LAUDERDALE OCTOBER 2016 PAGE 3 RABBI’S MESSAGE REMEMBERING 9-11 Recently my wife and I visited the 9-11 Memorial Fifteen years have passed since 9-11, but it is still with Monument in Jerusalem. It is located in Eimek Arazim, us. Big time. on a long, windy, narrow road off of Golda Meir Highway near the Begin Expressway. The most amazing thing RABBI EDWARD DAVIS about it is that it is in Israel, the only country outside of America who has built one. Besides the monument, there is a cenotaph (that is an SAT word for a monument erected in memory of a deceased person or persons who are buried elsewhere) which bears the names of the near 3,000 victims, even victims from countries that do not recognize Israel.

We saw the name of Andrew Zucker, a good friend, son-in-law of Jonothan and Doris Konovitch. Meira and I have a grandson named for him. One name makes the whole thing very personal.

Eliezer Weisshoff is the Israeli sculptor who designed and made the monument. He is a 78 year old Israeli, born in the Machaneh Yehudah neighborhood of Jerusalem, and graduate of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. He was overwhelmed with grief and sorrow on 9-11-01. The sculpture is nine meters high and made of granite, bronze, and aluminum. The design is of a flag waving in the wind.

He wrote the City of New York and asked for a piece of the debris; a steel bar from the collapsed tower is visible in the base.

9-11 was a declaration of war. America has been fighting a war against Islamic radical terrorism. President Obama cannot bring himself to say "Islamic terrorism." These acts of terror have been performed by extremists. He does not want to offend Moslems. [My own opinion is that the president is planning his future. After his presidency, he wants to be in the position of being able to accept Moslem money. He will be worse than Jimmy Carter.]

This is a war that is still being fought fifteen years later. Recently a bomb exploded in Manhattan. The alleged terrorist apprehended was an Afghan by the name of Ahmed Khan Rahami. And I don't believe he acted alone. The war is definitely still being fought.

Since 9-11-01 it has become standard to watch security stations in all public places, similar to Israel. Airports, stadiums, arenas, schools, shuls, and many other places have upgraded security systems. But they do not do profiling, a standard issue for Israeli systems.

Islamic fanatics have realized that they have succeeded in making an impact. They have changed the map. Europe has become a powder keg. They estimate that the majority of European Jews will stay home for Yom Tov rather than risk going to services.

LAUDERDALE OCTOBER 2016 PAGE 7 Mitzvah Monitor High Expectations Rabbi Yosef Weinstock Excerpted from a past sermon delivered on Yom Kippur

Have you ever noticed that in the additional phrases that we add to our Amida during the Aseret Ymei Teshuva, we are constantly raising the stakes: We start with a basic request: Zachreinu L’Chaim. All we want is life. Then we ask for Chaim - Berachamim. Just life is not enough, we ask Hashem to be compassionate when granting us life (and give us more than we deserve). At the end of the Amidah our request gets bolder as we ask for Uchtov L’Chaim Tovim - the life we are now asking for should be good. And right before we conclude we shoot for the stars: Sefer Chaim, Bracha Shalom, Parnasa Tova, we want life - and blessing, peace and a good livelihood. We have high expectations - of Hashem and His capacity to provide us with all that we seek. Just as we have high expectations for Hashem, God has high expectations for us, and encourages us to have high expectations for ourselves.

At the beginning of Chazarat Hashatz for Shacharit tomorrow, we will recite a piyut that gives us a model for high expectations. It states, “Hutmam Mei’rechem Yosheiv Ohalim, Tzurato B’Kisacha Chakta K’Hilim” “The dweller in tents of study was perfect from the womb, You engraved his image on Your throne like the brilliant stars.” This is a reference to Yaakov Avinu, and is based on the Talmud in Chulin 91b: Yaakov has a dream of a ladder planted on earth but stretching Heavenward, with angels ascending and descending. The Gemara explains that angels saw Yaakov’s image carved on God’s Throne of Glory and they couldn’t believe that a mere mortal would be given such a lofty honor.

