Maine Adult Education Association Ballot At-Large Members 2016-2017/8 (Top three elected will serve two-year terms and fourth elected will serve one-year term.) Please vote for FOUR (4) candidates - One vote per MAEA member

Bernadette Farrar, Assistant Director, Houlton Bernadette Farrar is currently serving as Assistant Director of the RSU 29/70 Adult Education program located in Houlton, Maine. Bernadette has worked in the field of adult education since 1997 when she began her career teaching in the classroom of the Aroostook County Jail. Since then, she has been involved in teaching ABE, GED, now HiSET preparation, college-prep reading and writing, and college transitions. Bernadette is a graduate of the University of Maine Presque Isle with a degree in history and a minor in political science. She is a 2013 graduate of the Maine Leadership Academy and just completed the Peak Careers Career Development Facilitator course in April of 2016. She will also graduate this summer with a Master’s Degree in Adult and Higher Education. Bernadette has previously served two terms on the MAEA board and is currently serving on the corrections subcommittee. She wants to return to the board to serve as a voice for the reality of running local programs and the learners they serve.

Susan Knight, Education Coordinator, Somerset County Jail Susan Knight works with MSAD 54 Adult and Community Education and serves as the Education Coordinator at Somerset County Jail. She began working in this capacity in 2008. Prior to that, she has worked with Franklin County ABE, teaching in multiple capacities including ESL, corrections, and family literacy. Since 2015, when the Franklin County Detention Center reopened as a full-service jail, she has been the Education Coordinator there. Susan has been involved on the Corrections Committee for MAEA over the past few years and this committee has grown stronger. In 2014, she completed her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership through UMF. She focused her research on the inclusion of those sentenced to a Community Correction program. Susan is a highly motivated learner and a passionate advocate for adult learners.

Vivian Champagne, Administrative Assistant, RSU 54

Vivian works as the Administrative Assistant for RSU 54 Adult and Community Education in Skowhegan. She started working in this capacity in October of 2010. Prior to that, she worked in the high school office. Vivian enjoys working in Adult Education and would like to offer more professional development opportunities for administrative assistants in the field. She is presenting a workshop at this year’s conference.

Louise Burns, High School Completion Coord., Noble AE Louise Burns is interested in a one year position on the Maine Adult Education Association (MAEA) board. Her experience with adult education exceeds 20 years with Noble Adult and Community Education in North Berwick, Maine. Louise obtained her BA in Mathematics and teaching certificate for the state of Maine from Bowdoin College in 1983. She completed her Masters in Educational Administration in 1991. Outside of her work as the High School Completion Coordinator and Math teacher for her program, Louise has participated in numerous professional development opportunities including Equipped for the Future (EFF), Assessment with Donna Curry, MARTI, Carl Perkins Math Curriculum and two years working at the state level on a math curriculum. She currently serves as secretary for the Southern Maine Teachers Alliance and considers herself a strong advocate for adult education in Maine. Suzanne Nowinski, Director, Newport and Pittsfield

Suzanne Nowinski has been involved with Maine Adult Education for over 27 years, starting as a part-time secretary in the early years and advancing on to director for the last 15 years in Newport. She has witnessed many changes in the adult education field and believes now is the time to commit to being more involved in those changes. Suzanne believes that adult educators are their students’ voices for a better future. She believes that adult educators need to promote and support student needs. Shelli Pride, CT Coordinator, Windham/Raymond

Shelli is the College Transitions Coordinator for Windham Raymond Adult Education. She began her career in adult education approximately 20 years ago teaching various vocational courses. She continues to facilitate various courses, workshops, including WorkReady . She earned her BS in Applied Technology Education in 2005 and her MS in Adult Education in 2014; both from the University of Southern Maine. She was the recipient of the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award in 2015. She currently serves as the chairperson for the Southern Maine Adult Education's Educator's Alliance.
