  • Annual Report 2019-2020 Welcome
Annual Report 2019-2020 Welcome It is with great pleasure that we present this comprehensive report of the activities at the Museum of Art & Photography (MAP) for the financial year 2019-20. We have seen a lot of new ideas come to fruition this past year and are excited to share these with you. We are grateful to all those who have stood with us from the beginning, and all those who have joined us this year, for their overwhelming support towards MAP. The year 2020 brought unprecedented circumstances, with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a phase in history that will surely reshape our thinking about museums and the role of arts and culture in society. In March, MAP adopted a work from home policy for all its staff, in line with the guidelines issued by the government of Karnataka. Since then, the team has re-focussed its activities towards enhancing digital engagement with the public, while continuing the functions of collection cataloguing and preparation for the opening. A warm thanks to all our Trustees, Boards of Directors (both in India and the US) and our international Advisory Panel who have been a great source of wisdom and guidance as the team continues to grow. We look forward to continuing this journey of building a dynamic cultural space for the city of Bangalore and the country at large. Taking a look back at the past year, there have been many significant milestones that MAP has achieved across its many departments. We have reached more than 1,900 children and 100 educators from over 40 institutions through our education workshops.

  • An Exhibition of Photographs
An Exhibition of Photographs By Sunil Janah 3rd Dec.1996 - 20th Dec.1996 Matighar, IGNCA Recognition of Photography as an art form as also the use of the photographic medium in the multi-dimensional activities of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) has led it to develop a serious interest in the growth of photography in India. Since 1992, many important collections of photographs, including the works of Raja Deen Dayal, Cartier Bresson and Martha Strawn have been acquired and were exhibited in series of Exhibition entitles "Through a Photographer's Eye". Alongside this, the IGNCA has also been presenting exhibitions of sensitive photographers of national and international status such as Ashvin Mehta from India. Sebastiana Papa from Italy, francisco D'orazi Flavoni from Italy and David Ulrich from USA. Following upon its earlier exhibitions, IGNCA presents a selection of photographs of Sunil Janah (1943-63), from its archives. Sunil Janah was inspired and drawn to tribal India from a very early age. In his own words, "while broadly speaking, my subject was the Indian people, my emphasis had been on the distressing conditions of their lives, their poverty and wretchedness and their repeatedly manifest revolt against it. That out of my assignments of famines, epidemics and slum conditions, I could collect so many pictures of smiling, handsome women is not however entirely strange. I have photographed her because she represents the youth, charm and vitality which are not yet quiet destroyed in such a people, and which appear as irrepressibly as the hunger I had gone to portray.

The Promise of the Modern: State, Culture, and Avant-gardism in India (ca. 1930-1960) A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY ATREYEE GUPTA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Frederick M. Asher December, 2011 © Atreyee Gupta, 2011 Acknowledgements The debts accrued over the course of this dissertation are too many and too deep to summarize. While the Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship from the University of Minnesota and the Predoctoral Fellowship from the Getty Research Institute have supported my dissertation writing, it was the funding from the International Dissertation Research Fellowship, Social Science Research Council and the Thesis Research Grant, University of Minnesota that made the research for the project possible. My academic home, the Department of Art History at the University of Minnesota, extended financial assistance not only to undertake short research trips, but also to present sections of my dissertation at several national conferences. Indeed, this dissertation may have taken a few more years to write without the encouragement of Jane Blocker and the Department of Art History’s dissertation writing group. I feel lucky to have been a part of this academic community, a community that taught, encouraged, and challenged me to think deeper and harder. Much of the research for this dissertation was conducted at the National Archives of India, the Lalit Kala Archives, the Archaeological Survey of India Records Room, the Delhi State Archives, and the Parasher Archives, New Delhi; the archives of the Government Museum and Art Gallery, the archives of the Government College of Art, and the Punjab State Archive, Chandigarh; the India Office Records, British Library, London; the Mukul Dey Archives, Santiniketan; and the Special Collections of the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles.
