Mathes, Jr. ABSTRACT This report, prepared in cooperation with the West Virginia Office of Federal-State Relations (now the Office of Economic and Community Development), lists in tabular form 435 drainage areas for basins within the Guyandotte River basin of West Virginia. Drainage areas are compiled for sites at the mouths of all streams having drainage areas of approx­ imately five square miles or greater, for sites at U.S. Geological Survey gaging stations (past and present), and for other miscellaneous sites. Drainage areas are summed in a downstream direction to provide areas for main channel sites. The site or reference point of each basin can be located by stream miles measured upstream from the mouth of each stream, by county, by quadrangle, and by latitude and longitude. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This report was prepared in cooperation with the West Virginia Office of Federal-State Relations (now the Office of Economic and Community Development). Assistance in the form of equipment (an electronic digitizer) was provided by the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey. INTRODUCTION The Guyandotte River basin is located in southwestern West Virginia. (See fig. 1.) The Guyandotte River drains approximately 1680 square miles of dissected Appalachian plateau before flowing into the Ohio River at. Huntington, West Virginia. Drainage areas in this report were determined for approximately 400 smaller basins within the Guyandotte River basin. The drainage divides for these basins were outlined at the topographic divides on U.S. Geological Survey 71/2-minute topographic maps. Most basins with areas greater than five square miles were outlined as well as many basins with areas less than five square miles. Drainage areas were measured by use of electronic digitizing equip- ment supplemented by hand planimeter. Drainage areas were adjusted to agree with the areas of 71/2 minute quadrilaterals as found in Smithsonian Geographical Tables. Individual areas were rounded for reporting to two significant digits for areas of less than one square mile, three signi- ficant digits for areas of from one square mile to less than one thousand square miles, and four significant digits for areas greater than or equal to 1000 square miles. Stream mileages were measured upstream from stream mouths to all basin reference points. Stream mileages were determined by measuring, with a map wheel, stream lengths from the mouth of each stream to each basin reference point on that stream. Stream mileages were rounded to the nearest tenth of a mile in all cases. The latitude and longitude of each basin reference point were also measured. The latitude and longitude of each basin reference point were determined to the nearest second by use of a scaled rule. All information contained in this report is listed in tabular form in downstream order. Basin reference points are located by intersecting tributaries, counties, map quadrangles, and latitude and longitude. 3 H. ACTION: Proposed rule. SUMMARY: We, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), propose to designate critical habitat for the Big Sandy crayfish (Cambarus callainus) and the Guyandotte River crayfish (C. veteranus) under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (Act). In total, approximately 582 stream kilometers (skm) (362 stream miles (smi)) in Martin and Pike Counties, Kentucky; Buchanan, Dickenson, and Wise Counties, Virginia; and McDowell, Mingo, and Wayne Counties, West Virginia, are proposed as critical habitat for the Big Sandy crayfish. Approximately 135 skm (84 smi) in Logan and Wyoming Counties, West Virginia, are proposed as critical habitat for the Guyandotte River crayfish. If we finalize this rule as proposed, it would extend the Act’s protections to these species’ critical habitat. We also announce the availability of a draft economic analysis of the proposed designation of critical habitat for these species. In West Virginia, there are 10 native species of turtles, 9 of which are aquatic. Most of these aquatic turtles feed on carrion and dead plant matter, in the water and essentially "clean" our water systems. Turtles are long-lived animals with sensitive life stages that can serve as both long-term and short-term bioindicators of environmental health. With the increase in commercial trade, habitat fragmentation, degradation, destruction, there has been a marked decline in turtle species.

Events that took place before recorded history are lost to time. With the advent of recorded history, some events played out on an international stage, as in the mid-1700s during the war between the French and English for control of the Ohio Valley region. Others took place on a national stage, as during the Removal years of the early 1800s, or during the events surrounding the looting and grave desecration at Slack Farm in Union County in the late 1980s. Over these millennia, a variety of American Indian groups have contributed their stories to Kentucky’s historical narrative. Some names are familiar ones; others are not. Some groups have deep historical roots in the state; others are relative newcomers. All have contributed and are contributing to Kentucky's American Indian history. The bulk of Kentucky’s American Indian history is written within the Commonwealth’s rich archaeological record: thousands of camps, villages, and town sites; caves and rockshelters; and earthen and stone mounds and geometric earthworks. After the mid-eighteenth century arrival of Europeans in the state, part of Kentucky’s American Indian history can be found in the newcomers’ journals, diaries, letters, and maps, although the native voices are more difficult to hear.
