Pledge of Allegiance The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Student Council students from Midway High School.

Recognitions All-State and Academic All-State Athletes The Board recognized the following All-State and Academic All-State athletes:

Girls’ soccer: Georgia Fair, Miriam McCormick, Lexi Mendez, Ashley Posey. Head coach is Bill Sharp.

Girls’ softball: Rhein Trochim and Haley Moore. Head coach is Ed Trochim.

Girls’ basketball: Barb Benson, Regganae Allen, Ashlynn Gorrell, Jailene Gutierrez, Shaurmeyun Isaac, Aliyah Parks, and Madison Wagner. Head coach is Ben Holder.

Boys’ soccer: Ernesto Serrato, Gage Smith, Matthew Mack, Richard Maldonado, Samuel White, Tanner Daniels, and Thomas Meehan. Head Coach is Patrick Posey.

Boys’ golf: Corey Karnei, Nathaniel Morgan, and Daniel Siebert. Head coach is David May.

State Water Polo Club Team The Board also recognized the State Water Polo Club Team. Congratulations to Ethan Alford, Braden Bain, Wes Baker, Mark Ferguson, Mark Gibel, Minsoo Kang, Chris Kazanas, Nick King, Brady Langdale, Calvin Morgan, Minh Nguyen, Jonathan Norris, Ben Rafalski, Nick Robinson, Cooper Shafer, Blake Singleterry, Toby Smyers, J T Word, and Emily Vela. Club sponsor is Dan Marlin.

Information Items Update 108 affecting local policies: EF(LOCAL) Instructional Resources; EFA(LOCAL) Instructional Resources – Instructional Materials; EFAA(LOCAL) Instructional Materials – Selection and Adoption; EHDB(LOCAL) Alternative Methods for Earning Credit – Credit by Examination with Prior Instruction; EIF(LOCAL) Academic Achievement – Graduation; EL(LOCAL) Campus Charters; and GKB(LOCAL) Community Relations – Advertising and Fundraising. Update 108 contains recommended changes to local policies on topics including: instructional resources and materials, credit by examination with prior instruction, graduation, campus charters, and community relations in regard to advertising and fundraising. Update 108 is presented for first reading and will be adopted at the July board meeting.

Presentation Items Technology Update Seth Hansen, Executive Director of Technology, and Susan Fletcher, Director of Instructional Technology, updated the Board on a variety of projects pertaining to Midway’s technology. The update included data, privacy, safety and security; BrightBytes technology survey data; digital learning environments; hardware updates; and revised student responsible use agreements.

Finance Report Wesley Brooks presented the monthly finance report. Total District enrollment at the end of the school year was 7,872, an increase of 157 students from the last day of the previous school year. The preliminary average daily attendance for the 6th six weeks is 7,550.8; the average ADA for the entire year is 7,534.5. The overall attendance percentage for the year is 97.1%.

Current budget projections show that Midway will end the 2016-2017 fiscal year with a deficit of $304,843. This number will continue to be updated before the fiscal year ends at the end of August.

Extracurricular Program Updates Both athletics and fine arts programs continue to thrive, with programs and students receiving numerous awards and accomplishments.

Athletics Program Update Mr. Brad Shelton, Athletic Director, presented an athletics program update to the Board of Trustees for 2016-2017. This update included goals for Athletics for 2017-2018.

Fine Arts Program Update Mr. Darrell Umhoefer, Coordinator of Fine Arts, presented an update of the fine arts program to the Board for 2016-2017. This update included goals for Fine Arts for 2017-2018.

Progress of Strategic Planning Dr. Kazanas updated the Board on the progress of Midway’s strategic planning. The first round of data collection from the recent survey was included in the Board packet. A more comprehensive review of the data will be conducted with consultant Laurie Cromwell at a later date.

Items 1 and 3-5 above were approved by the Board.

Dale Fisseler, City Manager for the City of Waco, addressed the Board concerning the Highway 84 Landfill. Mr. Fisseler stated the City Council met on Tuesday, June 20th, to hear recommendations on alternative sites for the landfill. The City will hold additional meetings in July and August. No vote is expected by the City on this item before September or October. Dr. Brad Holland, representative of the Citizens Against the Highway 84 Landfill, also addressed the Board concerning the landfill. Dr. Holland stated that no new sites had been presented by the City at the June 20th meeting and he urged the Board to approve a resolution against the expansion of the current landfill.

After discussion, the Board took no action on Item 2 above. It will be placed on the agenda for the Board to consider again at the July meeting.

Superintendent’s Communications: Dr. Kazanas updated the Board on the Special Session called by the Governor. This session will begin on July 18th and can last up to 30 days. No detailed agenda has come forth on items that will be discussed during this session.
