I am grateful for his guidance and feedback as I developed an understating of this fascinatingly enigmatic piece. And I am especially thankful for his encouragement to explore the parallel I saw with 20th century art works like Rauschenberg’s Erased de Kooning Drawing. I am fortunate to have worked with many brilliant and generous scholars at the University of Texas at Austin. Thank you to the members of my colloquium committee for their insightful and probing questions: Dr. Francesca Consagra and professors Louis Waldman, John Clarke, Richard Shiff, and Linda Henderson. I would like to extend a special thank you to Richard Shiff who not only offered a careful reading of this thesis, but also aided me in the development of a critical examination of Rauschenberg’s evolving narrative surrounding his famous erasure in the five decades following the action.

Dark and detached, the art of Gottfried Helnwein demands a response. He now accepts that viewers may deface his works. Kenneth Baker, Chronicle Art Critic Published 4:00 am, Monday, August 9, 2004 Beautiful Victim I (1974) is a photorealistic watercolor work on cardboard by Gottfried Helnwein. Many of the Austrians works have upset viewers in Germany. Gottfried Helnwein's exhibition at the Legion of Honor includes documentary pictures of an outdoor installation he did at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne in 1988. A long canvas mural of huge photographic portraits of children, titled "Selektion," the piece marked the 50th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the November night in 1938 when the Nazis went on a rampage, attacking Jews and their property throughout Germany. Baker, Kenneth. “Dark and detached, the art of Gottfried Helnwein demands a response.”, SF Gate. August 9, 2004. "I called it 'Selektion,' " Helnwein said in conversation, "because I thought 'selection' was the keyword of the Third Reich. That's what it was all about -- the idea of the small group that can select who has the right to live and who not. The Nazis had these allegedly objective criteria of how you can tell whether somebody's superior or inferior. So I wanted people to confront all these pictures, children from all backgrounds living in Germany today, and I was amazed by the reaction." Some got the drift of his intentions. But one night, soon after the pictures went up, somebody slashed the throats of all the depicted children. "We don't know who or why," Helnwein said.

  • The Orgies Mysteries Theater
Nitsch THE ORGIES MYSTERIES THEATER 2 3 Hermann Nitsch Considered a key figure in Viennese Action Painting of the 1960s, Hermann Nitsch continues to use this radical method of painting, essentially through his creation of the Orgien Mysterien Theater, a concept of ceremonial performance art comparable to Wagner’s Gesamtkunstwerk (total art work). This total art form calls to all five human senses and advocates for a profound existentialist reflection. Hermann Nitsch creates his paintings using his entire body. Therefore, they are simultaneously the origin and the result of his performances. Combining oil and acrylic paint of a certain hue, he spreads it on canvas using unconventional tools as well as his hands, feet and whole body movements. Through these actions, Nitsch demonstrates his energetic, spiritual, sensual and passionate persona. Chaos and violence, which accompany his work, are in fact a celebration of life and mirror the human soul. Fifty years after the radical “Kunst und Revolution” event, we will show that Brus has never stopped developing and reinventing his artistic material time and again,’ according to Stella Rollig, Director General of the Belvedere and Belvedere 21. Günter Brus is now considered one of Austria´s most important international artists. As a representative of Viennese Action Art, during the 1960s he shone a light on the powerful presence of the physical and psychological constitution of man and the oppression of the individual to social rules. With his radical, body-based and performative work, he succeeded in detaching himself from the ‘brand‘ of Viennese Action Art and has since gone down in history as the fundamental pioneer of international action and performance art. In 1970, Günter Brus turned his back on Action Art and focused increasingly on the medium of drawing, with ‘image poems’ and theater works.
