JOHN AME 13 CHURCH IN MARION FOR HOSTING THE 117TH SESSION 14 OF THE NORTHEAST ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE 15 SEVENTH EPISCOPAL DISTRICT OF THE AFRICAN 16 METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH. 17 18 Whereas, the mission of the African Methodist Episcopal Church 19 (AME Church) is to minister to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, 20 emotional, and environmental needs of all people by spreading 21 Christ’s liberating gospel through word and deed; and 22 23 Whereas, the AME Church is dedicated to seek out and save the 24 lost, and serve the needy through a continuing program of 25 preaching the gospel, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, 26 housing the homeless, cheering the fallen, providing jobs for the 27 jobless, and encouraging thrift and economic advancement. 28 Further, the church is committed to administering to the needs of 29 those in prisons, hospitals, nursing homes, asylums, mental 30 institutions, and senior citizens’ homes, as well as caring for the 31 sick, the shut-in, and the mentally and socially disturbed; and 32 33 Whereas, the AME Church has a unique and glorious history. It 34 was the first major religious denomination in the Western World 35 that had its origin in sociological and theological beliefs and 36 differences. The AME Church grew out of the Free African 37 Society, which Richard Allen, Absalom Jones, and others 38 established in Philadelphia in 1787; and 39 40 Whereas, the church’s roots are the family of the Methodist 41 churches. Methodism provides an orderly system of rules and 42 regulations and places emphasis on a plain and simple gospel.

1 [1422] 1 1 Episcopal refers to the form of government under which the church 2 operates; and 3 4 Whereas, led by Reverend Donnie McBride, St. John AME Church 5 of Marion will host the 117th Session of the Northeast Annual 6 Conference of the Seventh Episcopal District of the African 7 Methodist Episcopal Church August 25 through 29, 2008. The 8 District consists of three Districts: Marion District, Sumter 9 District, and Florence/Dillon District; and 10 11 Whereas, each year the Annual Conference is held at a different 12 church to: transact the business of the conference; gather together 13 all of the Ministry Groups for fellowship; appoint, reappoint, and 14 ordain ministers; and make plans for the upcoming year; and 15 16 Whereas, this year the Right Reverend Preston Warren Williams, 17 II, Presiding Bishop, will be presiding over the conference. Now, 18 therefore, 19 20 Be it resolved by the Senate: 21 22 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, 23 honor and thank Reverend Donnie McBride and the parishioners 24 of St. John AME Church in Marion for hosting the 117th Session of 25 the Northeast Annual Conference of the Seventh Episcopal District 26 of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. 27 28 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 29 Reverend Donnie McBride and the parishioners of St. John AME 30 Church. 31 ----XX---- 32
