A DISRUPTIVE APPROACH

Disruption Books is an independent publisher focused on nonfiction thought leadership.

After spending years working with the publishing industry, we concluded that it was badly broken, especially for the goals and timelines of high-profile authors with provocative ideas.

So we decided to start a publishing company designed with these authors specifically in mind. And we’ve built something that can offer more than most publishers:

Full editorial control of the manuscript. We will make recommendations about the most strategic and marketable way to structure a book, and define its tone and content, but we will ultimately defer to our authors on the direction the book takes. This is dramatically different than the experience with traditional publishing houses, where the editor’s views, not the author’s, will be the ultimate arbiter of the project’s direction.

Guaranteed publication. We publish without the representation of an agent, based on our authors’ timelines and the timeliness of a book’s content, rather than the constraints of a traditional publishing calendar.

Ownership of the editorial rights and a larger share of royalties. Traditional publishers pay authors between 4 and 10 percent of the list price of a book. Disruption Books offers its authors royalties of 25 to 75 percent of the net sales.

We bring the know-how. Our authors bring the vision. Together, we turn big ideas into bold books.

SUMMARY

Most of us spend our lives talking ourselves out of things. But what could you accomplish if you never held yourself back? You might live a life as extraor- dinary as the one Stanley Weiss has lived for nearly a century.

A skinny Jewish kid from Philadelphia training to fight and likely die in the U.S. invasion of Japan in 1945, Stanley Weiss came home to the death of his loving but weak father, who left his mother penniless. Vowing on the spot not to let his insecurities limit him as they had his father, Weiss pledged that his mother would never have to worry. Inspired by a Humphrey Bogart movie, Weiss moved to a foreign country to hunt for treasure—where Rule Number One was ‘’Don’t Die.’’ Along the way, his zest for living has taken him from the company of legendary artists and poets in Mexico, to writers and beatniks in 1960s San Francisco and Hollywood; from drunken nights with a notorious spy, to friendships with three of the men who played James Bond; from glamorous parties in Gstaad and Phuket, to power politics in London and Washington, DC. Being Dead Is Bad for Business is a story of growth, tenacious focus, and good humor. Stanley Weiss’s story will inspire and surprise while reminding us all that being dead is bad for business—and being boring is bad for life.

Where Have You Gone, Harry Truman? The selected works of Stanley A. Weiss Stanley A. Weiss

Publicity: Michael Pauker | [email protected]

SUMMARY

For those who believe U.S. leadership still matters, Where Have You Gone, Harry Truman? will inspire, inform, provoke—and enthrall.

For three decades, Stanley Weiss has brought rare behind-the-scenes looks at countries most Westerners have only begun to understand, explaining the importance of key issues, players, and regions long before they were considered important. Well before the attention of the world was shifting to the places he knew best—from India to Indonesia, Myanmar to Mexico, Thailand to the Middle East— he was explaining how much they mattered and urging the United States to pay attention. When the history of Asia and the West’s pivot eastward in the twenty-first century is written, Stanley Weiss will provide the first draft.

This volume of selected articles and essays represents a life at the center of business and international politics.

Back to Balance The art, science, and business of medicine Dr. Halee Fischer-Wright

Publicity: Kris Pauls | [email protected]

SUMMARY

When asked about the part of health care that matters most, patients, physicians, and practice administrators have one thing in common: the part of medicine that’s most important to them is the human side of medicine.

But today, the human side of medicine is dying. It is being rendered increasingly irrelevant by the other two sides that make up the modern practice of medicine: business and science. As doctors and practices feel ever-increasing pressure to lower costs and deliver better results, business and science—while equally important to delivering outstanding care—have overstepped their bounds.

The solution, says Dr. Fischer-Wright, is to bring the art, science, and business of medicine into balance—with each side playing its part and no more to drive healthy outcomes. To fix things, we must rotate the system back to a place that enables again what the best doctors and practices have always brought to their patients: compassion.

SUMMARY

The Constitutional Change We Need to Protect Our Priceless Natural Resources

For decades, activists have relied on federal and state legislation to fight for a cleaner environment. And for decades, they’ve been fighting a losing battle. The sad truth is, our laws are designed to accommodate pollution rather than prevent it.

