Olympic Training Camp in Missoula for the next three weeks are ranked among the nation's

top 20. (The rankings are based on performance.)

Camp Director and University of Montana Track Coach Harley Lewis announced the names

of the runners Thursday which includes Jerome Liebenberg, Tarry Harrison and .

Liebenberg is the 1970 NCAA steeplechase champion from Western Michigan University.

He has the fourth fastest time in the event ever run by an American. His best effort in

the steeplechase was 8:32.2.

According to the June 11 issue of the magazine, Liebenberg was ranked as the top

American steeplechase. He took third in the NCAA finals this year in Seattle behind Sid­

ney Sink, Bowling Green, and , Oregon. Sink set an American record in the AAU

championships in Eugene, Ore., three weeks ago with an 8:26.4 time.

Harrison finished sixth in the AAU six-mile with a 13:07.4 effort and according to the

magazine was ranked seventh in the nation in the two-mile and tenth in the three-mile.

Harrison runs for the Southern California Striders.

He and University of Houston's Leonard Hilton should be quite a duo, Lewis said. Hil­

ton took third in the NCAA three mile with a 13:31.6 clocking. He has a 13:04.3 time to his credit.

In the six-mile Wes Dutton, 11th ranked with a 28:27.9 time; , 14th

ranked with a 28:28.8 time and , 19th ranked with a 28:31.8 time. Dutton competes

for Mid-America Track Club in Kansas City, Kan.; Galloway competes for the Florida Track

Club in Tallahassee and Brown for the University of Tennessee.

Six runners participating in the camp are nationally ranked. Tom Robinson,

Galloway, Byron Lowry, Tom Fleming and Doug Schmenk are rated by the magazine in the na­

tion’s top twenty-five.

Robinson, a Spokane native competing for Washington State, leads the pack with a

2:22:00.0 time and is ranked 10th in the country. Calloway is 11th with a 2:22:10.0 ef­

fort while Lowry is 13th, Fleming is 19th and Schmenk is 22nd.

Lewis said three high school runners rated in the nation's top five among distance

competitors also will participate in the camp. Dale Fleet, an 8:53.8 two miler from San

Diego, Calif.; Jose Amaya, a 13:56.0 three-miler from Los Angeles, Calif.; and Robert Eden,

a 29:27 six-miler from Richmond, Va., are the three.

Lewis said the three milers range from 13:04.3 to 13:58 in time variance while the

six milers range from 28:20.6 to 29:27 with most of the times in the 28 minute bracket.

The marathon runners all have times in the two hour and twenty-minute bracket.

Lewis said the camp is for 5,000 and 10,000 meter and marathon runners.

He said the coaches for the three week training session will arrive Friday and hold

a press conference Friday at 2 p.m. in the University of Montana, University Center.

Lewis said the athletes will arrive Sunday and begin training Monday. He said he and

his staff would meet Friday and Saturday to determine the training for the camp.
