MYSO 2012-13 ANNUAL REPORT | 4 Message from Linda Edelstein, Executive Director Dear Friends, What an honor it is to join the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO)! I am deeply grateful to the MYSO Board of Directors, and especially to Fran Richman and the incredible legacy she has left, for developing the organization MYSO is today. From modest beginnings in 1956 to become one of the largest and most artistically excellent youth orchestras, both nationally and internationally, leading this incredible organization is both inspiring and humbling. I was recently reminded “… this is not a job, this is my passion.” No truer words could be said about my role as the Executive Director for the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra. Every day I have the good fortune to meet families, children, volunteers and a community who all desire to ensure a bright future for our region’s young people. Not only is MYSO instrumental in changing lives through its 25 ensemble programs and more than 20 enrichment offerings, MYSO embarked upon an extensive and innovative evaluation project, piloted in the 2012-13 season, to identify and measure statistically valid, quantifiable outcomes of our growing Community Partnership Programs. The recently released final report indicates that 46% of the students made “statistically significant growth” as a result of program participation. According to the report, “MYSO offers students what they need, when they need it.” I encourage you to read more about our work in this annual report, or request a copy of the complete study for your review. I invite you to join me in attending a rehearsal or concert to personally experience the life-changing work of our nearly 1,000 students, representing more than 200 schools, 60 cities and 14 counties. I share the board and staff’s pride of Cordially, accomplishment as we reflect on a remarkable 2012-13 season and look forward to advancing our mission to foster creativity, collaboration and critical thinking skills through our highly successful ensemble and music training programs. Thanks to the community’s support of the United Performing Arts Fund, as well as hundreds of individuals, foundations and corporations, MYSO is thriving and meeting its mission every day. We are grateful to you, for as our partner, you also are Linda J. Edelstein instrumental in changing lives!
