ABSTRACT This thesis introduces the reader to rock music in Durban from 1963 to 1985, tracing the development of rock in Durban from rock'n'roll to hard core punk. Although the thesis is historically orientated, it also endeavours to show the relationship of rock music in Durban to three central themes, viz: the relationship of rock in Durban to the socio-political realities of apartheid in South Africa; the role of women in local rock, and the identity crisis experienced by white, English-speaking South Africans.

Over the centuries, dancers and dance makers have shaped and changed ballet, taking its technique to fresh and exciting places. In every generation a handful of visionaries can inspire us to see ballet through a new lens, and in turn inspire others to create. Volt is a celebration of this process. I first saw Wayne McGregor’s work in the early 2000s. The piece, brainstate, featured Deborah Bull, then a principal of The Royal Ballet, and it was riveting. Wayne went on to create works for the world’s most prestigious ballet companies.

They are the ultimate masters in modern psychedelic rock music and the audience reacted with uni>ed head banging. Andrew Stockdale geed up the crowd furthermore by stating, “It’s been seven years since we have played Riverstage and now we get to play with Lenny Kravitz”. Their fastidious but short set held the audiences hearts and minds with their classic song, Joker and the Thief. Dolores O’Riordan’s recent bout of food poisoning and the postponing of the Cranberries Sydney show meant that they were determined to give Brisbane an outstanding live performance, and that they did.
