But for those of us who lived through it, there was another, earlier part of the 60’s known as the All Mod Generation. The Beatles were gods to us and anything British was the best. American All boys pleaded with their parents for permission All to grow their hair over their ears, and affected Red very bad British accents. Girls shortened their John Rampage skirts, first to mini and then micro mini lengths, Orange to the exasperation of both parents and school principals. The dream for Green most women was to go to Carnaby Street in their plastic Go Go boots, buy some clothes at Mary Quant, have their hair done at Vidal Sassoon, Red stop for tea with Twiggy and Lulu and then Froog the night away at a Orange, Red, Yellow, Green discotheque listening to the latest hits by the Fab Four, The Dave Clark Five and The Rascals. Note: for those of you over 60, don’t pretend you Blue don’t remember every one of these references. Yellow Green & All SHOUT! The Mod Musical is a celebration of that period, and particu- larly of the fantastic female vocalists of the early 60’s. Some, like Petula Orange Clark, Lulu, and Dusty Springfield, produced hit after hit and their names are still very well known and recognized. Others had one very big All hit and then slipped into obscurity. But though their names may not be Yellow remembered, the songs they made popular have never been forgotten. SHOUT! doesn’t pretend to revolutionize modern theatre, or make a All strong social or political statement. It just wants to take you on a short All journey to the past, hopefully to re-live some favorite musical memories, and most importantly to entertain you. Green Blue & Orange Hope you enjoy the show, hope you have a “fab” time and always re- member, please don’t sleep in the subway, darling! And, wear a mask! • The Plant-Parasitic Nematode Songbook Anthology
THE PLANT-PARASITIC NEMATODE SONGBOOK ANTHOLOGY LYRICS BY KATHY MERRIFIELD I wrote the three volumes of The Plant-Parasitic Nematode Songbook in the late 1980s and early 1990s during work on an MS in Nematode Diseases of Plants and then as a research assistant with Professor Russ Ingham at Oregon State University. These included Volume I: Serious Music for Serious Pests, Volume II: More Serious Music for Serious Pests, and Volume III: Camp Songs. The melodies were hand-written on staff paper; the lyrics were also hand- written. Each of the three volumes existed as comb-bound hard copies. When my supply of hard copies ran low, I replaced them with The Plant-Parasitic Nematode Songbook Anthology, which was also produced as comb-bound hard copies. The lyrics were computer-printed, and the melodies were omitted. As in this digital version, I figured that most people don’t read music, so it really wouldn’t help much. Besides, many of the melodies are familiar. Maybe melodies can be added in the future – maybe even computer generated so they’re legible. The Anthology contained three new songs in addition to those from the first three volumes. These were cowboy songs from the forthcoming Volume IV: Cowboy Songs. Volume IV has now been forthcoming for about twenty years. PROCESSIONAL Melody: Kahinto Kamya, Processional (Camp Fire Girls) -- by Helen Gerrish Hughes, © Camp Fire, 1954 We dig the soil from our random design With measured tread and slow Because this stand is in deep decline Because it's infested with nematodes Nematodes, nematodes We harvest nematodes out of the soil With measured water and slow It's worth the hours of grueling toil To find parasitic nematodes Nematodes, nematodes We count a thousand samples a day With measured fingers and slow Our eyeballs twirl and our brains decay Because we've seen so many nematodes Nematodes, nematodes *********************************** Helen Gerrish Hughes was born Abbie Gerrish in 1863.

  • Women in Rock OLLI Berkeley Course Material
Syllabus for Women in Rock: From the 1950s to the 1980s Instructor: Richie Unterberger, [email protected] OLLI Berkeley Week One: Women in Rock: The Early Years and The Girl Groups In the 1950s, rhythm and blues singers like Ruth Brown and LaVern Baker have some of the first rock’n’roll hits; Wanda Jackson and the Collins Kids are top rockabilly acts; and Brenda Lee becomes the first woman rock superstar. As New York’s Brill Building becomes established as the top place for rock publishers, women like Carole King, Cynthia Weil, and Ellie Greenwich become some of pop-rock’s most successful songwriters. Girl groups like the Shirelles, the Crystals, the Ronettes, the Chiffons, and the Cookies have numerous hits in the early 1960s, forming one of the major trends in rock of the period. In the early 1960s, some of the most R&B-oriented girl groups become some of the first soul stars, especially for Motown Records, with the Marvelettes, Martha & the Vandellas, the Supremes, and Mary Wells. Week Two: Women in Soul and British Rock Women soul singers emerge throughout the country, some of them more pop-oriented (Maxine Brown, Dionne Warwick), some of them earthier (Carla Thomas, Irma Thomas, Etta James). Aretha Franklin is anointed the Queen of Soul after moving to Atlantic Records and adopting a tougher, more spiritual sound. Other women soul singers with a forceful style emerge and increase in popularity, like Gladys Knight, Nina Simone, and the Staple Singers. Although all-male guitar bands dominate the British Invasion, a good number of women singers also make an impact both in their native UK and in the US.