But there is a solution, argues veteran environmentalist Maya K. van Rossum: bypass the laws and turn to the ultimate authority—our state and federal constitutions.

Now, with The Green Amendment, van Rossum lays out an inspiring new agenda for environmental advocacy, one that will finally empower people, level the playing field, and provide real hope for communities everywhere.

19 SUSTAINABILITY IS PROFITABLE. PROFITABILITY IS SUSTAINABLE.

A FORMER FORTUNE 50 MANUFACTURING EXECUTIVE, RICK FEDRIZZI played an instrumental role in creating the most important and far-reaching sustain- ability movement of our time: the green building movement. Today, Fedrizzi’s work and ideas are transforming the real estate industry, one of the largest sectors of the global economy, and one of the largest contributors to climate change. As a cofounder of the U.S. Green Building Council, Fedrizzi oversaw the creation of LEED—Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design—which has certified four billion square feet of sustainable real estate worldwide. According to Paul Hawken, a legendary environmentalist, “USGBC may have had a greater impact than any other single organization in the world on materials saved, toxins eliminated, greenhouse gases avoided, and human health enhanced.” The green building industry has also sparked billions of dollars of economic impact and created millions of jobs. In Greenthink, Fedrizzi turns conventional wisdom on its head by showing how profit can save the planet, and how sustainability is the biggest business opportunity of the twenty-first century.Greenthink is a must-read for anyone who cares about the future of our environment, or the future of our economy. Because, in Fedrizzi’s words, “they will share the same fate.”

“Greenthink is a gift to all of us and offers a solid platform for moving forward with pos- itive, sustainable results. The idea that environmentalists and business should—and must—work together to assure optimum solutions is key to future success for all parties. A ‘win-win,’ Rick points out clearly, as we all share common enemies: waste, inefficiency, pollution, climate change, resource scarcity, and environmental degradation. To address these issues, embrace Greenthink.” —ART GENSLER, FOUNDER, GENSLER “ One of the most significant arguments for sustainability I have ever come across. Rick’s approach to this topic is different from any work to date, demonstrating the power of profitability and the simple case for why adopting ‘green’ principles is no longer just a , but a necessary edge to survive competitively in business.” —PAUL SCIALLA, FOUNDER AND CHAIRMAN, DELOS LIVING “ With Greenthink, Rick Fedrizzi brings much needed clarity, coherence, and urgency to this generation’s singular opportunity to align behind a common set of shared values that underscores the universality of human health and environmental quality, with transparency and reporting driving massive innovation as cornerstones of a prosperous future for all.” —GAIL VITTORI, CODIRECTOR, CENTER FOR MAXIMUM POTENTIAL BUILDING SYSTEMS

disruptionbooks.com Greenthink How profit can save the planet Rick Fedrizzi

SUMMARY

Sustainability is profitable. Profitability is sustainable.

For decades, environmentalists and the private sector have been at odds. Activists have decried the impact of industry on the environment. Business leaders, meanwhile, resent environmentalists for “job-killing regulations.” But Fedrizzi turns conventional wisdom on its head by showing how profit can save the planet, and how sustainability is the biggest business opportunity of the twenty-first century.

With the urgency of Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, the illuminating stories of Tom Friedman’s The Lexus and The Olive Tree, and the insight of Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point, Fedrizzi calls the reader’s attention to hidden yet fundamental truths about our environment, our society, and our economy. His message is as controversial as it is clear: leverage the profit motive to save the world—and its humans—from environmental catastrophe.

AUTHOR BIO

Since co-founding the U.S. Green Building Council in 1993, and serving as its CEO since 2004, Rick Fedrizzi helped create the global movement for sustainable buildings and communities. He oversaw the creation of LEED—Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design—the premier green building program. Rick is also the CEO of Green Business Certification Inc., and the chair of the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark. Additionally, Rick serves on numerous boards and advisory committees for diverse organizations, including Harvard University’s School of Public Health, the Clinton Global Initiative, Bank of America, and the World Green Building Council, which he chaired from 2011 to 2013.
