Sacred Heart Academy 2nd Grade Homework Assignments For Week of: Wednesday, March 2 – March 8, 2016 Due: Wednesday, March 9, 2016

*********************************************************************** RELIGION Enclosed in your child’s classroom envelope is: 1. Sadlier, Chapter 10, We Follow God’s Laws. With your student, please review this chapter with special emphasis on the “Take Home” page 129. 2. Sadlier, Chapter 20, LENT. With your child, please review this chapter. Please note: Your student has been encouraged to do the activities on pages 234 and 236. 3. LENTEN HEARTS: As a means to keeping our Lenten Intentions fresh and active during the school day, students are invited to select a Lenten Heart (choices are: Prayer, Giving Alms or Good Deeds/Service) write the action they took and paste the heart on our classroom cross. Please note: Fasting is not included because our Church doesn’t require growing children to fast. Fasting begins at age 14. a. Attached is a sheet of Lenten Hearts for use at home. Your family is invited to join us in keeping our Lenten practices of Loving God and Loving Others with our extra prayers and giving of ourselves in service to others. If you would like additional sheets of hearts, please let us know!

LANGUAGE ARTS We begin Superkids, Unit 6, Lessons 1-5. Word Work:  Phonics: al,au,augh,ough  Author’s Craft: Alliteration  Grammar: past tense verbs  Comprehension: recognize main idea in a paragraph Decodable Reader: Second Semester - pages 52-61 Super Magazine: “The Inside Story” Unit 6, Lessons 1-5 Cursive Handwriting: Writing lower case cursive letters, writing numbers and number words, Cursive upper case C,A,) Homework o Backpack pages 83, 84, 85, 86 – these pages provide practice for concepts taught in class each week. Each Backpack page has Family instructions at the top. The pages are designed to be interactive with your child. o Please note: The Spelling test will be Tues., 03/8 - re-take test on Wed., 03/9. o No Reading Log this week – dedicate reading time to researching an Amazing Animal! (please see Science homework!) MATH This week we are sharpening our addition and subtraction skills in preparation for the End of Module 5 Test that we will take tomorrow. On Monday, 3/7, we will begin Module 6, Addition and Subtraction Within 1,000 with Word Problems to 100.

SCIENCE Second Trimester Report: Amazing Animals. Please refer to the attached timeline for all the details! Homework: 1. Please assist your child in selecting an Amazing Animal to research. The My Amazing Animal Fact sheet is due Wednesday, 3/9. It is important that the sheet is turned in by 3/9 because we will begin writing the reports in class on Thursday, 3/10. Thank you! Please note that due to my unplanned absence these past 2 weeks, our Animal Reports and 2nd Trimester Awards will need to be moved from Friday, 3/11 to Friday, March 18th. 1. Wednesday, 3/9, School Mass, 8:45am hosted by our 1st grade friends. Please help your child remember to bring a canned or boxed food item for the offertory. As always, you and yours are welcome to join us!

2. Wednesday, 3/16, SHA Lenten Penance Service, 8:45am, hosted by 2nd grade! Reading parts will be assigned this Friday with priority given to students who haven’t had an opportunity this year to read at Mass.

3. Monday, 3/7 through Friday, 3/11, 2nd grade will lead Morning Assembly! Assembly parts were assigned today with priority given to those who have not read at Morning Assembly this year.

4. Monday, 3/7 we celebrate the beginning of the 3rd Trimester! I’m happy for our 2nd graders but sad because I love being their teacher! We will be exploring States of Matter by turning a solid, a liquid and a gas in to what else? Ice cream! Mrs. Thatcher will be sending out an email with a list of needed supplies. Please be sure to send a pair of warm gloves with your child on Monday – they will need them for our experiment!
