Lewis, an Irish-born scholar and author of more than forty books, was born on November 29, 1898, in Belfast. Education was very important to Lewis’ family. His father was a lawyer, and his mother had a college degree at a time when it was not common for women. Lewis began reading when he was only three years old and began writing stories when he was five. In 1916, he won a scholarship to University College. He served in World War I and then studied at Oxford, where he became a fellow and tutor in 1925. He kept this position until 1954, when he became a professor of Medieval and Renaissance English at the University of Cambridge. He wrote many novels, including the popular The Screwtape Letters and his seven-volume series, Chronicles of Narnia. He also wrote an autobiography of his early life, Surprised by Joy, in 1955. He married an American named Joy Davidman Gresham later in life in 1956. He was a good friend of J.R.R. Tolkien, another famous author. Lewis died in 1963.
