These workshops on natural language theory and technology are organized by the Parlevink Reasearch Project, a language theory and technology project of the Centre of Telematics and Information Technology (CTIT) of the University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands. For each workshop proceedings are published containing the papers that were presented. See next page for an overview of the previous TWLT workshops. TWLT 15 has been organized by a program committee consisting of Anton Nijholt (chair, The Nether- lands), Niels Ole Bernsen (Denmark), Philip Brey (The Netherlands), James Lester (USA), Stephen Mat- suba (Canada), Pierre Nugues (France) and Oliviero Stock (Italy). The workshop is endorsed by SIGDIAL and is organized in the context of the U-Wish project of the Dutch national Telematics Institute. TWLT 15, Interactions in Virtual Worlds, is a 3-day workshop on interactions in virtual reality (VR) en- vironments. Contributions were invited on theoretical, empirical, computational, experimental, anthropo- logical or philosophical approaches to VR environments. In this workshop the emphasis is on VR environ- ments that provide means for interacting with the objects in the environment, with embedded information sources and services (possibly represented as agents) or with other users and visitors of the environment. In recent years the computer science and the cognitive ergonomics communities have discovered and are exploring the possibilities of VR in user interfaces. In order to visualize available information and to provide users access to this information, virtual environments have been built such that users can find and explore information, communicate with other users and communicate with objects and agents in the virtual worlds. In this workshop new forms of interactivity are explored. Topics are, amongst others, the role of agent technology and of speech and language in virtual environments. How can we navigate in VR using speech and language, how can we model multimodal access to such environments, how can we communicate with other humans and with artificial agents in the VR environment, etc. A workshop is the concerted action of many people. We are grateful to the authors and the organisations they represent, for their efforts and contributions. In addition we would like to mention here the people whose efforts have been less visible during the workshop proper, but whose contribution was evidently of crucial importance. It was held in Trento on April 15-16, 20021. The workshop follows the successful International Workshop on Computational Humour held in Enschede in 1996 and is an initiative of HAHAcronym 2 (IST-2000-30039),the first European project about computational humour. The aims of the workshop were bringing together research results in the area of computational humour, with an emphasis on the computational interpretation and generation of verbal humour. Scientifically, the field is a young area of investigation that poses some very challenging questions: what ’intelligence’ is required for the skillful use of humour? How can modelling humour contribute to modelling intelligence ? What role can humour play in making systems look more intelligent and enjoyable? A number of research results on humour can suggest a computational treatment of the topic.

(African proverb) Mapping Ambiance: Abstract – English “Urban space is not a predefined and auto-regulated research object but it gives space to a wide range of approaches that contribute to define it” (Grosjean M., Thibaud, J.-P. 2001). Researches investigating ambiance look at the urban space under different point of views. The topic is studied by different disciplines, such as aesthetics, architecture, urban studies and urban ecology, anthropology, ethnography, cultural geography, sociology and spatial semiology. A Jean-Paul Thibaud (2011) affirms, ambiance attunes every day’s urban atmosphere and has the ambition to be the bridge between sensory, spatial and social dimension composing the urban environment. The aim of the dissertation research is to highlight common approaches (both theoretical and practical) that different disciplines use to study ambiance in order to foster the interdisciplinary collaboration.

    Navigating Digitally-Mediated Theatre with Intermediaturgy By John Battye A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Performance Studies Department of Drama University of Alberta © John Battye, 2020 ii Abstract Traditional dramaturgical practice does not adequately account for how emergent digital media can interact with elements of performance in intermedial theatre, leading to an art form that is critically and compositionally inaccessible. When live and not-live components interact on stage, how does that reflect a contemporary notion of the body? And how does theatre that grapples with this interaction speak to the digital beyond the stage? This thesis explores the impact of media on notions of the body, identity, and space through a new genre of theatre, called digitally-mediated theatre (DMT). The increasing reliance on media platforms as a form of social exchange and digital media saturation have created a society that is integrated, infested, and extended by the media. DMT artists criticize this media relationship and encourage mindful awareness of its influence by taking the self-same digital media technology, embedding it in performance. A selection of DMT performances will be analyzed using an intermediaturgical process to break down the mechanisms that are used to play with notions of body, identity, and space. As intermediaturgy is concerned with human perception and navigation of mediated environments, this will allow for an analytical framework that will be resistant to obsolescence as digital media technology continues to evolve. By demonstrating this method of analysis, the aim of this thesis is to help clarify a field at odds with itself, demystify the artists from their auteur status, and increase the accessibility of the form to new and emerging artists and students of the arts.
