The theme is Cinco de Mayo. What is Cinco de Mayo? Of course, it means “the fifth of May.” This holiday honors the Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Let’s get some background information first. France wanted to collect on war debts so it sent a massive army to fight its way to Mexico City to achieve this goal. The French army was large, well-trained, well-equipped and able to destroy anything – or anyone – in its path. Outside the town of Puebla, something unlikely happened: Mexican soldiers, most of them untrained and with poor equipment, defeated the French. This victory provided a morale boost to the Mexican army and helped to slow the French army’s advance towards Mexico City. President Benito Juárez declared the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla a national holiday; however, Cinco de Mayo is not a federal holiday in Mexico. Did you know . . . . Cinco de Mayo is more popular in the United States than it is in Mexico? . The world’s largest Cinco de Mayo celebration takes place in Los Angeles? . Up to 81 million pounds of avocados are consumed in the U.S. every Cinco de Mayo? . Corn, tomatoes, beans, and avocados are some staples of Mexican cuisine?
