Conheeney helped lead the Hokies to a 2-0 start to the 2011 season. In the season opener against UNCG, Conheeney took four shots and connected on two of them, including the game-winning goal for Tech. She has scored the game-winning goal in every season opener in her career.

TOUGH COMPETITION • Seven ACC women’s soccer teams are included among the Top-25 NSCAA rankings, including four teams among the top seven and five among the top 10. North Carolina holds the No. 1 spot in the poll, followed by Maryland at No. 3, Virginia at No. 4, Florida State follows at No. 7 and Duke at No. 9. Boston College holds the No. 12 spot and defending ACC Champion Wake Forest is No. 15.

SEASONED VETS • The Hokies return five starters and four players who have played in at least 15 games from last year’s squad. Now sophomores Jazmine Reeves and Dayle Colpitts both received ACC All-Freshmen accolades last season, while Kelly Conheeney was named to the 2010 VaSID All-State second team. Conheeney led the team in four categories, including shots (46), game-winning goals (3), assists (12) and points (22).

Although Georgie Highton is from Connecticut, she was born in England, while Samantha Cormode, Katie Yensen, Danielle King, Ellie Zoepfl and transfer Kimberley Anderson all reside in northern Virginia.

Yensen, a freshman, had five chances by the 21:09 mark, before she connected on a ball that Amanda Gerhard sent into the box that Yenson shot from 12-yards out into the left corner of the goal 27 minutes into the game to put Tech on the board, 1-0. Ten minutes later, junior Kelly Conheeney sent a free kick from middle of field into the box and Mayrose sprinted ahead of the Dukes’ defense and beat the JMU goalkeeper Kate Courter with an 8-yard shot into the left corner to give the Hokies the 2-0 advantage at the end of the half. After the break, the Dukes (0-1-1) responded with an early goal that was set up by Jessica Barndt, as she sent a long throw-in from the left side of the field and was headed into the far corner of the goal by Yolie Anderson-Golhor that put JMU on the board. After Conheeney had a chance with a penalty kick that the Duke keeper saved, Reeves was setup by Conheeney at the 81:01 mark, when she sent a ball into the box from the left touchline and it deflected off a JMU player, where Reeves knocked the ball into the net from 10-yards out to secure the game for the Hokies. Tech just out-shot JMU by only four shots as the Hokies tallied 15, while the Dukes charted 11. The Hokies started sophomore Dayle Colpitts in the goal, but left the game after a collision with a JMU player 37:06 into the game. Anna Romeiser replaced Colpitts for the final 52:54 minutes and she recorded two saves for Tech. JMU’s redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Kate Courter made six saves.

Aug. 26, 2011 Goldsworthy scores two as Hokies blank High Point 3-0 BLACKSBURG, Va. – Junior defender Julia Goldsworthy recorded five points to lead the Virginia Tech women’s soccer squad to a blanking of High Point, 3-0 in its home opener Friday night at Thompson Field. The Hokie defense jumped out to a solid start by limiting the Panther offense to just one shot in the first half. Nine shots into the game, Tech put the first point on the board when Goldsworthy connected on a corner kick from Kelly Conheeney, connecting from 19-yards out to go into the half up 1-0. At the 52nd minute, Shannon Mayrose dribbled up the left sideline and placed the ball low into the net on a pass from Goldsworthy to record her second goal of the season. The final goal of the game came from Goldsworthy at the 69:22 mark as she took a long shot from 35-yards out, causing the High Point goalie to slip and the ball went right past her fingers to secure the game. In goal for the Hokies was redshirt sophomore Anna Romeiser, who recorded three saves, including a phenominal save at the 29:49 mark as she back-peddled to catch a long shot and just kept the ball from crossing the line as she recorded her first shutout. High Point’s Andrea Ritchie took the loss, making eight saves for the Panthers.
