Over the next six days, you will witness six (6) teams from across FIBA’s five regions competing for the right to represent their country at the Olympic Basketball Tournament taking place in Brazil from 6-21 August. In this media guide, you will find in-depth information on all of the participating teams and players. For your reference, we have also included a historical section, which outlines the final standings at past FIBA events and at the Olympic Games. The OQTs are high-level competitions. Both in 2008 and 2012, when the tournament was held as a single 12-team event, two of the three teams that earned the spots on offer for the Summer Games then went on to reach the Quarter- Finals of the Olympic Basketball Tournament in Beijing and London respectively. FIBA OLYMPIC QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT 2016 MANILLA, PHILIPPINES | 5-10 JULY 5 PATRICK BAUMANN The Philippines, our hosts, will look to return to the Olympics for the first time since 1972. They head into this tournament on the back of impressive performances, having finished runners-up at the 2013 and 2015 editions of the FIBA Asia Championship and competing in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. Horacio Muratore Patrick Baumann FIBA President FIBA Secretary General International Olympic Committee Member (IOC) FIBA OLYMPIC QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT 2016 6 MANILLA, PHILIPPINES | 5-10 JULY citY & venue Manila & Mall of Asia Arena City • Manila, the capital of the country, prides itself as a true Asian mega-city with traces of Spanish and American influence giving it more soul • Aside from being the social media capital of the world, the Philippines is home to some of the most hospitable people in the world • The weather here is warm, and is matched only by the Filipino’s natural warmth to host and welcome guests, especially those who share our passion for hoops. • Population: over 1.6 million inhabitants in Manila Venue • The tournament venue, the Mall of Asia Arena, is just a stone’s throw away from SM By The Bay, a strip of commercial establishments which offers a spectacular view of the famed Manila Bay sunset. • It has a seating capacity of 16,000 for sporting events, and a full house capacity of 20,000. • The Arena officially opened in 2012 Address: Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay, Metro Manila, Philippines Venue Airport Media Hotel FIBA OLYMPIC QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT 2016 8 MANILLA, PHILIPPINES | 5-10 JULY Qualifying Process for Rio 2016 Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament According to the FIBA Internal Regulations: Olympic Qualification is achieved as follows: Twelve (12) teams will take part in the Rio 2016 Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament, from 6 to 21 August. Eighteen (18) teams shall participate in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments. Three (3) FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments will be held in three different locations to qualify one (1) team each to the Rio 2016 Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament. The following teams, representing all five (5) Zones, are eligible to participate in the FIBA Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament, as they are the best placed teams of those not directly qualified for the Olympic Games from each Zone. Zone Eligible teams Best placed teams per Zone (not directly qualified for the Olympic Games) Africa 3 3 teams from AfroBasket 2015 (rank 2-4) Angola, Tunisia, Senegal Americas 3 3 teams from 2015 FIBA Americas Championship (rank 2-4) Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico Asia 3 3 teams from 2015 FIBA Asia Championship (rank 2-3) Philippines, Iran, Japan Europe 5 +2 +1 5 teams from EuroBasket 2015 (rank 3-7) France, Serbia, Greece, Italy, Czech Republic 2 invited teams (rank 8-9)*: Latvia, Croatia Wildcard: Turkey Oceania 1 1 team from 2015 FIBA Oceania Championship (runner-up) New Zealand *Teams invited as Serbia and Italy will participate as organisers of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments. All teams listed above have been divided into three tournaments through a draw that established the groups and positions in the groups. Nine (9) teams have already qualified for the Rio 2016 Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament: • Brazil (Host) • USA (FIBA Basketball World Cup Champion) • Nigeria (AfroBasket 2015 Champion) • Venezuela & Argentina (2015 FIBA Americas Champion and runner up) • China (2015 FIBA Asia Champion) • Spain & Lithuania (EuroBasket 2015 Champion and runner up) • Australia (2015 FIBA Oceania Champion) FIBA OLYMPIC QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT 2016 MANILLA, PHILIPPINES | 5-10 JULY 9 Olympic Regulations for Qualifying Classification of teams TournamentS Teams shall be classified according to their win-loss records, namely two (2) - System of points for each game won, one (1) point for each game lost (including lost by default) and zero (0) points for a game lost by forfeit. Competition If 2 or more teams have the same win-loss record of all games in the group, the game(s) between these 2 or more teams shall decide on the classification. If the 2 or more teams have the same win-loss record of the games between them, GROUP PHASE further criteria will be applied in the following order: GROUP A GROUP B • Higher goal difference of the games between them A1 B1 • Higher number of goals scored in the games between them • Higher goal difference of all games in the group A2 B2 • Higher number of goals scored in all games in the group A3 B3 If these criteria still cannot decide, a draw shall decide on the classification.
