ABSTRACT A captive nearly mature least pigmy owl Glaucidium minutissimum rarum Griscom from Limon Province was found to eat a very wide variety of animals and animal parts. When capturing prey or taking food she always closed her eyes shortly before contacting the food, apparently to avoid eye damage; she had the ability to regurgitate pellets of indigestible material in the order in which it was consumed. With the exception of sea turtle meat, meat from vertebrates was accepted readily; she ate worms, crustaceans and a leech but rejected whole or fragmented scorpions. Cryptic orthopterans and other cryptic insects were readily eaten, and many aposematic Lepidoptera and Hemiptera were rejected. However, aposematic romaleinid grasshoppers were consumed, and cryptic walking sticks and some moths were rejected. On 27 July 1974 we purchased a nearly mature starving least pigmy owl (Glaucidium minutissimum rarum Griscom) in the main market of Limon, Limon Province, Costa Rica. The bird was named Wol, which is owl spelt wrongly. Our intent was to document her feeding behavior and preferences with respect to aposematic coloration, distastefulness, mimicry and specificity. Unfortunately she died accidentally in October of the same year. Here we offer our brief observations of her foods and feeding behavior since the feeding behavior of this species is unknown in the wild and we have no hope of completing the study. -

Com o objetivo de contribuir para o conhecimento da fauna de Arctiinae (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) ocorrentes no Estado de Santa Catarina, elaborou-se uma lista das espécies depositadas no Museu Entomológico Ceslau Biezanko. Os dados são referentes a coletas realizadas na região entre os anos 1943 e 1976 por Ceslau Maria Biezanko, Vitor Becker e Fritz Plauman. Foram encontradas 101 espécies, distribuídas em 57 gêneros e 238 indivíduos de Arctiini. Um total de 15 espécies é novo registro para o estado. Aiming to contribute to the knowledge of the Arctiinae (Lepidoptera: Family: Erebidae) fauna occurring in the Santa Catarina State, drew up a list of species deposited in the Entomological Museum Ceslau Biezanko. The data relating to collections made in the region between 1943 and 1976 by Maria Ceslau Biezanko, Vitor Becker and Fritz Plauman. We found 101 species in 57 genera and 238 individuals of Arctiini. A total of 15 species are new record for the state. -

[email protected] ABSTRACT. Composition of the Arctiidae species (Lepidoptera) in southern Brazil: relationship among vegetation types and among habitat spatial configuration. We describe the beta-diversity pattern of the Arctiidae in Rio Grande do Sul State (RS) and assess whether this pattern is related to similarities in vegetation type or geographic distance among areas. We analysed 9420 specimens in 13 scientific collections, as well as two published checklists. Three hundred twenty nine arctiid species were recorded for 55 localities. This richness corresponded to 5.6% of the Neotropical fauna, and 16.5% of the estimated Brazilian fauna. Fifty two species (15.8%) were recorded for the first time in the state. There was no relationship between beta-diversity (Sorensen distance) and geographic distance among the localities, suggesting that the spatial configuration of the habitat did not influence significantly the locomotion of the Arctiidae moths among landscapes. The multivariate analysis suggested that the Arctiidae fauna differ among vegetation types. The composition of the fauna at the Floresta Ombrófila Mista (Araucaria forest) is very distinct from other vegetation type faunas. -

This is a handsome paperback treating the tortricid fauna of Vietnam, and it represents the culmination of decades of work by V. I. Kuznetsov, J. Razowski, and now S. Nedoshivina. The book treats 363 species, each with its own species account and distribution map, the latter of which are neatly packed together near the end of the book. Nearly all species are illustrated in color, most for the first time. Black-and-white images of the male and female genitalia of select species also are provided. Early chapters provide a review of wing pattern nomenclature, morphological termin- ology of structures of the genitalia, and features of the larvae and pupae. Next, there is a checklist of the species recorded from Vietnam. Th e neotype designated by Travassos (1959) for this species is invalidated, and its original concept is reestablished based on the original description and illustrations. Th e original concept of Eucereon punctatum (Guérin- Méneville, [1844]) is also found to be diff erent than that established in the literature. Th is discovery is based on a type specimen found at the Natural History Museum, London. Eucereon punctatum is the valid name of Th eages quadricolor Walker, 1855, n. syn., E. quadricolor boreale Rothschild, 1912 n. syn., KEY WORDS and E. quadricolor meridionale Rothschild, 1912 n. syn. Comments on each name and its current taxonomic status, illustrations of holotypes and lecto- types, as well as information about their conservation status are provided. Lectotypes are designated for 23 of the taxa, and two new synonyms are proposed Eucyane variabilis flavofasciata and E. variabilis roseofasciata (=Hypocrita vari- abilis variabilis). Visually and according to the original description it closely resembles Agylla septentrionalis Barnes & McDunnough, 1911, Hyaleucerea mundula (Berg, 1882), Eucereon vestalis (Schaus, 1892a) (Figs 11‒13), and Agaraea sericeum (Zerny, 1931). -

Here we provide a list of Euchromiina species from the Brazilian Amazon. The list was produced from specimens deposited in the most important Brazilian collections and from literature data. Nearly 30% (219) of the neotropics Euchromiina species were recorded, including 13 new occurrences for the Brazilian Amazon. Santarém and Belém were the municipalities with the highest number of species records, with 96 and 74, respectively. Although the number of Euchromiina records is high in the Amazon, this value is underestimated because the fauna was never sampled in the vast majority of the biome. This is a worrying scenario because the Amazon has the world highest absolute rate of forest reduction. In order to suggest efficient conservation policies for the Amazon Arctiinae fauna, it is urgent to intensify the sampling effort in this biome. -