That Yaakov’s likeness was carved on the Kisei Hakavod teaches us that Hashem had very high expectations for Yaakov. And when the angels compared the likeness of Yaakov on the Kisei Hakavod to the actual Yaakov sleeping on the ground- they realized that the two images matched up: Yaakov had met these lofty expectations. On Yom Kippur we look to Yaakov as the model for what it means to set, and live up, to high expectations.

One could argue that high expectations cause nothing but problems: tension, anxiety, frustration, disappointment. Researchers always point to the Danish as proof (not the baked good - the nation). Year after year, Denmark ranks as the happiest country in the world. What is the secret to Danish happiness? According to one demographer (in a NY Times article) the key is: low expectations. As he put it, “year after year they are pleasantly surprised to find out that not everything is rotten in the state of Denmark.”

Even though low expectations may have their benefits, they also have their dangers. The term “the soft bigotry of low expectations” was made famous by President George W Bush and attributed to his speech writer Michael Gerson. It was originally used in the context of declining test scores in low income school districts. It means that sometimes people don’t excel to the degree that they can/should simply because no one is pushing them to do so. In psychology this is referred to as the Golem Effect (named after the mythic creation of the Maharal - that due to the low expectations associated with it, it became unruly and had to be decommissioned).

The Golem Effect/low expectations can negatively impact our Orthodox community as well. For example: when we place a premium on Jewish education and a Jewish day school education, but don’t at the same time set expectations for parents to be positive role models in the Jewish upbringing of their children. Or when we extol the virtues of joining an Orthodox synagogue but don’t create a vision of what membership really means, both in terms of privileges and responsibilities.

We invoke Yaakov Avinu on Yom Kippur to counteract the temptation of low expectations. We note the high expectations God had for Yaakov and how he met those expectations. During this High Holidays season, let us commit to setting high expectations for ourselves, individually and communally, and then resolve to utilizing the New Year 5777 to meeting and then exceeding our expectations.

YOUNG ISRAEL OF HOLLYWOOD-FT. LAUDERDALE OCTOBER 2016 PAGE 9 QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q: Since standing on an airplane invariably leads to jostling, being asked to move or to fasten seatbelts, should one sit while praying to ensure better concentration, or stand with less concentration?

A: Rabbi Moshe Feinstein ruled that if one would be distracted, it is better to sit. However, during the places in the Shemoneh Esrei where one must bow, one should try to stand (Igrot Moshe O.C. 4:20). One who sat for the recitation of the Shemoneh Esrei does not need to repeat it upon landing (Igrot Moshe ibid). Rabbi Aviner preferred sitting and not participating in a minyan in the back of the plane.

Q: Under what conditions can one clean or polish shoes on Shabbat?

A: One may remove dirt and dust from one’s shoes by hand or with a cloth, or by rinsing them with water, but without rubbing or making them shine. It is forbidden to apply shoe polish or liquid polish, or to smear one’s shoes with oil and the like. It is also not allowed to shine them with a brush or a cloth, even without polish.

Q: How is it permitted to tie a necktie and shoelaces on Shabbat?

A: Shoelaces may be tied with a bow over a single knot as they are customarily untied within 24 hours. One may, likewise, tie a necktie if it is untied the same day. A necktie can also be tied in such a way that it can be untied by pulling one end, or it can be tied before Shabbat in a way that the loop can be enlarged or tightened so that it can be put on and removed at will. Double knotted shoelaces are prohibited on Shabbat.

Q: Could you review the custom of an Aveil at the cemetery, and when he first comes home.

