The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR)
The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) Background The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is a Washington D.C.-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with 28 independent chapters around the country. Since its founding in 1994, CAIR has sought to position itself as the leading American Muslim civil rights organization. In recent years, much of its activity has centered on responding to the proliferation of anti-Muslim incidents and sentiment expressed nationwide. However, at times the organization’s positions and work have been shadowed by early connections between some of CAIR’s top leadership and organizations that are or were affiliated with HamasHamasHamasHamas. Hamas has long been associated with seeking the complete elimination of the State of Israel and with suicide bombings that have targeted civilians, and is designated a foreign terrorist organization (FTO) by the United States. Hamas is also viewed by the EU as a global terrorist organization.1 In addition, over the years many in CAIR’s leadership have expressed, and in a number of cases continue to express, anti-Zionist rhetoric. This has included statements that demonize American supporters of Israel who believe that a connection with Israel is an essential part of their Jewish identity. CAIR also frequently partners with vehemently anti-Zionist and anti-Israel groups like JewishJewishJewishJewish V VVVoiceoiceoiceoice for forforfor P PPPeaceeaceeaceeace (JVP) and American Muslims for Palestine, many of whose members employ extreme rhetoric and questionable tactics to demonize and disrupt pro-Israel activity. CAIR and Israel 1 / 14 Although its main organizational mission is upholding the rights of Muslims in the United States, CAIR also comments on international issues, with a particular focus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. -

Abstract Title of Thesis: RACE ACROSS BORDERS: RACE AND TRANSNATIONALISM IN THE FIRST SYRIAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY, 1890-1930 Zeinab Emad Abrahim, Master of Arts, 2013 Thesis Directed By: Professor, Madeline Zilfi Department of History This research explores the transnational nature of the citizenship campaign amongst the first Syrian Americans, by analyzing the communication between Syrians in the United States with Syrians in the Middle East, primarily Jurji Zaydan, a Middle-Eastern anthropologist and literary figure. The goal is to demonstrate that while Syrian Americans negotiated their racial identity in the United States in order to attain the right to naturalize, they did so within a transnational framework. Placing the Syrian citizenship struggle in a larger context brings to light many issues regarding national and racial identity in both the United States and the Middle East during the turn of the twentieth century. Fahrenthold Center for Middle Eastern Studies, University of California, Berkeley, California, USA E-mail: [email protected] Abstract For half a million ‘Syrian’ Ottoman subjects living outside the empire, the First World War initiated a massive political rift with Istanbul. Beginning in 1916, Syrian and Lebanese emigrants from both North and South America sought to enlist, recruit, and conscript immigrant men into the militaries of the Entente. Employing press items, correspondence, and memoirs written by émigré recruiters during the war, this article reconstructs the transnational networks that facilitated the voluntary enlistment of an estimated 10,000 Syrian emigrants into the armies of the Entente, particularly the United States Army after 1917. As Ottoman nationals, many Syrian recruits used this as a practical means of obtaining American citizen- ship and shedding their legal ties to Istanbul. Émigré recruiters folded their military service into broader goals for ‘Syrian’ and ‘Lebanese’ national liberation under the auspices of American political support. Musselman, B.A. Mentor: Chris Seiple, Ph.D. ABSTRACT In 1998, the U.S. government made the promotion of religious freedom official policy. This policy has often been met with skepticism and hostility from foreign governments and publics. In the Muslim-majority world, it is commonly seen as an attempt to discredit traditional cultural norms and/or Islamic law, as covert support for American missionary activity, and/or as cultural imperialism. American Muslims could play a key role in changing this perception. To date, the American Muslim community has not become deeply invested in the movement for international religious freedom, but their notable absence has not been treated in any substantial length. This thesis draws on the disciplines of public policy, political science, anthropology, and religious studies to explore this absence, in the process attempting to clarify how the immigrant Muslim American community understands religious freedom. It reviews the exegetical study of Islamic sources in relation to human rights and democracy by three leading American Muslim intellectuals—Abdulaziz Sachedina, M.A. Muqtedar Khan, and Khaled Abou El Fadl—and positions their ideas within the dual contexts of the movement for international religious freedom movement and the domestic political incorporation of the Muslim American community. -

ABSTRACT This study examined the extent to which the use of cooperative learning in the Islamic Saudi Academy (ISA) in Washington, DC had an impact on the reading performance of grade four and five students in the standard reading curriculum. The ISA is a bilingual English-Arabic school with dual American and Saudi Arabian curricula. The Arabic language arts (including reading) and religion curricula follow the Saudi Arabian education system, while the remaining curricula such as math and science reflect the American education system. The study used a quasi-experimental design. Four groups of ISA male students participated in the study: two fourth grade classes, and two fifth grade classes. The researcher developed and administered pre- and post-measures for reading performance, which designed vocabulary, reading comprehension, and fluency. -
