Dissertation: Political Media Relations and the Power of Party-Based Regimes Committee Members: Doris Graber, Andrew McFarland, Andrew Rojecki, Ali Riaz, and Carlos Parodi
This dissertation analyzes political leaders’ ability to communicate their messages as related to numerous public policy issues and debates. More specifically, I examine the efforts of the President and members of his party in Congress to communicate his political party’s policy agenda to the American public via the mass media. I examine how media coverage changes in tone and in framing major public policy debates, depending on which party is in control of government. Led by the president, partisan governments are found to play a major role in influencing media coverage in terms of furthering Democratic and Republican political messages. Partisan governments’ political messages, reflected in mass media coverage, then play a major role in influencing public policy attitudes, although inconsistently, with such effects highly dependent on the partisanship and ideology of media consumers. I demonstrate these relationships through content analysis, examination of political and media attentiveness in national public opinion surveys, and through experimental methods.
