away for lack of proper identification.[68]

Repercussions for the Salahis [ edit ]

The widely publicized incident created a huge wave of interest in the personal lives and business dealings of Tareq and Michaele Salahi. Within days, their family winery was deluged with angry phone calls condemning their actions.[69] Within a week of the incident, Tareq Salahi resigned from the Virginia Tourism Board at the request of Governor Tim Kaine and other state officials.[70][71][72][73] Multiple sponsors withdrew support from the Salahis' "America's Polo Cup " event, although those withdrawals were not always acknowledged in the event's publicity materials.[74][75][76]

By the end of December 2009, the Washington Post alone had assigned more than a dozen reporters to investigate them.[77] By the end of June 2010, according to the Washington Post's ombudsman , the paper had extended its coverage of the couple to a new total of 110 articles by more than thirty reporters and contributors, ascribing its readers' interest to "the unique audaciousness and astonishing self-absorption of the Salahis."[78] Tareq Salahi remarked in an interview that the White House should apologize for ruining his reputation and for the way he has been treated by the public and members of the media.[79]

Loss of prestige [ edit ]

A USA Today /Gallup Poll conducted December 11–13, 2009 of 1,025 adults in the United States, revealed that 70% of respondents considered the Salahis "losers" politically as a result of their White House breach, versus 16% who considered them "winners". Of the 13 choices offered in the poll, the Salahis yielded the lowest score.[80]

At a January 20, 2010, congressional hearing on the gatecrash, the Salahis were subjected to what the Washington Post called a "blistering bipartisan tongue-lashing."[41]

Social criticism [ edit ]

Ellis Henican , a columnist for Newsday, called the Salahis "low-class, high-gloss wannabes", and said the matter amounted to "a new low" for reality television and the depths people will resort to for fame.[81] The New York Daily News criticized Bravo for "settling for [the] bottom of [the] social ladder" in its casting policy for the Real Housewives program. [82]

The New York Times characterized the gatecrash as a gross breach of social protocol in the nation's capital, thus:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_U.S._state_dinner_security_breaches[11/2/2016 8:56:51 AM] 2009 U.S. state dinner security breaches - Wikipedia

...when Ms. Salahi strutted onto the South Lawn in that bright red lehenga , she and her husband breached far more than a secure perimeter.

They also trampled countless protocols that are the social, business and networking bedrock of official Washington. Essentially, the couple used the mixed martial arts approach to upward mobility in a town that still cherishes the Marquess of Queensberry rules .[83]

However, Maureen Dowd , a New York Times columnist, used the incident to cast aspersions on Washington society, writing,

...even the outrage over the fakers is fake. The capital has turned up its nose at the tacky trompe l’oeil Virginia horse-country socialites: a faux Redskins cheerleader and a faux successful businessman auditioning for a “reality” show by feigning a White House invitation...Yet Washington has always been a town full of poseurs , arrivistes, fame-seekers, cheaters and camera hogs.[84]

Cultural references [ edit ]

An episode of Law & Order, titled "Crashers ", was partially inspired by the incident.[citation needed]

The Salahi surname became a synonym of "gate crashing ".[85][86]

The phrase "Salahi route" has additionally been used to refer to refusal to pay for services rendered or goods delivered, as in

Some go the Salahi route, stiffing working folks on their bills (tradesmen, lawyers, beauty salon operators, purveyors of services), crashing parties.[87]

In the opening segment of the December 5, 2009 , episode of Saturday Night Live, Tareq was portrayed by Bobby Moynihan and Michaele by Kristen Wiig as interlopers who got on stage at a Barack Obama speech in Allentown, Pennsylvania , and posed for various pictures behind the President with Secret Service special agents and Vice-President Joe Biden . At one point in the skit they ask the President to stop his speech and snap a group shot of all of them.[88][89]

The monologue segment of the Late Show with David Letterman parodied the Salahis.[90][91] NBC's Washington, D.C., affiliate posted on its website parody photographs of well-known American events into which images of the Salahis had been edited.[92]

TV Squad listed this incident as one of the top four "reality scandals" of 2009.[93] The Huffington Post ranked the incident fourth on its list of "Rubbernecking's Top Ten Pop Culture Moments of 2009".[94] Addicting Games, a subsidiary of MTV Networks, created an online computer game, White House Party Crashers, in which the gamer is challenged, "Use your most devious skills to get past White House security."[95]

Political satirist Dave Barry included the following mention of the incident in his summary of major "lowlights" of 2009:

... a Washington couple, Tareq and Michaele Salahi, penetrate heavy security and enter the White House, a feat that Joe Biden has yet to manage. As details of the incident emerge, an

embarrassed Secret Service is forced to admit that not only did the couple crash a state dinner, but they also met and shook hands with the president, and they "may have served briefly in the Cabinet."[96]

The Washington Post's "Reliable Source" gossip column chose Tareq and Michaele Salahi as its Persons of the Year for 2009, saying,

...the Salahis took what could have been an enjoyably seedy little horse-country melodrama and catapulted it into the gossip stratosphere with one fateful night at the White House that exposed the dark secrets of our decade's major growth industries: national security and reality television.[97]
