Principal Howard Responds: We’re going back to grass roots approach, in that we are using every resource possible to get to students to graduate. We are currently doing a great deal; putting out flyers, making announcements and alike to get parents to participate, but we are open to suggestions. Parent Questions: How do the students get the tutoring they need at SSA? What is the criteria? Mrs. Igberaese Responds: Saturday Success Academy (SSA) is formed on a rotation, students receive and hour of reading, math and science respectively, for the 11th and 12th grade students, AP, ACT and SAT prep is a so available. If the student has already taken an algebra class, for example, and subsequently did not passed the algebra EOC, but now he or she is in a Geometry class, the student can go to algebra tutoring to help them pass the algebra EOC. Mrs. Igberaese also informed parents about the afterschool programs available and the fact that students receive free transportation and breakfast and lunch at SSA and dinner during the afterschool tutoring. Parent Question: There’s a concern to help those parents who are not proficient in the English language; can we volunteer for a parent workshop, perhaps call parents to recruit and involve them? Mrs. Igberaese respond: Yes, we have teachers that speak the respective languages and they do call parents to inform them about the goings on at Hallandale, but we will certainly consider a parent night soon exposing parents to pinnacle as well.
