Chapter 1 is a collaborative effort and meant to provide supplementary scanning electron micrographs for a forthcoming description of a genus of tardigrade. Three micrographs illustrate the structures that will be used to distinguish this genus from its confamilials. An In toto lateral view presents the external structures relative to one another. A second micrograph shows a dentate collar at the distal end of each of the fourth pair of legs, a posterior sensory organ (cirrus E), basal spurs at the base of two of four claws on each leg, and a ventral plate. The third micrograph illustrates an appendage on the second leg (p2) of the animal and a lateral appendage (C′) at the posterior sinistral margin of the first paired plate (II). This image also reveals patterning on the plate margin and the leg.

    Seção Fontes e Documentos Trocas de correspondências de Afrânio do Amaral: um caminho para entender política e ciência Sabrina Acosta1 ​ As cartas2 tratadas nesta seção pertencem ao acervo do Instituto ​ Butantan, onde estão guardadas correspondências trocadas entre Afrânio do Amaral e seus diferentes interlocutores ao longo de sua carreira científica. Datadas de 1923 a 1982, as correspondências abordam diferentes assuntos que envolviam a rotina de Afrânio (CALLEFFO; FERNANDES, 2013, p. 109). A ​ ​ divulgação dessas correspondências tem como objetivo apresentar brevemente uma rede de relações entre destinatários e remetentes, difundindo as ideias e as informações registradas entre eles. Conhecer esses documentos possibilita vislumbrar algumas questões sobre o trabalho realizado por Afrânio no Instituto Butantan. Além de conhecer as ações políticas e as tomadas de decisões estratégicas que envolviam a direção de um instituto de pesquisa científica, é possível assinalar conexões e contribuições de pesquisadores, instituições e diversos países. Muitas questões ainda podem ser exploradas com os estudos das cartas e, com o auxílio de outras fontes, será possível formular novas perguntas para compreender os diferentes movimentos da atividade científica desenvolvida no Instituto. Camargo (2011) afirma que, nas necessidades, nos interesses e nos assuntos dos correspondentes, a escrita ocupa um espaço de prática social concretizado nas próprias cartas e construído no jogo das interações sociais (p.18).     ON BRAZILIAN SUPRATIDAL AND ESTUARINE SNAILS by EVELINE and ERNST MARCUS with 10 plates The following study comprises two Ellobiidae (Pulmonata) of the subfamily Melampodinae and three Rissoacea (Prosobranchia): one species of Assiminea Fleming, 1828, and two of Littoridina Sou- leyet, 1852. The association of ellobiids and Assiminea is frequent in the supralittoral fringe of lagoons and estuaries (Morton 1955b, p. 131; Abbott 1958, p. 229) For these thalassogenous snails and also for the Hydrobiidae and others the brackish water is a migratory route from an originally marine intertidal habitat to the land conquered by Pythia, Carychium, Paludinella, Truncatella and others. This emi­ gration from the sea is especially evident in lower latitudes, where marginal backwaters of lagoons and estuaries dry out during the dry season (Moore 1958, p. 205) Also tolerance for low salinities is greater at higher than at lower temperatures (ibid., p. 43; Fretter & Graham 1962, p. 580) Our thanks are due to the Directors of the Oceanographic Ins­ titute Dr. Ingvar Emilsson and Dra. Introduction The names of Ernst and Eveline Marcus are so well-known to bryozoan workers that it surprised me when preparing this paper to find little published biographical material available beyond a few brief obituaries. Fortunately, some additional sources have made it possible to create a more complete picture of their lives for the IBA history session. Meeting several current and former members of the Zoology Department at the University of São Paulo during the 16th International Congress of Zoology in Athens in September 2000, made me aware of Ernst’s still vivid reputation as a great teacher and the founder of biological science at that university. One of those present, Cláudio Gonçalves Tiago, Centro de Biologia Marinha, University of São Paulo, generously offered to interview some older and retired colleagues concerning their remembrances of the Marcus’s years in Brazil, to translate and e-mail their comments to me. He also found and sent copies of additional biographical material published in Brazil. Another rich source was the correspondence of the American bryozoan worker, Mary Dora Rogick, passed on to me by Timothy Wood in the hope that I could find a permanent archive for it.

[email protected] Resumen De Chile se conocen 25 especies nominales de planarias terrestres, procedentes de unas pocas localidades situadas entre las regiones de Atacama (28° S) y de Aisén (46° S); sólo tres de ellas taxonómicamente bien conocidas. De las restantes especies se dispone de información morfológica insuficiente con fines taxonómicos o filogenéticos, o presentan problemas de sinonimia. En muestreos recientes realizados en el país se han recolectado más especímenes de especies probablemente aún no conocidas por la ciencia. La acción conjunta del examen del material tipo de las especies descritas, del muestreo en otras regiones aún no exploradas con esta finalidad y de la formación de un cuerpo de taxónomos son pasos necesarios para abordar este grupo de vermes tan diverso y desconocido. Palabras clave: Geoplanidae, taxonomía, diversidad, neotropical. Overview of the diversity of chilean land planarians (Platyhelminthes, Tricladida) Abstract Approximately 25 species of terrestrial planarians are known from Chile, collected in a few localities between the Atacama (28° S) and Aisén (46° S) regions, only three of them taxonomically well known. From the remaining species, the available morphological information is insufficient for taxonomic or phylogenetic purposes, or presents synonymy problems.
