I denounce the Ethiopian government and its financial backers—the US, the UK, Germany, , Canada, and the World Bank, which provide financing to Ethiopia through international aid packages—for the unjust imprisonment of Omot Agwa Okwoy, Ashinie Astin, and Jamal Oumar Hojele. Helping to give indigenous and marginalized people a voice about their most precious resources—their land and their food—is NOT terrorism; it is the foundation of a democratic and sustainable development policy. I call on the government of Ethiopia to drop of all charges against the detainees and release them immediately.

The rate of progress has been amazing, the commitment of many selfless people in the public and private sectors has been truly impressive, but.... and it is a really sorrowful "but".... I am deeply disappointed that the cost in human terms is beginning to be too big for the country to bear, that the early honourable commitments to democracy and free speech are being dishonoured. Treating people as obstacles to progress if they dare peacefully to raise honest concerns is unacceptable. As a friend and supporter of Ethiopia I ask its government and those who support it to look deeply into their conciences and the possible consequences of their actions... or inaction. 172 10/22/15 Duke Tagoe Accra Ghana The state of terror and tyranny of the West backed Ethiopian government must end now. Small farms with varied local flora means food security for everyone. Also the people who are displaced become internal refugees and a possible source of extremism and political instability.