A: At the cemetery the mourner removes his/her leather footwear and at that time shiva begins. The mourner may not wear any footwear that is even partly made of leather. The mourner does not “make up” any Shemoneh Esrei missed from the time of death until burial. The first meal that the mourner eats after the burial should include bread, a drink, and a hardboiled egg, not belonging to the mourner’s family. This meal should not be prepared by someone who is either another mourner for this deceased or the spouse of one of the mourners. If this special first meal cannot be eaten on the same Hebrew day as the burial, it is omitted. The mourner is permitted to eat meat and drink a small amount of wine. The mourner is not permitted to do work or conduct transactions even through another person. The mourner may not sit on furniture higher than 12 inches. To avoid the requirement of bensching with a Mezuman, the person should not eat a meal with others. During shiva the mourner should not say Shalom Aleichem to others, and they should not say it to him. During the first three days if someone does say Shalom Aleichem to the mourner, he is to respond “I am a mourner.” For the fourth day through the end of shiva, if someone says Shalom Aleichem to the mourner, he returns the greeting. The Minhag is not to say hello or good morning to the mourner. The mourner is permitted to acknowledge visitors by nodding. The mourner should not stand up for anyone even a Gadol Hador.

Q: What is the origin of Shabbat Kiddush?

A: It is written “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8). This is interpreted to mean that we should “remember” the Sabbath day by “sanctifying” it with a cup of wine and the recital of Kiddush. We must remember the Sabbath day with Kiddush when it enters and with Havdallah when it leaves. The Rokeach writes: Mikra Kodesh Yihyeh Lachem – you shall have a holy convocation (Leviticus 22:7). From this verse we deduce that Kiddush is to be recited on a festival.

Q: Why is the amount to be given for the Kohen for the redemption of the firstborn (Pidyon HaBen) been set at $5?

A: When the Leviyim were taken into Temple service in place of the firstborn, the firstborn were found to number 273 more than Leviyim. This excess of firstborn Israelites therefore had to be redeemed at 5 shekels each (Numbers 3:44-51).

Israel’s Natural Gas: A Cornerstone of Regional Cooperation

A popular witticism is that Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt to the sole place in the Middle East without significant energy resources. Although Israel still depends on oil imports to meet its energy needs, the recent discovery of several offshore natural gas reserves is expected to help the Jewish state attain greater energy independence and ultimately, potentially, become an energy exporter. Already, this prospect is helping Israel and her neighbors improve their relationship.

In 2015, Israel generated 42 percent of its electricity from natural gas, while coal and oil accounted for the remaining 58 percent. In 2016 natural gas is expected to account for 50 percent of Israel’s total electricity generation.

Israel discovered its first offshore gas field, the Mari-B, in 2000. The Mari-B’s reserves were depleted by 2013, yet while in production, the field satisfied 40 percent of Israel’s natural gas demand. In 2009, the Tamar field was discovered off the coast of Haifa and began production in 2013. The field currently satisfies almost all of Israel’s domestic demand for natural gas.

The Leviathan field, discovered in 2010 and expected to come online in 2019, offers the Jewish state the greatest opportunity so far to become an energy exporter—the field is the second largest reserve of natural gas to be discovered in the Mediterranean Sea. Under a plan approved in 2013, Israel will reserve 60 percent of its total natural gas reserves for domestic use, which is expected to satisfy Israel’s energy demands for at least the next 25 years, while the remaining 40 percent will be exported.

In January 2016, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades met to cement a new geopolitical bloc, the cornerstone of which is Israel’s future export of natural gas to Cyprus, Greece, and the rest of Europe. The three countries also plan to deepen their diplomatic cooperation. For example, Greek and Cypriot support for Israel within the European Union (EU) will be crucial in helping to blunt one-sided resolutions against the Jewish state. Already, the two countries reportedly helped water down a one-sided EU resolution concerning the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

The prospect of natural gas exports also appeared to play a key role in the June 2016 Turkey-Israel reconciliation deal. As Alan Makovsky notes in an August 2016 interview in AIPAC’s Near East Report, Turkey seeks to diversify its energy imports, as it is currently reliant on Russia. Israel could provide one such source.

Israel began the 21st century dependent on foreign energy imports. However, with the recent discovery of large offshore natural gas reserves, the Jewish state has the opportunity to forge ahead as an important regional energy exporter and increasingly valuable partner for neighboring countries.
