    RAINFOREST ANTS (HYMENOPTERA: FORMICIDAE) ALONG AN ELEVATIONAL GRADIENT AT EUNGELLA IN THE CLARKE RANGE, CENTRAL QUEENSLAND COAST, AUSTRALIA BURWELL, C. J.1,2 & NAKAMURA, A.1,3 Here we provide a faunistic overview of the rainforest ant fauna of the Eungella region, located in the southern part of the Clarke Range in the Central Queensland Coast, Australia, based on systematic surveys spanning an elevational gradient from 200 to 1200 m asl. Ants were collected from a total of 34 sites located within bands of elevation of approximately 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000 and 1200 m asl. Surveys were conducted in March 2013 (20 sites), November 2013 and March–April 2014 (24 sites each), and ants were sampled using five methods: pitfall traps, leaf litter extracts, Malaise traps, spray- ing tree trunks with pyrethroid insecticide, and timed bouts of hand collecting during the day. In total we recorded 142 ant species (described species and morphospecies) from our systematic sampling and observed an additional species, the green tree ant Oecophylla smaragdina, at the lowest eleva- tions but not on our survey sites. With the caveat of less sampling intensity at the lowest and highest elevations, species richness peaked at 600 m asl (89 species), declined monotonically with increasing and decreasing elevation, and was lowest at 1200 m asl (33 spp.). Ant species composition progres- sively changed with increasing elevation, but there appeared to be two gradients of change, one from 200–600 m asl and another from 800 to 1200 m asl. Differences between the lowland and upland faunas may be driven in part by a greater representation of tropical and arboreal-nesting sp ecies in the lowlands and a greater representation of subtropical species in the highlands.

    The impact and spread of the invasive garden ant: an alien invasive species in the UK Phillip Buckham-Bonnett PhD Thesis University of York Biology December 2019 Abstract Alongside climate change and habitat loss, invasive non-native species are a major threat to the natural world. Ants are amongst the most widespread and damaging invasive species. The invasive garden ant, Lasius neglectus, has only recently been detected in the United Kingdom and is the country’s first invasive ant species. This thesis aims to assess the impact and spread of this species in the UK. In this thesis I carry out a UK-wide risk assessment for the species and develop a protocol for experimentally assessing its potential impact on an economically important crop plant. I investigate behaviours that may contribute to its success as an invasive species. I evaluate the feasibility of commonly used pesticides for the control of Lasius neglectus, and conclude that granular products, while convenient for large- scale application, are not suitable for this species due to low palatability; this may hinder future control attempts. I carry out a large-scale survey to assess the distribution of this easily-overlooked species, and conclude that while it is not as widely distributed in botanic gardens as expected, the number of urban sites where it occurs is increasing rapidly. We studied the diversity of this species by employing a multidisciplinary approach and combining data from our surveys, museum and private collections, and citizen science platforms. As a result, we have revealed the existence of a second species, which we describe as Colobopsis imitans sp. nov., distributed allopatrically from Co. truncata and living in the Maghreb, Sicily and southern Iberia. While the pigmentation of Co. truncata is reminiscent of Dolichoderus quadripunctatus, that of Co. imitans is similar to Crematogaster scutellaris, with which Co. imitans lives in close spatial association, and whose foraging trails it habitually follows, similar to Camponotus lateralis and other ant-mimicking ants.

Dunn # Springer Science+Business Media New York 2014 Abstract Urbanization is thought to lead to the loss of biodiversity both because of habitat disturbance and the increased abundance of invasive species. However, most studies of biodiversity in cities are conducted on a short time scale, usually less than 3 years, and so miss the long-term dynamics of communities inhabiting these ecosystems. Here we use a study performed in the early 70’s on North Carolina State University (Raleigh, USA) as a baseline to evaluate the long term effects of disturbance and introduced species on native ant communi- ties. Ant species were sampled almost 40 years later using a variety of sampling techniques in order to maximize species collection. Our results show that while the number of exotic species increased, including three major invasive ants, native ant species richness remained high. Furthermore, our survey was able to add several new records for the area considered, in comparison of the 70’s study, for a total of 89 species known from NCSU campus. After comparison with other studies, our results represent one of the most species-rich urban environments monitored and thus open encouraging perspective on how urban ecosystems could contribute to the preservation of the biodiversity of small-bodies organisms such as ants. MOREAU Abstract Molecular data have revolutionized our understanding of ant evolution and systematics by making available large quantities of data and providing an independent character set to infer phylogenetic relationships. Although the first ant phylogeny from molecular sequence data was published less than 15 years ago, the field has grown rapidly with impli- cations for all levels of ant biology. Not only has molecular data helped resolve the phylogenetic relationships of many ant groups, but with well-resolved phylogenies inferences about the evolution of morphology, ages of clades, diversifi- cation, associations with mutualists, behavior, development, and other areas of research in ant biology have benefited from this active avenue of research. Questions of speciation, population genetics, phylogeography, systematics, biogeo- graphy, and many other active lines of ant research are now routinely addressed with molecular data. With the ease of generating large amounts of sequence data increasing and costs decreasing the next frontier in myrmecology will be to insure that future ant biologists are able to take advantage of this important tool while still being trained in basic ant biol- ogy and taxonomy.
