Brief Resume of the Intended Work 6.1 Need for the study: The word ‘physique’ has the meaning as the shape and size of the body. In Ayurvedic classics, the word shareera has similar meaning that it is the shape of the human body from foot to head. The proper size and shape of body is a topic of discussion since ancient times. Nowadays this topic has broader meaning along with terms like height, weight, body mass index etc. BMI is a simple index of weight for height that is commonly used to classify under weight, over-weight and obesity in adults, irrespective of sex and health status. It is defined as the weight in Kilograms divided by the square of the height in metres (Kg/M2)5. BMI is a quantitative datum and no qualitative features are attributed to it. Ayurveda, the science of life has given importance to maintain the body in a healthy condition. In Charaka Samhitha Sutra Sthana, it is said that, one should protect his own body like officer in charge of the city who protects the city2. For that, the knowledge of shareera is very important. In Susrutha Samhitha Sutra Sthana 15th chapter, “Dosha dathu mala kshaya vridhi vijnana”, shareera is divided into three categories like krisha, madhya and sthoola1. These three divisions are assessed based on physical characters only and nothing is available regarding quantitative analysis. Hence in this study, an attempt will be made to compare the qualitative analysis of ayurvedic description and quantitative data of modern science. In the present study, the shareera of ayurvedic explanation is compared with modern parameter and analysed. Out of these thrividha shareera, more importance is given to concept of madhya shareera as it is considered as features of healthy person.
